As of February 2022, lifetime unit sales of Xbox One consoles in North America reached 32.45 million while in Europe, lifetime unit sales surpassed 12.45 million. In total, 50.55 million Xbox One unit have been sold worldwide as of February 2022.

Don mattrick literally destroyed the Xbox one.

compared to the x360, which had sold 85.8 million units across the world, including over 49 million units in North America.

Currently, the XSX/XSS is sitting at 10.7m to12m sales.

Don Matrick literally left six months before the console even came out lol. Let's not blame everything on him.
He was fired or mutually got kicked out of the company, after that E3 disaster.
That was what led to this disaster, not to mention the lack of 1st party studios, which he should have heavily focused on. This left a huge gap for xbox, which got them the lable of no games console.

The Xbox One recovery under Phil was one of gamings greatest comebacks of all time. I even doubt that the actual active user base for the 360 is anything like the units sold after RROD and enough circumstantial user testimony of how many brought replacement consoles. So, like for like it seems there's a core Xbox audience that did stick with them, even if it was their 2nd console.

Good work.

Yep, it was a massive set back from the 360 successes.
But having said that, the Xbox One X was the best console. As far as the hardware goes it destroyed the PS4 pro in every way. It played UHD bluray discs, PS4 Pro didn't. It was whisper quiet, the PS4 Pro sounded like a jet engine. It was way more powerful than the PS4 Pro, was built better.
It was just had a pesky little thing called games that held it back.
To think what could have been if they did they didn't do all that stupid shit.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

He was the president of the Entertainment business unit which overlooked the Xbox division, the decisions which directly led XBO to have the terrible launch (forced kinect, higher price, primary focus on tv shit) all went through him.

Doesn't matter if he left before the console came out in this case. He left his stank through that generation.

After that Xbox documentary I understand the decisions he made. He doubled down on what successes he had before not recognizing that the install base he had to play with was there to begin with just because of great games. I don't agree with those decisions but I now recognize where he was coming from so I no longer hate on the guy who stayed in his wheelhouse.

If the xbox one hadnt happened, the result would have been different. Same for the ps3, and wii u.

Each company decided to make 1 console, which almost destroyed their business.
I think it's unfair to blame one generation too much.

Wii U failed, but didn't Nintendo Switch succeed? They just broke the record of fastest 100 million units with Nintendo Switch.
PS3 failed, but didn't PS4 succeed? They are almost at 120 million units sold. Now PS5 is pacing to likely beating that record as well.

The camera thing was foolish at the start.
But I have to say, I don't think can even remotely say a device that sells 50 million units is a failure even if the competition was more than double.
It also doesn't include pc users, not sure what that numbers is exactly.

Both of those system had success. Its just that, they decided 180* after having huge success before. From ps2 to ps3. From wii to wii u. From x360 to xbox one. Then they did 180* after the disaster launches of these consoles. From ps3 to ps4, huge success. From wii u to Switch, huge success. And now Xbox one to Xsx/Xss, which is seeing support and games, which the last console didnt get.

From the absolute high of 360 to an absolute low of Xbox one , only Microsoft can do that in 1 generation. Microsoft is still recovering from that e3 instead of Kinect and tv bullshit Microsoft should've focused on games.

I mean it's really whoever was in charge of investing in first party games as they take years to make and that probably did way more damage than the launch long term. Whether it was him or the CEO of Microsoft not wanted to spend money at the time, we'll never actually know.

Sony and Nintendo had a history of competition and knew they needed exclusives

Actually every single console maker has done it.

Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft....Sega.

It's why its pretty safe to say that entering the console business is dangerous. Will be interesting to see if Apple flops

Apple can't flop with unlimited money tbh
Also companies make shit products that's ok the xbox one Kinect blunder would've been saved if they actually went ahead and bought some studios and made some good games instead they went all in with tv and media which was just terrible and a checkmate
Is selling 50 million units bad? Fuck no
But they could've sold a 100 million if not for those brain dead decisions

Why not? He forced Kinect into the box and overcharged for a noticeably weaker console by $100. He created an idiotic plan to limit trade and resell of used physical copies of games which the industry entirely rejected. All these negatives followed Xbox One into the next gen and stained the Xbox brand. Who else are you going to blame for the shitshow that was Xbox One?

Xbox Series X/S is at over 12M in 13 1/2 months and should hit 50M in half the time it took Xbox One to hit 50M. Massive improvements compared to 2013 and excluding the horrible decision to try and raise the price of Gold, no major fuck ups thus far.

Major fuck up you say?

They just picked up Bethesda and will likely have Activision.

Most diverse, best line up of games delivered via gamepass in affordable way.

Time to get out of the past. They have best system this gen. Just the brand needs to recover so casuals would pick it up like PS5.

