Ampere Analysis: Console sales Q3 2021: PS5 supply improves bringing it closer to Switch

From Ampere Analysis,

PS5 supply improved in Q3 across Western markets

Nintendo Switch has dominated global sell-through in 2021, but Q3 sales were closer between Nintendo’s family of devices and Sony’s PS5. In particular, Sony made substantial headway in Western markets where supply was improved and where demand was high. This culminated in PS5 outselling Switch in Europe by some distance. NPD also reported that in the US PS5 outsold Switch for the first time in September. However, Nintendo is once again expected to substantially outsell the other consoles in Q4 helped by the launch of Switch OLED, the seasonal momentum Nintendo enjoys and product availability.

Xbox Series S outsells Series X across several key markets

Microsoft’s two-tier product strategy was a bold move at launch of the Series generation and the lesser-powered Series S has come into its own against a backdrop of component shortages and Xbox Series X supply constraints. As a digital-only product, the strong adoption of Series S is having an outweighed impact on digital games sales to Xbox Series consoles when compared to PlayStation 5. Sony continues to take a more conservative approach to its digital-only PS5 console mix, with the disc-based version of the console taking a dominant position in the market.

Can you even buy a new PS4 at retail price anymore? Just looking online quickly, Amazon, Walmart, BestBuy and none of them had PS4s, just inflated to hell 3rd party sellers.
i saw a 1TB PS4 slim at walmart today but i didnt see a price tag on it lol

You can only buy pre-owned ones in Australia. Switch has plenty of stock though. This pandemic has done wonders for the Switch.

Will remain that way until at least Q2 2022 I think.
? Market leader is not the one that sold the most new systems in a give month. The market includes sales of SW to existing systems.
Even if PS5 sells more per month, Switch has a larger install base and thus a larger addressable market for SW sales and well more fucking Software for sale both new and old.

At some point Switch will wane and the PS5 will still have a smaller install base, but be selling much more SW. As a Switch and PS5 owner I hope this is sooner than later because it means new Nintendo system & PS5 not collecting dust.

If we include software I would expect PS5 to overtake Switch in the not too distant future, due to the stronger support PS5 will get from Western AAA third parties.

3rd-party sales will make PS5 sells more software than Switch very sooner than later.

You can look at PS4 sales that due the same reason had way more software sales with the same Switch userbase.

Why's everyone ignoring the PS4 still exists? It still has the higher numbers in both hardware and software. It's still the market leader. The Switch has to break that barrier first.

Lucky for Microsoft they don't look at console sales and only worry about gamepass numbers. They also aren't competing with Sony or Nintendo so they wouldn't be worried at all...
Sony will smash them again this gen without a competent sub service, and I'm not upset about that to be honest. Nintendo showing the way though- just release games people want to play no matter the resolution.

I’m guessing your first couple sentences are sarcasm, since your last one is right on the money. Make games people actually want to play and sell them. People will buy. It’s so simple and so dead obvious.

All of this “we put you at the center of gaming” or “Sony and Nintendo aren’t ready for this disruption” is complete and utter horse crap when you can’t move product. These numbers are obviously pretty bad for one group. And the idea that there is a host of people wanting an Xbox Game Pass sub that doesn’t want, you know … an Xbox is ridiculous.

Just make creative, compelling games. Shut up and let your content do the talking. People won’t ignore that.

Little bit of sarcasm and little bit of truth in it as well. They have stated they aren't competing in the console race with Sony and seem to be only interested in game pass subscriptions now. Either way, Sony looks set dominate again this gen and that is without a massive 1st party release since Ratchet. They just have a stranglehold on the market at the moment and, along with Nintendo (both seem to be traditional console companies) they're killing the opposition right now.

Watch this Takashi guy miss another Sony prediction with his dubious "insiders" Someone will be fuming after the next quarter I'm afraid, lmao.
He was talking about ASSEMBLY plans so manufacturing. This thread is about the last quarter's PS5 which were already manufactured months ago.

We wont find out if he was full of shit until the sales of the April-June quarter show a decline.

Longer with the chip shortages which are said to last three more years, Sony cannot as easily produce PS5's as Nintendo can Switch's (Nintendo is stockpiling for the holidays which they'll win big).

By the time this happens Switch's Pro model or successor will be out.

Shame for anyone that would like to see real numbers for sales. This chip shortage is really damping what could be. You have to put an asterisk by future charts because the momentum the PS4 had was about to have a crazy effect on PS5 sales.

Look on different message boards and you'll see the hunger and frustration is still there. They could put 10 million up tomorrow and they would sell out.

Of course there is at least a million sitting around in scalpers hands right now, probably way more. Many experts think 10 to 15% of sales have gone to scalpers. I'd say at least 15.

The chip shortage is going to last aprox 3 years.

By the time it's over Switch's successor will be out.

Both are being affected but Sony obviously much moreso because of newer components.

Are the materials for these chips on a low ... i read outside LA? or Mexico? were some Tanker waiting to unload their cargo. Why not use airplanes for these tiny chips.

Would not be surprised, if this was "all artificially orchestrated".

Sony managed to secure more of AMD's tsmc wafer allocation than either microsoft or even amd themselves last year. I don't think AMD has short changed themselves so much this time so sony is having a decline in supply because of that.

"Sony is the final act in the list, closing it at a -3% growth, despite the PS5 flying off the shelves. Sony has had difficulty in securing components amidst the ongoing logistics and demand discrepancies in abnormal market conditions - so much so that the company reduced its forecast for PS5 console sales until March 2022 by 1 million units."

You realize the Switch has never in it's life sold more software than Sony, right? Don't let big Nintendo exclusive numbers fool you, Sony sells more third party games than anyone in the console market. Ever.

Sony's PlayStation 4 has sold over 1.5 billion games, beating any other platform in games industry history--including the PS2.

That is why they are the market leader.

switch is currently at 681 million software without download-only games (Nintendo's total only includes downloads if they have a physical release)
at the same time in the ps4s life, it was at like 700 million total software with download-only games, and the switch does it without being the system of choice for the fifa/madden/cod/gta casuals without those 4 series the ps4's software total after 4.5 years would have only been in the 550 million range

Sony doesn't sell third party games, they do however get a modest commission for allowing third parties to host their software on Playstation.

It's not like selling hundreds of millions of first party games and getting all the profits.

A bit disingenuous because Nintendo includes the operating income from mobile games.

Edit: Those numbers don’t look right. What’s the source for this?

The source is Nintendo and Sony's annual fiscal reports.

Nintendo and Sony both broke internal fiscal year profit records in 2020 but as you can see, Nintendo's are close to double Sony's.

Also, Nintendo's profits from mobile games are relatively minuscule in their total profits.

Operating profits of PS1+PS2+PS3+PS4+PSV = $12.98Bn

Operating profits of Switch in just 4 years = $14.98Bn

Selling software at cheap price and giving away for free in from of bundle doesn't make you a leader.

Ok, so these numbers are for FY2021, not FY2020. Nintendo did make a bigger profit than Playstation but Playstation’s revenue was $8B more than Nintendo. That’s in a year where covid hugely benefited Nintendo and Sony launched the PS5 at a loss.
