A Playstation 5 ssd sale is going on at Amazon US!

Edit: This thread was made before Amazon Prime Day so many popular drive prices have changed such as the Samsung 980, WD 850 and others. The current new king amongst PC gamers is the SK HYNIX PLATINUM P41 priced at $119 for 1TB AND $207 for 2TB. I highly recommend them as they bought out Intel's NAND and SSD divisions and have become popular as of late:

SK hynix Platinum P41 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal SSD l Up to 7,000MB/S l Compact M.2 SSD Form Factor SK hynix SSD - Internal Solid State Drive with 176-Layer NAND Flash https://a.co/d/fAtmpZf

Limited-time deal: Nextorage Internal SSD 1TB for PS5 and PC Memory Expansion M.2 2280 Gen4 NVMe with Heatsink NEM-PA1TB/N SYM Maximum Transfer Rate Read: 7300MB/s, Write: 6000MB/s https://a.co/d/3ff28DZ

$127 for a Nextorage 1TB SSD. (edit: now $109 for Amazon Prime Day) Nextorage is owned by Sony and wasn't available outside of Japan until VERY recently. This is also one of the fastest drives out there roughly comparable to the Firecuda 530. Practically a first party drive!

People were paying $250 for 1TB. If you haven't been pricing this stuff then read on! Those who follow this stuff are flipping out!

Most of the 2tb drives are around $250 (edit: Prime Day has made things even cheaper. It's the Wild West today). You may think that is a high price but people were paying $400 up until recently. These are pretty much as low as they have ever been and many brand new SSD models have been released within the last few months going over 7,000 in read speed so they are extra fast. 7,000 read speed was the holy grail and now lots of very recent drives are going over the mark. This is exciting. You can finally get better than stock results with some of these drives - just carefully look for reviews. You don't really need to pay a premium for a Samsung or Firecuda if you want extra speed any longer. (edit: even these are cheaper thanks to Amazon and Best Buy! LMAO)

Two blistering fast newer model 2TB drives for $250:

XPG 2TB GAMMIX S70 Blade - Works with Playstation 5, PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal Gaming SSD Up to 7,400 MB/s (AGAMMIXS70B-2T-CS) https://a.co/d/cYfEdaF (edit: now $199 for Prime Day)

Patriot Viper VP4300 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 x 4 Internal Gaming Solid State Drive Compatible with PS5, Playstation 5 - VP4300-2TBM28H https://a.co/d/3SpjDmf (edit: $204 Prime Day price)

And if you want to go ultra cheap this is slightly under $100 after coupon:

NVMe 1TB M.2 Compatible with PS5 SSD Equipped with 1GB DDR4 Cache Solid State Drive Gen4 PCIe 4.0 Read 7300 MB/s Write 6000 MB/s M.2 2280 3D NAND TLC Acclamator https://a.co/d/eo1T7Ve

This is maybe the cheapest I've seen a Playstation 5 compatible 4tb SSD with a heatsink at $549 as you were looking at $700-$800 not long ago:

Silicon Power 4TB XS70 - Works with Playstation 5, Nvme PCIe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal Gaming SSD R/W Up to 7,200 MB/6,800/s (SP04KGBP44XS7005) https://a.co/d/6LcnvKa

Keep in mind that I'm linking you to SSD drives WITH THE HEAT SINK INCLUDED. There may be cheaper prices for drives without. If you opt to install your own custom heatsink I shall point you toward this BEHEMOTH:

ElecGear PS5 NVMe SSD Heatsink, EL-P5C Heat Pipe + Solid Aluminum Cooler for Playstation 5 Internal PCIe M.2 NVMe 4.0 Gen4 Gaming Memory, Thermal Pads and Re-Designed SSD Mounting Post Kit https://a.co/d/cCvnzLD

And this heatsink has a literal copper pipe hanging off the side:

ineo PS5 Heatsink, M.2 NVME SSD Heatsink for PS5 Internal PCIe M.2 NVMe Gaming SSD, Magnesium Aluminum Alloy Designed with Large Heat Dissipation [M22] https://a.co/d/1EQegl

Edit: Prices are now at ridiculous historic lows across the board thanks to Amazon Prime Day arriving so the prices are even better than when this was originally posted. BUY! BUY! BUY!

That is a particularly good review of the Nextorage SSD.

Nice. Got to love the competitive open market!

I have my eyes on this one. Reviews well, and a Sony owned company, I believe.

Who claimed proprietary would be cheaper? Proprietary usually comes with other benefits like hot swappablity and portability.

127 is tempting. I don't need it yet. The only permanent resident on the internal rn is gt7. Assuming an ever-growjng Tekken 8 and sf6 are going to be stuck on there, I'm going to need it, though. I guess I'll look at reviews.

The memory stick pro duo and Vita memory cards were really neither of those. Sony finally learned their lesson with the proprietary nonsense. Microsoft messed up with the Seagate deal. They should have just manufactured an enclosure and let you drop an m.2 2230 with a minimum spec into it. With no alternative there's no downward price pressure and, honestly, hardly anyone is hot swapping Xbox expansion cards. I got mine when 1tb gen4 SSD was the same price as one of the xbox expansion cards so I didn't feel bad but now the price is a kick in the teeth.

Oh….I distinctly remember having discussions with people saying Xbox expansion would drop in price with standard SSD. They were wrong.

The problem with those benefits is that you are paying for them whether you want them or not.

