Battlefield 2042 Gameplay | New Look At Battlefield Portal

They actually uploaded this one in 4k60.

There is A LOT of info at this link:

Maps
At launch these modes are available:
  • Conquest Large
  • Conquest
  • Rush
  • Free-For-All
  • Team Deathmatch
If you’re picking Conquest Large, you’ll be able to choose from all of our 128 player Maps in Battlefield 2042, and if you’re picking either Conquest or Rush, you’ll be able to also add any of Battlefield Portals classic maps into your rotations.

If you’re instead selecting one of our Rules Editor enabled templates of FFA, or TDM, you’ll also have the option to choose from predefined smaller variants of our existing maps, providing you with more variety, and more opportunity to find a map playstyle that best suits your vision.

Most importantly, we’re not defining that limit for you. If you want to take the Noshahr Canals: Container Area map, and crank it up to 128 players, have at it. We think you’re mad, but it's your Battlefield, and your rules!

Soldier
With the Core of the Gameplay designed, you can then start to manage the behaviour of Infantry on the servers. There are 9 on/off toggles at play here:
  • Prone
  • Strafe while sprinting
  • Sprint
  • Aim Down Sights
  • Health Regeneration
  • Traversal Sprint
  • Slide
  • Squad Revive
... There's a lot more info, but not going to post it all here. Check link above.

Portal is going to be amazing.

But they've said the matchmaking for Portal will be a bit different.

It's neat that EVERYONE can have the settings they want, just EVERYONE will have to prepare for tumbleweeds in their servers and low player counts.

Apparently there will be lists that Dice makes themselves, those will probably be the easiest to get a full server of.

This is a bad idea. It didnt work for Killzone Shadowfall. People dont like creating playlists and modes, and most of these will never be played.

What they needed to do was just do simple playlists with maps on rotation. All these random restrictions on weapons and classes is only going to dilute the map pool and the player pool.

The mode that will likely be THE mode in Battlefield 2042 in the end if DICE does it right. Loved Noshahr Canals and it looks sick here, I can't wait!.

Lol at referencing an extremely niche multiplayer title like Killzone Shadowfall. The best experiences will rise to the top just like any user generated content.

Killzone Shadowfall was on 1 system. This is on 5

They already have bots populating their main mode. Regardless, the issue isnt the playerbase but the interest. most gamers dont seek out fancy modes. They just want to login and enter matchmaking. No one wants to sift through thousands of playlists.

They won’t have to. The best won’t be hard to find at all

DICE LA (now Ripple Effect) saving Battlefield yet again.

Don't get why EA just doesn't give them the franchise and let DICE Sweden just make Battlefront and be Frostbite support for their other studios.

The beta ran like dog shit on PS5, alongside other issues I had with it. But portal is what gets me really excited about this game. I cancelled my pre-order after the beta and I’m not sure if I want it yet or if I should wait. This makes it difficult to wait.

BF1942 versus modern Battlefield vehicles/weapons is so dumb.
Who would play that crap? Shit is retarded.

The more I see of it - the more I feel Portal is just tacked on at the last minute. Community made custom servers never work in multiplayer games.

This pretty much is the BFBC2 / BF3 & BF4 remasters in one package.
Not even close. Theres only 4 of BC2/BF3's 35+ maps here.

Easily one of the dumbest takes I've seen in a long time. Community custom servers have been in the series for awhile and have worked amazingly well, especially for BF4.

If you actually read the information about the mode, you'd see that it's far from "tacked on".

This is definitely not "tacked on"

So rotating experiences means we'll gain/lose maps along the way?
They mention rotating featured modes for easier Portal matchmaking. Otherwise they mention map rotation options and they mean adding maps to your server rotation.

Don't think they are removing any maps. Only adding more over time.

They really figured out how to sell old maps instead of having to make more new maps, also the "X maps included" will be padded out by Portal maps that some player will probably never see.

They will be adding more maps to the base game (All-Out-War) and also bringing more classic maps to Portal. They've clearly stated there are 7 base game maps at launch.

Also, none of the maps cost money. None of the Portal stuff coming out will cost money either.

LOL custom servers pretty much keeps battlefield 4 alive since years.

Nice try but this will be the ultimate BF.

Just to reiterate some info for those that hate the specialist:

You can set up matches that are exactly like the "main" mode (All-Out-War), but with no specialist. You can still get experience and progression in Portal mode.

- Select from Map Defaults, Battlefield 2042, Battlefield 3, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 1942 Factions.

- Many of Battlefield 2042’s weapons unlock as you progress in rank, with many experiences in Battlefield Portal able to reward you with XP that help you level up, even when you’re not using 2042 Factions. If a player hasn’t unlocked a certain weapon that you’ve selected for use in your mode, you’ll also be required to select at least one default weapon so that new players can spawn with a weapon. All Battlefield Portal Weapons, Gadgets, and Attachments from our classic Battlefield games are otherwise unlocked from the start.

This looks awesome. I wonder if they plan to add more BFs to the mix like BF4, BF5, Hardline, etc.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they already stated they would add further games. I'm guessing BF1 next, but who knows.

My only concern is about the future of Portal in the coming years. It really feels like a game that should have been separate from 2042 and a HUB for all future games and maps.

What happens when BF6 is released a few years from now? Will they keep supporting Portal? Portal 2? I'm really really curious to know what are their plans for this mode.

I can easily see them making it a standalone game in the future.

I guess Im having a hard time explaining exactly what my doubts are about these custom servers.
The past Battlefields' custom servers from BF3 thru V, besides just choosing the gamemode itself, have only allowed a choice of hardcore/normal and map rotation. I used to run BF3 and 4 servers myself. That is not what Portal is allowing. Portal is basically asking the community to make the game from the ground up - thats what I meant by "tacked on" - probably the wrong word choice.
On paper it sounds great - but in practice its likely not going to work out how you think.

For example, for me, I would want BF3 classes only, no mini map, no 3d spotting, no hit markers, no health regen, squad leader only spotting, vehicles spawn on map only.
Can you tell me with a straight face a server with those exact, intricate settings, is going to be easy to find, and will have the players to support a 128 player server every time I log in?
I doubt it.

Battlefield's server browser just trying to find a hardcore settings match has never been easy when playing with a squad or 2. Now the options are through the roof. The game is going to be splintered something crazy.

Look I hope you guys are right - it sounds like a dream mode, but I have my reservations.

Battlefield Portal seems to be a platform for remastered classic fan favourite maps from entire Battlefield series and thanks to this we can see hownmuch has the game graphics evolved throughout series history.
Here's Battlefield 2042 vs Classic Bad Company 2 vs Battlefield 3 Early Graphics Comparison.
Enjoy!
