But people wanted to associate the IP with failure, which just isn't true.
I love aliens, but the franchise overall has been quite poorly handled with more misses than hits.

Movies:
Alien - amazing, one of the GOATs
Aliens - incredible, one of the GOATs
Alien 3 - good, especially the "real" version, but not amazing
Alien Resurrection - start of the downfall, ok but not great
Alien vs Predator - not great
AVPR - not great
Prometheus - mixed bag, I personally loved it despite it's very big flaws
Covenant - dogshit terrible

Games:
Alien 3 on SNES was amazing, good on megadrive
AVP 1 and 2 on PC - amazing.
AVP on 360/PS3 - very good
Colonial Marines - terrible
Isolation - very good

The franchise overall could be considered a bit of a failure IMO because after the first 2 movies it has all been downhill basically. Nothing has even come close to matching them, and same with the games - they've just gotten worse and worse basically with the odd exception.

Anyone got a good guide to the skills? Just drop in whatever or are there some absolute must have or must avoids? I feel like that weird tetris mechanic is poorly explained but might be critical.

Anyone doing the challenges? My kid wanted to play so I set it to casual and noticed some quest to destroy 40 maintenence bots or whatever. What do you get for doing this?

Aldo, is there a hidden cache every level for every class or once you find it for a class is that it?

So I'm a bit confused, I'm reading here that people are finding weapon drops? I thought weapons were class unlocks?

I'm really interested to play the game but I'm worried about the longevity. I'm a so-so Aliens fan but loves 3rd person shooters. After Outriders, I'm a bit wary when it comes to third person controls. They felt really horrible in Outriders, even after adjusting the sensitivities and such. I don't think they ever got it right with that one. Although I finished it once, it always felt very wrong every time I come back Outriders, feels like I'm walking through mud. Are the controls snappy and responsive? My baseline would be The Division games (I dont have an Xbox, I heard the gold standard are the Gears games)

Neolombax Neolombax are far as can gather there is a hidden weapons cache in each level.

Man this game is pretty great. I am enjoying it quite a lot. It's definitely not a pushover even on casual difficulty. I failed the mission when I was playing because there were three bullet sponge warriors.

The cache system seems to pull from a loot pool that exhausts itself past a certain point. After that point you receive cards + consumables I think.

I think there are some degree of randomness to weapons, as I got a gun in the intense campaign that some people apparently got during their standard campaign runs. It could be tied to the class use/remaining weapons not unlocked pool however.

As for skills, once it became clear what each class specialties are it's a lot easier to spec into. I think your basic group makeup that has a good chance of success is Gunner + Demo + (one of the support classes). Gunner is your single target burst dps, Demo is crowd control/ AE damage. A gunner makes those elite targets significantly easier due to damage buffs and target debuffs.

Currently I think the worst class is Doc - as the trauma station design goes against the flow of the game by requiring your group to ration medpacks for the Doc player. All the other classes are largely self sustaining in terms of abilities while Doc relies on medpacks to recharge the trauma station.

You missed out....

Aliens C64
US version. A hot turd that's a collection of mini games
UK version. Considered one of the first survival horror games in first person where you can switch between characters.

The skill tree has 3 base skills for each class on the outside of the squares. The squares have a few empty slots and from memory around 16 locked squares that unlock as that class levels up. You're right about the Tetris mechanic, you can rotate and place other perks into the squares bit some will link to your existing skillset and these can also stack with other perks in adjacent slots. Some skills are unlocked, some are rewards.

At the bottom of the challenge it'll tell you what you get suck as 80 Rep Sit points, 800 whatever-the-currency is called and maybe a couple of random items. I completed one yesterday, finish 3 levels with the Tech and was rewarded very handsomely.

There is one cache per stage and the location is random so changes each round. The cache appears for everyone and the items are random.
So I'm a bit confused, I'm reading here that people are finding weapon drops? I thought weapons were class unlocks?

You can pick up or be rewarded with weapons from any class and you can see these in your inventory between levels but you can only use weapons specific to your class. You change class before each mission and everything in your inventory is viewable but it won't let you select what you can't use, such as a large Optic scope (for Sniper) on a Pulse Rifle.

That it has, but that doesn't make it any less loved, y'know? The fans that exist love it for the universe and just want more good to come out of it. There are so many possibilities.

