In view of its further expansion and growth in the gaming market, Bandai Namco Entertainment has begun the development of a new proprietary graphics engine. The company's intention is to become technologically independent and create new ambitious open world experiences.

The Chief Technology Officer in charge of directing the work on the new graphics engine is Julien Merceron , former supervisor of the Fox Engine used by Konami for Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain and, more extensively, for the eFootball series. Merceron has stated that it will be an engine designed to better support large-scale games , first on all open worlds.

"The reason for the in-house production is that we want to continue to have the technological capabilities to build a solid foundation on our own, rather than rely on game engines made by other companies ," said Bandai Namco's Yoshiyasu Horiuchi. "I think the development started in 2018. Subsequently, the concept of the game engine was verified by several people and, based on this prototyping, the full-scale development started around 2019 " .

The engine does not yet have a name, but it should be ready to be used in the development of the next games made in-house by Bandai Namco within the next year.

Does this mean new Arc System Works games will feature this new engine as they are published by Bandai Namco?

Good to see a custom engine being developed should be amazing given Fox Engine was a stunner.
All engines are stunners. In theory any artist and developer should be able to paint any picture they want in a given engine it’s a matter of how easy was it for them to achieve that, how much was automated and how well
It performs.

Honestly chances are the engine itself won’t be that great as a game engine. Will games using it still look pretty? Probably,
unless something inherently wrong with it getting in the way of artists and developers. But it likely won’t be some technical marvel or powerful in the sense that it enables developers to do more with less.

Japanese culture/market does not foster the kinds of talent that would be great at this kind of highly technilcal and developer empowerpment type of projects. They pay them crap and don't look highly upon people doing this work. On the other hand companies like Epic and Unity are located in areas where alot of the top tech talent of the world can be found and are willing to sponsor people from around the world to come work for them and pay them top dollar (100-400k/year depending on role/exp).

With all that said it's possible that NAmco Bandai was able to find all the best talent in Japan and could have created something unique and powerful. Who knows. But the fact that their stance is that they just don't want to rely on 3rd party tools instead of thinking they can build a better mousestrap that suits their needs for the types of games they want to make doens't seem like they are setting a high bar or are motivaited by doing things better.
