So for those not in "the know":

  • Typically around this time of year, for the past couple years, you get scratch-off tickets for free every day on login. Usually you got shitty prizes like AP pots (basically stamina, allows you to continue playing the game), materials that you need a bajillion of to upgrade things, etc. Every once in a while you would get something good like a premium character or summon (Playable characters in the game). Everybody got something, mostly disappointment, as the premium stuff was rare. The game would mock you for fun no matter what you got by saying a message "boy we sure are generous!" which became a meme. You get another chance with this every day through the campaign and despite rising and falling levels of salt, the community kinda embraced it.
  • This year, they opt for a new system. Every day through the period on login, you got a randomly generated 3 digit number. After 2 weeks or so of them, they will pick numbers out of a hat, and people will win items based on how many matching numbers you had. There are 4 "tiers" of redeemable items you can win. You can win multiple times with your set of cards. The game is rigged in a way that you will win at least twice as long as you collect all the cards via log in.
    • Tier 1 - Typical best rewards - premium weapons/characters that save you a ton of grind, or otherwise very valuable items, such as a ticket to let you pick literally anything from the game, including promotional characters and ultra limited characters.
    • Tier 2 - 100,000 of the premium currency. This is enough to allow you to roll enough times on ANY banner to not only get the target of the banner that you want, but also whatever riffraff comes along the way. Insanely good prize that dwarfs the value of the other prizes in that tier.
    • Tier 3 - Selectable premium limited characters and summons.
    • Tier 4 - Here's the good part - 1/75th of an item that will eventually get you the ticket mentioned in tier 1. Normal grindable materials that you get oodles of just by playing the game normally.
  • The math works out in such a way, with the 3 digit numbers on the cards, that about half or more of the playerbase should win SOMETHING besides the guaranteed 2x Tier 4 rewards.
At a first look, you think: Over half of the playerbase should come out of this with at least something good. That's so much better than most gacha games where only whales and lucky people in the top 5% get all the best stuff. In reality it has completely alienated the other half of the playerbase that essentially get pennies while everyone else is enjoying AT LEAST a nice steak dinner from Ruth's Chris. Both Japanese and English twitter are alight with people posting their displeasure directly to the game's official account. Many players "saying" they have, or will, quit. Lots of memes.

So the question I leave to you GAF; do you think that Cygames made a mistake with this event, and that the gap between Tier 3 winners and Tier 4 plebians is too much? Or do you think that a lot of himming and hawwing is going on among the playerbase that will get over it in a few days and be right back in there?

No matter how this plays out, as an extremely casual player of the game, I enjoy it when things get shaken up a bit.
And, for those wondering: I was one of the unlucky ones that only got 2 Tier 4 rewards, the absolute minimum.

The gap between tier 4 vs Tier 3-1 was definitely a stupid move on their part. Probably should have had Tier 4 reward also be sparkable or give everyone a Grand, but they clearly didn't understand just how valuable the higher tiers were. That said, RNG is RNG, the more you compare, the more salty you'll get over it especially within your crew. It would be nice if they responded or did something different next year, but I don't know if it'll last. You've got GW.

Certainly is the biggest meltdown I've seen for GBF as far as I can remember.

Even giving everyone a ticketable pick for Tier 4 would be better. And let's be honest, they should just remove all the items other than the moons from T4 anyways, since the rest are completely worthless.

I wasn't playing the game back when "monkeygate" happened, when all the megawhales rebelled for not being able to get Andira and then they added the sparking system. I'd have to assume this is probably 2nd to that.

Just checked, got two 4 tiers and a 2 tier.

Get to choose an SSR of my choice, pretty nice. Would've been ecstatic with two (or a tier 1) but no complaints.

Granblue has always been one of the most generous gacha around, with free 10 pulls everyday on anniversaries or special weeks, and tons of gems, so I think it's a bit shitty of people to complain about not getting anything good.

Tell that the DereSute, where I've been through about 4 of their yearly raffles with nothing to show for it.

Edit: Just noticed, you have tiers 1 and 2 back to front.

Edit 2: Checked in-game and realised the 100k of gems is selectable with the tier 2 ticket.

So, a character/weapon of my choice, or enough gems to guarantee a character/weapon of my choice (need 90k for pity)

I mean you're literally proving the point of why people are mad. The ones that got tiers 1-3 got something pretty amazing for free. The have-nots are the ones that are upset about this. You're crazy if you don't take the crystals.

100% It's like how they throw out the billions of soul berries during Scratcher. At the very least with Scratcher, the pool is set in a way that I understand each "tier" of reward and it may piss me off but you'll eventually get something decent.

Ah right monkeygate. Good times, lol. Well, #グラブル引退 is trending, but they're gonna be back when Gachapin returns...

Honestly, it sounds like they ended up being way too generous at the lower tiers and that's causing folks to be mad. At least with more top-heavy distributions, you can chalk it to poor luck but when a large majority of people are getting good stuff, it can be annoying to get things that are kind pointless.

I think they should suffer for playing shitty gachas

Wait for the JRPG to come out
Counterpoint, without the gacha, there would be no RPG.

Yea now that the hot takes and pissed posts are calming down, everybody seems to agree that the disparity between tier 4 and then everything above it is just too big. Also, Tier 2 was too good with the 100k crystals. Depending on your grind level, that's a more appealing reward than the tier 1 stuff. Regardless, this is from a multi million dollar company who should have had analysts to break this kind of thing down. Hell, most of the playerbase itself was waiting for things to play out exactly as they have since they could see it coming from a mile away.

Granblue as a Single Player RPG likely would have never existed without the IP blowing up as a browser/mobage. CyGames tend to push into other genres and medias with their titles if it hits off. Their Anime Studio and Console Game Studio in Osaka were established in 2016 after all.

So it got big enough that KMR had to respond and they just gave everyone an extra card with Tier III rewards

I mean I'll take free stuff, but it doesn't really solve the problem of why people were mad. The gulf between Tier 1-3 players and tier 4 players was huge. This does nothing to change that. I just recently found out about the "#retiregrub" stuff going around where top guilds disbanded, players streamed themselves deleting their grids. I even read where this is now bleeding into horsegirls, priconne etc. Their stock is also tanking, but that's probably a short term thing.

What a bone-headed move to even make the lottery in such a way.

Yeah. The following tweet dropped that they take all opinions into consideration and feedback seriously, don't know if they'll do anything. Maybe they'll change it if they bring it back, maybe it won't come back at all... really should have just had Tier 4 be this universal reward in the first place. And ye, that was the hashtag I mentioned earlier, it went on all day and I initially didn't think it'd have a serious effect but lot of people got involved on top of the official account being spammed with it. Some are still not content that it was given to everyone and not only Tier 4 winners.

Also, poor guy. Oof.