I respect your film list, I basically feel the same way, but Requiem is my least favorite Alien affiliated film in that entire list, haha. I adored Prometheus since day 1, never really understood flak that it got. A lot of the complaints were essentially an echo chamber revolving around things that really weren't THAT important and were actions just to move the film forward. It's like watching a horror or thriller film and saying the movie sucked because characters made poor choices. It happens, lol. Covenant to me, while very weird in a lot of ways, had some really cool moments. I just really wish the second film could've been done on the same production (and quality) level as Prometheus, and we got the third film too. Sucks now that there's just this blank that will most likely never be fulfilled. I hope there's at least a book or something.

Agree on the games! Alien Trilogy on PS1 was also solid at the time of its release. As was AVP on Jaguar.

I suppose it could, but the merchandise says otherwise IMO. There's been movies, games, books, and comics. A show is also in the works. I think they know that love is there, they just really need to give the IP what it deserves.

You should start reading some of the books. Even the latest videogame prequel book is really decent.

Currently going through The Cold Forge and that's been great so far. Very much a page turner!

My only gripes with this game so far is I think there should be another hidden cache per stage for a total of 2 and the game needs more rare items. There's hardly any outfits in the game from what I can see, only a couple of different helmets, a beanie, a cowboy hat and a cap.

It feels like I have the best muzzle already after the first game as the other 12 or so I've earned have had similar or less stats.

See I was thinking this game was more along the lines of Friday the 13th where a group of marines is up against 1 Alien! I this more like The Division or am I completely wrong here? Maybe more like Gears of War? I really wanna get it as I'm a big Aliens fans.

Dude, if you're a big Aliens fan then you can't go wrong with this. Think of it as a more condensed looter-shooter, sort of a Division-lite if you will.

It's a bit budgety in places but the license definitely elevates it. The devs have done a really good job in that regard as it features a ton of references and eastereggs to the books, comics and films. Plus it's dirt cheap so you really have no excuse. ;)

Can't get enough myself, always playing it with homies. Need some new maps for horde though.
Yeah man, I'm about 30 hours in so far and I really have to force myself to stop. Unlocking new things, completing challenges, leveling up all weapons & classes and trying to go for higher difficulties is just digitized crack lol. The cherry on top being it's set in the Aliens universe of course.

That said I do hope they tackle the more glaring technical issues sooner rather than later though. For instance I still haven't gotten the Intense Achievment yet even though I'm pretty sure I've done all missions multiple times on intense difficulty now. They really need patch the campaign menu with a difficulty tracker for each mission so we can get a better overview for that sort of stuff. And even though the game runs perfectly fine it can still slow down whenever I'm using the Recon's class main ability, which somehow tanks fps for me.

Also I really hope for the new campaign DLC's we'll get to explore Pala Station and its surroundings. Would be great if we get to visit 'that' cabin from the prequel book and explore a natural environment with cool fauna and flora. Fingers crossed!

If this game catches you snoozing it can be pretty punishing lol. I've wiped a couple times now playing Standard even with other people. It's like "We're good this is easy, we're good this is easy, we're good this is easy... OH MY GOD WERE OVERRUN"

Then its a full mission reset my god lol. I like it though there's some actual intensity in trying not to die.

Also, I the difficulty ramp up with more people is pretty noticeable. We just wiped hard with 3 people. One guy left so we ran it back with 2 people and the bot, and that wave that killed us I swear was much less intense with only two real players.

Enjoying horde mode. Might be time to pick another weapon specialism.

"There are some places in the universe on Intense/Extreme you don't go alone".

And that includes wandering off on your own to find a hidden cache.

One thing of note

I appreciate the quick startup time. Hit x a few times and you're in the game quickly - no login nonsense, no pushing you to sign up for another account.

No mandatory intro logos. All of it seemingly skippable with a few button presses. It feels almost old school how fast it is.

In an era where devs and console manufacturers focus on reducing loading and speeding up loading times, actual login and network backend processing is as slow as ever.

It seems like there's no pause in game, but I was able to suspend and resume on PS5 during my single player runs with the bots.

It's based off Aliens action. It won't be scurry.

I'd say the game is worth it at $20 but they are really selling you an early access game with 4 levels and a horde mode for $40.

i refunded,

maybe when it hits 10 in the future i will try again.