Why would you consider PS3 a failure? It sold as much or more than X360. It brought in Blu Ray which is the standard in the consoles now and was the console where many system sellers were created like Uncharted, Demon's Souls, Infamous, TLoU etc. which paved way for great follow ups on PS4.

Ask me about my fanboy energy!
The Don Matrick blaming is funny. Gaming was not an independent division of Microsoft but rather a sub division under "Windows and Devices Group" led by Terry Myerson. Most of their decisions were dictated by him.
He's in charge of Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox. Can he make it all work?

By Adrianne Jeffries - Jul 12, 2013, 10:30am EDT
It was not until late 2017, when Gaming was spun off into its own division and they could start planning big.
I mean it's really whoever was in charge of investing in first party games as they take years to make and that probably did way more damage than the launch long term. Whether it was him or the CEO of Microsoft not wanted to spend money at the time, we'll never actually know.

They actually lost many of their own second part devs to third parties.
Bizzare Creations - Bought by Activision and closed
Bioware - Bought by EA
Double Helix (made Killer Instinct)- Bought by Amazon
Nakayama even appealed to them to buy Sega, but Bill Gates blocked that deal. Only after 2017 did they start investing in more first party studios.

From 150m console to 87m sales, which gave x360 tons of publisher and devs to put their games on that console.

Not to mention the financial loss, which Sony still hasn't recovered from those ps3 sales.

It was a disaster launch for them. The revisions after that made, the console bearable. The Cell processor which almost killed their 3rd party deal for them. Not to mention xbox benefited from this massively.

You know what, that's actually better than I had thought. Colour me surprised.

Wii -> Wii U was actually a larger cratering than X360 -> Xbone in terms of numbers. The difference is that Nintendo's image was saved because most folks didn't actually realise the Wii U was a console, so Wii -> Switch looks pretty great to the average jo. On the flipside, my grandmother heard about how bad the "new Xbox" was, where people speculated it would spy on them in their own homes.

I don't think Microsoft are in recovery mode anymore. I would say they're in a holding pattern, waiting for their investments to start paying off. Halo Infinite might have a been yet another 343i misfire, but Forza Horizon and Psychonauts 2 landed strong. The Xbox Series consoles are, surprisingly, keeping a close pace to the PS5, limited more by manufacturing rates than demand. If Microsoft can actually deliver where it counts - high quality exclusives on a semi-regular basis - I'd say they'd have made up all the ground they lost.

It will but chip shortages are causing major supply chain problem. Ms has all the great games coming.

of course it is. everything has at least some financial interest. we don't live in a utopia. that doesn't mean that every dev or artist does it because of money, but it is definitely a factor.
Allow me to elaborate, the context wasnt why companies make games, it was the fact that all the money in the world wont produce a good game. Hence Amazon and Google flopping with their first party studios despite paying big money to poach developers.

Apple has a cult like following , if tomorrow they go all in on gaming which I highly doubt they will , they will be a feirce competitor for Microsoft and Sony. Their MacBooks and ipads are more powerful or almost on par with PS5 /series

Wasted gen for Xbox IMO. Smoked by the PS4.

I really enjoyed;

Ori 1&2
Halo 5 and MCC

And got some mileage out of Gears 4&5 (however these were a step down compared to 1-3). Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 were also good games.

It’s still underwhelming compared to the line up of the 360, PS3, PS4, Wii U and Switch.

I sold my Xbox One S 2tb but re-bought one 18 months before the Series consoles launched - without Game Pass things would have been bleak.

Things are looking so much better though since the Bethesda purchase (even though they already had those games).

The problem that they may face is the same issue that they face re gaming on Mac:

- It's a chicken and egg situation between the size of the audience and the ROI calculation for devs
- I am not 100% sure that game devs are very interested in dealing with the Apple app moderation team and their store policies.

If Apple/Gaming does lose the battle on the Open App Market Act, I could see them trying to court game devs a lot more with more favourable policies which could translate to a Apple 'console' or Apple TV

Not even a Mac mini costs that little!

Nintendo and PlayStation partnered with Apple.

Apple even have dualsense controllers on their stores… doesn’t make sense Apple going full on gaming! What makes sense is PlayStation and Nintendo putting their games on Apple ecosystem you know MS competitor!

Their iPads are nowhere near as powerful - GPU wise - as the PS4 Pro.

Only the largest chipsets they’ve ever made theoretically benchmarks close to the PS5…and it’s expensive as hell.

99% of their games will have to be made to work on an iPhone X, so you’d never get anything thatd take advantage of the specs.

It is a failure because, according to Sony themselves, PS4 would be the last gen for Sony if it flopped. PS3 was rescued, but in order to do so Sony had to use up all the profits PS2 had made. it was do or die time after that.

And the way i see it, it also set back their original goal to have backward compatibility in order to retain users. Sony was nearly invincible with PS2; had they kept the market share in PS3 then no one would be able to face them.
