In the evening, you're in the mess watching the news and the President is saying you are going to Korea. Who is telling the truth and what the hell is going on in your chain of command? Not a carrier, all they have for defense is planes, and those won't help much. Carriers depend on the ships around them, the cruisers and destroyers, for missile defense. Hence "carrier strike groups".

If it's an ICBM, I don't think the aegis can shoot it down. There's an anti-ICBM tech in development to be used with the aegis system, but it's not very reliable in tests.