Here was one of those discussions:

In summary, as usual, he's full of shit.

As a bonus here was another discussion on the same topic:

History is never kind to these people.

I just had to find the post where MrFunSocks MrFunSocks claimed third party PS5 SSDs would actually go up in price whereas Microsoft's price would remain the same.

Just a word to all those people thinking that these HDD/SSD prices will drop quickly and sharply - have you looked at the price of *normal* HDDs lately? A 2x10TB external drive I bought back in march for AUD$450 is now over AUD$1000, directly from the manufacturer. HDD availability is also terrible. With high speed drives being used for mining, the chances of prices dropping any time soon are pretty slim.

MS won't raise the price of their proprietary expansion drive for the Xbox. Companies that make these high speed SSDs that the PS5 uses absolutely will, because they already are.

Almost as hilarious as his comparison of installing a SSD in PS5 to building a house.

If that benefit is worth the cost to you then cool. Not much use, however, for those of us who only own one Xbox.
also makes it easy to take it to my buddies pplace and have my games there, kinda like a old school memory card

its definitely a more convenient form factor, but yeah its pricier

Unfortunately we are getting close to the point where it will be double the price of standard m.2 SSDs. I was hoping Microsoft would open up sales of Xbox expansion to other vendors by now, but it seems Seagate will continue to own the market and dictate price.

Here is a classic:
The proprietary one will be less pricey you think? Did the 360 hdds teach you nothing?

You think a 5.5 GB/sec NVMe SSD drive will cost anything less than 300 USD?
Those XSX memory cards will definitely be cheaper. Unlike 360 HDDs these are being advertised as memory cards and will be priced accordingly.
Yet here we are with a faster one at $127. Funny that.

Anyway on topic. Is it maybe worth waiting for prime day?

I still love that I am able to take my Series expansion card with me, and move it among my 2 series consoles
Well, yeah, but if the price differential keeps up, you'd be able to just buy extra storage for both consoles for the same price. Look, I like the little memory card things. They're cute. They feel like a quality product. They are clearly a money grab though.

On the plus side, there are already adapters that can allow standard nvme's to work with the system. They seem very limited and unreliable right now, but if the prices don't go down on the Seagate ones, I'm sure the quality and compatibility of these adapters will rise.

I'll be getting one before Modern Warfare 2 comes out, I haven't decided which 3 I want to get between the SN850, 980 Pro or the FireCuda and an ElecGear heatsink - The first two are below £125 a lot, FireCude is about £140.

From what I've read even those unlicensed adapters require the same internal SSD module that is in the official expansion and those are hard to come by and just as expensive. I haven't seen any adapter that allows for a standard m.2 bought from amazon or newegg to work with XSX. Maybe I missed it.

Still doesn't have to have that tax though. I know the tech doesn't justify it.

Definitely what I was thinking. Drives that match the Series X speeds are even cheaper than the ones the PS5 uses. They really could have had a dirt cheap expansion option without losing the convenience or being hot swappable.

Sony has always had open market storage swapping in their home consoles since the start of adding them with the PS3. MS has always had non-removable or propriety in all their consoles, baring the expanded storage in the One era. One step forward, two steps backwards, monetarily for the consumer.

Was scrolling down and wasn't surprised it only took 4 post in for the thread to take this turn.

As has been pointed out, this has been a hotly debated subject in the past. I don't see anything wrong with pointing out that those of said this would happen were right.

Tell that to PC gamers.

What do you mean? Gaming PCs are built with standard, non-proprietary parts.

If we are talking about the NVMEs they cost the same as the ones the PS5 can use. But overall as a system? It can definitely be a lot more expensive than a console.
The point is proprietary does not mean more expensive. Microsoft could easily tank the prices of their ssd expansions if they wanted.

The market is a little funny right now also. Typically the previous gen drives (gen3 in this case) get quickly phased out and are replaced by 4 channel next-gen equivalents. That hasn't been the case as much so far, though I'm sure it will happen. Makes it harder for the e-19, etc. to reduce in cost for Seagate. Hopefully, we do see some cuts soon, the price of the 1TB is starting to look insane. I was expecting maybe a 150% price, but we are starting to push over 200%.

I'll still take the plug and play nature though because I could swap between different storage cards if needed, vs. throwing the old away and replacing with a larger one.

For sure. Plus overtime the drives get cheaper to make so the price should reflect that.

If it was me instead of throwing it in the trash I would turn it into an external and use it for cold storage. No point in throwing it away if you can still use it.

and are way more expensive.

PC parts are sold for profit and consoles are closed systems sold at near cost. PCs are not subsidized by game sale royalties. Consoles are. Either way, it doesn't make sense to compare console accessory sales to system sales with entirely different business models.

The point is propriety does not mean more expensive. Microsoft could easily tank the prices of their ssd expansions if they wanted.

In the context of console storage, proprietary has always been more expensive. Xbox Series storage expansion is just the lastest example.

Here we go again...

You suddenly expect them to subsidise a high margin low volume peripheral?

In the world of gaming consoles proprietary storage has always been more expensive than an open market standard. Some disingenuous comparison to many of the more more specialist and niche components that make up gaming PC's doesn't change that.

If they had this deal a few months ago I may
have gotten this drive for PC. But my drive is plenty fast at 5.1 gb/s, surely good enough for any game this gen.

Sony rips you off with $70 dollar games. Microsoft rips you off with the ssd expansions. Potato potato.
