After watching yesterdays episode of Clownfish TV, a poppular channel that focuses on rants of pop colture, they made the argument that Playstation might be on it's last generation.

To summurise the video for the lazy ones:
  • The Playstation brand is in decline in Japan.
  • It's not just because stock shortages.
  • Japanese gamers are discouraged by:
    • The closure of Sony's Japanese studios
    • Focus on Western games
    • Increased censorship, disproportionete to othe competitiors, that seems to target more Japanese games.
  • They look for alternatives that are more lenient when it comes to censorhip, like Xbox and especially PC.
  • The Japanese market offered unique games that do wonders for the variedy of the Limbrary of each platform.
  • Steam Deck Reservations are above expectation there. That's most likelly becaue:
    • The Japanese PC Gaming scene is growing rapidly.
    • The Japanese always loved them handhelds.
  • This brings back the days of PC-98, where there was a boom of japanese PC games, and the deck just makes those portable.
  • Steam Link still sucks...
What do you people think?
Are they exagerating?
Do we see again the arogant Sony?

Why do we make threads for these awful YouTuber opinion videos?

Sony is going to be completely fine, yes they've declined in Japan popularity wise.

But worldwide they are still as popular as ever.

Op is this your video? You should be ashamed of yourself.

If true then playstation needs to do another playstation portable.

One that plays ps4 games and above, especially since 99 percent of ps5 games are still coming out for ps4.

Id be interested in one!

Because PS is in decline in Japan it could be the last Playstation? I heard many idiotic arguments but this could be the most idiotic of them.

Well they're not wrong.

Let's follow the breadcrumbs:

Sony = one of Japan's largest companies.

Therefore: PS in decline = death of Sony = death of Japan.

Now, Japan is inseparable from the rest of the world. You can't just remove it, I mean comon now.

So, death of Japan = death of the world = end of days.

Some dark times ahead, guys.

Should just be renamed to TV for Clowns.

Sony have made some shitty decisions this generation so far but they’re far from failing. Xbox has had it much worse over there for probably as much as a decade.

YouTube is full of fucking morons, this is proof.

Looking at consistent Japanese sales for Switch and how fast the PC market is increasing, it looks like Japan is ready to move on from the traditional console systems.

Not surprising in that light.

Sales are declining, the last playstation in japan...? LMAO!

PlayStation is less relevant than it ever has been in japan and it will continue to track less than PS4 and PS3 before it....that doesnt mean they wont launch the next console there.

I always knew that the censorship of anime titties and panties would be the cause of PlayStation’s downfall in the glorious motherland.

Sony's kinda dumb for not having a portable tbh, especially with all the good third party games on Android platform they could easily have on board and the PSP/Vita library they already have.

I dont think Sony cares all that much about their local market.
They are killing it literally everywhere else.
And even Japanese games on Playstation are still doing well enough without the PS5 being king of the hill in Japan.

How dramatic, in reality PS5 is pretty much selling all the units that they are able to send to Japan.

Sales of PlayStation consoles have been decreasing in Japan since the PS2 days, that's the reason why the market is not a priority for Sony anymore. If PC isn't a real threat to Sony in the west it sure as hell won't be in Japan.

Pretty much every japanese AAA publisher is focusing more on western/global sales than local sales these days. Japan has gone fully portable and making another PSP to compete with nintendo is out of the question.

If Nintendo ever decides to go wacky again and their next ‘console’ is another failure than the japanese market are the ones that will suffer as there wont be an alternative besides mobile

The type of casual audience that Nintendo gobbled up would rather play a shitty “AAA” cellphone mobile game than play Ragnarok on a portable device. It would make no sense for Sony to split their dev teams up again to work on portable games.

They have no idea what are they talking about. Right now PlayStation is the most successful console maker. They don't only have the best numbers worldwide, they have the best numbers of any console maker in gaming history.

We don't have Steam Deck numbers but it's fair to assume it should be a niche product worldwide. In Japan they love portables so might work well there, but compared to the worldwide PS numbers it shoudl be a joke.

Japan is only a small percentage of the worldwide gaming market, and has a different behavior form the rest of the markets. It isn't representative of the worldwide market.

If Sony doesn't sell more consoles in Japan (and in the rest of the world) isn't due to low demand: it's because they can't manufacture more due to global chips shortage issue that doesn't depend on them. PS5 demand and engagement numbers are record ones, so as soon as they solve the manufacturing issues their sales should skyrocket pretty likely beating all records in console gaming history.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Well yah...this is what I have been saying. Switch and PC (and Xbox to an extend) ends up getting benefit with Sony's Bailing from Japan.

Switch for the portability, PC for the AAA games and Steam Deck for both.

The world according to Japan and all but Sony will ok worldwide. They do want to continue to support clearly but more importantly, PC needs all the exposure it can get.

The last thing that i would want is Sony spreading their talent between a portable device and a home console. O even worse...a hybrid like the Switch with crappy specs.

Don't worry. After the back-to-back defeats by Nintendo's handhelds, safe to say Sony has learnt their lesson and isn't going to touch portable device ever again.

Sony has certainly neglected Japan, PS3 was last time Playstation was truly a major platform there.

The process of Playstation becoming an American games console with US studios that serve that market was not accidental, Sony decided that being all in on that NA market was worth more than still being a Japanese focused system.

Whether that was the right decision to make only time will tell, I don't think its a good idea to be in the same basket as xbox bound heavily to the USA market.

As for Steam Deck it has an opening for sure in Japan, more Japanese games come to Steam than ever before, censorship on Steam is far less than the Playstation/Xbox. Valve certainly made a big splash at Toyko games show but again only time will tell if they can carve out a corner of the market that Nintendo rules over.

It's not a rocket science to say that PlayStation brand is on decline in Japan
They literally sold less and less consoles in each gen after PS2
