So if North Korea had done anything based on these reports, there would have not been an actual carrier in place to launch defenses?

Imagine being a low ranking sailor on those ships. In the morning your section leader is telling you are just gonna be dicking around in the Indian Ocean. In the evening, you're in the mess watching the news and the President is saying you are going to Korea. Who is telling the truth and what the hell is going on in your chain of command? Even the Admiral in charge of the Task Force has to be confused.

A lot? Naval ships carry many different missile countermeasures.

Not a carrier, all they have for defense is planes, and those won't help much. Carriers depend on the ships around them, the cruisers and destroyers, for missile defense. Hence "carrier strike groups".

That's why carriers have destroyers sailing with them in case of a missle attack. Hence the term "carrier group".

My point is that if NK launches a missile at SK or Japan what can a carrier group do about it? They're more of a deterrent than an actual defence.

The destroyers and cruisers around the carrier will detect it and launch a defense in a matter of seconds to a minute. The systems on Aegis cruisers and destroyers can detect a missile launch anywhere in the world, almost immediately.

So is that what they're talking about when they threatened to shoot down the next missile test?

If it's an ICBM, I don't think the aegis can shoot it down. There's an anti-ICBM tech in development to be used with the aegis system, but it's not very reliable in tests.
