Almost 20 million Quest 2s sold since Oct 2020, on pace with Xbox Series consoles

For comparison, the Quest 2, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles all launched around the same time:

Meta’s VP of VR Mark Rabkin gave the statistic to staff during an internal roadmap presentation, The Verge’s Alex Heath reports. For comparison, PlayStation 5 had officially sold 32 million units as of February 2 and estimates from December put Xbox Series X|S at around 20 million.

That's considering the Quest 2's price went up $100. Almost no other gaming device has pulled this move.

The previous VR top-selling device was the PSVR1, which is estimated to have sold around 6 million devices in 6 years. Quest 2 more than tripled its lifetime sales in 1/3 of the timeframe.

I just hope this keeps the pressure on them to make Quest games all BC for a while as they move forward. I've bought like 2 dozen games already.

Not bad.
20 million in just over 2 years outpaces a lot of good selling consoles I would imagine. 360 had to be around that mark and that was their best seller. What's really crazy is the quest's $100 price hike and it's still keeping pace.
If the number is true, that's really good if you think of xCloud and day 1 Pc releases.

How are game sales doing for Quest 2? Everyone I know that has one dont buy games, if you know what I mean. I sold mine 2-3 months after Ive bought it but it was a nice VR headset, just not for me.

Eh, no.

Need to see how active that console base is, and 20 millions in what, 3 years(?), isn't a lot.

Not bad, but it's not a lot.
But it's pretty much the same numbers as Xbox Series X + Xbox Series S (likely a few hundred thousand more than that).

Does anybody think that Xbox Series X and S (combined) are a niche product?

That's exactly why these numbers paint the Xbox in a bad way.VR is a recent thing, and the Quest even more so. And Xbox barely beats it, while the Switch and the PS5 barely have that problem. And the Xbox is a thing for what now, more than 20+ years?

Which begs the question: Just how longer can the Xbox remain viable, as a brand and as a product?

Didn't MS just recently debunk those VGChartz numbers themselves? Like - by a substantial amount too.

Forgot the Switch, which is at ~ 122 M.

But sure, everyone has it's own standards.

Switch been out like 10 years dawg, PS5, SX, and Quest 2 are effectively launch aligned (i.e approx 2.5 years of availability). They sold that many units with no IP and not even any single-A productions, just bunch of literal amateur indie shit (not even seasoned indie devs).

Xbox numbers are also bad when you compare it to the same timeframe as the Switch's early years(2017 until late 2019).

Whereas my wife rarely if ever picks up a traditional controller to play a game but uses the quest 2 most days to play beat saber.

Anecdotes are worthless.
Yeah I know a Beat Saber gamer too, also a woman, she use it as workout.
Anyhow, I’m interested in knowing who many that are still using it, because total sales numbers only tell half the story if they’re used to prove that a platform is currently doing well. Would be interesting to see a graph for sales per month since launch to see if popularity is going down or up.

considering overall game sales on that other thread it must be for VR porn… because it’s certainly not for gaming.
I tried VR Porn once. Laying on my back checking out the detail of the scenery around me. Frame 1 that I look in front of me I see a bunch of questionable looking genitals rapidly making it's way for my face. I got jump scared by vagina and have not been the same man ever since.

It's too bad that FB is so focused on the self contained line. Taking the workings of the Quest 3 and removing everything needed to run the software locally on the device (but keeping just enough power to support airlink) and you'd have a really nice companion device for PC gamers. Would be interesting to see how much they could shave off the price and what that would do to adoption rates.

You could sell 50m headsets and it could still be a niche offering though. It depends as much on the software sales as it does the hardware, since that is a good indicator of how "used" the devices are. Hopefully software sales and gaming hours are as high on the Quest 2 as they are on Xbox, as that indicates satisfied customers that will stay interested. Where users that purchased a Quest 2 but rarely used it would be less likely to invest in future VR endeavors.