Got ten minutes into it. Zero atmosphere, none. Just instant pew pew pew in bright corridors with some of the worst layered sound effects I've heard in years..

What the hell is this shit? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

is this from the sam studio to bring Rambo , terminator etc, and I think possible the robocop game. why not jut do these franchises justice and make them aaa games with budgets .

This game isnt amazing by any means but Im having fun with it. There are definitely times that kinda scratch that Aliens itch of just trying not to be overrun by the swarm. Also I finally completed the last mission and....

Running from the Queen really hit perfectly. I can see how this encounter could end up being very messy but it worked well for the team I was on. Has anyone tried to attack the Queen? Does she actually chase you? Or just pop out at certain points?

He's right you know! Infiltrator was pretty good and entertaining. Out of the Shadows and River of Pain were both really good. Hoping to get into Sea of Sorrow soon!

Yup, definitely The Division + L4D with a hint of Gears of War. If you're a big fan, you'll definitely enjoy it regardless. I personally adore it, much more than I was expecting to.

Way too much HUD, just let me turn it off..
There are actually a number of things you CAN turn off, but the devs plan on adding more toggles.

Can't get enough myself, always playing it with homies. Need some new maps for horde though.
Agreed! 30+ hours and I'm still going, lmao. After unlocking Horde I couldn't help but notice "Chapter 1" being a part of the map's title. So, we're definitely getting more.

I guess it's just simply not for you and a few others in here, and that's fine! Sorry you had such a weak experience, it's been polar opposite for me.

It's Aliens, it's not meant to be scary, it's meant to be chaotic and tense, and you don't get that vibe in the first level by any means. But you get it later ten fold, especially with raised difficulty.

Like I've said before, if you can go into this with reserved expectations knowing it's a AA/Indie studio budget title, then you'll be fine. You may like it, you may love it, it's up to you to find out. It's priced low for a reason. I wouldn't be surprised if they were originally funded with this being a "test" to see how it'd do, and it generating success will bring it a brighter and more prosperous future. At least I hope so. The game has a brilliant core gameplay loop, it's just upsetting that it wasn't a AAA budgeted title in the first place.

Just completed the campaign and had a great time of it. Not sure where to go from here though. While I could crank up the difficulty, I just don't know what I would be striving for. I'll give Horde mode a shot but for now I might be done.

There's just a bunch of miscellaneous items to find if you care to. Hidden caches can still be found in levels and provide goodies. Completing a number of things with specific difficulties, etc. also provide other things as well. Horde mode as well after completing a specific number of waves.

There's more content to come in the future, even more chapters, game modes, etc. according to the devs.

I may go for obtaining all the logs. Also need to check the achievements and see if there is anything there that looks to keep me entertained while I wait. All in all however, I had a really good time playing through this.

Been playing this with my mate today. Really good fun. Much better than I expected. Love all the sound effects of the guns and aliens.

I originally thought all the aliens were the same (Like the one from the first movie) but when you see a drone or warrior come at you, they are about double the size and run on both feet, seriously cool.

The canon fodder Aliens are actually supposed to be the dog aliens from Alien 3. The drones are the Aliens from Alien.

They need to do a more movie-centric horde level where you go into a hive, only fighting tons of Warriors (that aren't bullet sponges) and fight a Queen at the end. Maybe in a powerloader.... They could charge another $40 and I'd buy it!!! It would then be the GOAT Aliens game of all-time.

It should only take like three or four shots, or one shotgun blast to the head to take a Warrior Xenomorph down, not like four clips....

Haha, I'd be totally cool with that. Right? Man, if this game had a larger budget.... It would legit be the best Aliens game of all time. Honestly, I already think it is, but I'm sure I'll feel that way even more so once all the content is there.

Oh yeah, totally true, but it makes sense with the gameplay they're going for. Gotta have them boss units.

The "dog" alien was actually originally supposed to be born from an ox. The scene was restored in the Assembly Cut (aka the good version of Alien 3):

Makes more sense considering the size of the alien (it gets quite large) and the fact that prisoners probably wouldn't be allowed to have rottweilers lol

The 'endgame' is very much a collect-a-thon but I very much enjoy that aspect of it. Once I've four-starred everything, finished all campaigns on Insane and unlocked all cosmetics then I'll be done. :goog_lol:
