Superman had better find out the answer real quick, because an army of subterranean monsters is approaching the surface... and Metropolis!
+Green Lantern/Red Lanterns #28 by Robert Venditti and Billy Tan (Feb 5). Green and red combine this month, for a special flip-issue! +The Fuse #1 by Antony Johnston and Justin Greenwood (Feb 12). Homicide investigations can be rough on the people involved, especially the investigators themselves. Murder in mystery, in the vacuum of space!
+The Mercenary Sea #1 by Kel Symons and Mathew Reynolds (Feb 12). The year is 1938, Japan has invaded China, and Europe is about to erupt in war. Adventure awaits, on and under the sea!
+Rat Queens #5 by Kurtis J. Wiebe and Roc Upchurch (Feb 12). Palisade isn't exactly "the happiest place on Earth," even under the best of circumstances. And things are about to get even worse; the Drowned Sorrows, famous booze transport for the city, has sunk to the bottom of the channel. Get ready for Armageddon.
+Undertow #1 by Steve Orlando and Artyom Trakhanov (Feb 19). The kingdom of Atlantis is a global power; its oppressive rule, absolute. Yet there are those who would challenge the system, and yearn to break free to live their lives on land. Redum is such a man, and his search for the fabled "Amphibian" could be the key to making that dream a reality.
+Black Science #4 by Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera (Feb 26). They've survived electro-amphibian men and techno Indians, but can Grant McKay and his team of dimension-lost adventurers survive... a resort hotel? 1ST PLACE WINNER:
Deadly Class #1; written by Rick Remender; pencils by Wes Craig; colors by Lee Loughridge; published by Image Comics (26 ponts)

2ND PLACE FINISHER:
Rat Queens #4; written by Kurtis J. Wiebe; pencils and colors by Roc Upchurch; published by Image Comics (20 points)

3RD PLACE FINISHER:
Uncanny Avengers #18; written by Rick Remender; pencils by Steve McNiven; colors by Laura Martin; published by Marvel Comics (18 points)

Here's How It Works
In the last week of the month (or earlier, if you're confident about your choices), any GAF member can send me a private message with their personal picks for the three best single issues released that month, from any publisher. These picks should be arranged in order of rank -- first, second, and third place -- and each ranking will be worth a specific point value. A first place ranking for a comic is worth 5 points; a second place is worth 3 points; a third place, 2 points. Then before next month's COMICS! OT goes live, I'll tally the results and point values from each ballot, and post the top three overall winners in the next OP as last month's, GAF-approved, best of the best. Then, maybe at the end of the year, we'll have a showdown between the year's top finishers or something similar.

A Sample Ballot
This is an example of how a sample ballot submitted by you might look. You don't have to use this formatting but I do ask that, however you send it to me, you are CLEAR on which comics you are voting for and in what order they are ranked.

Average GAF Member said:
1st Place: "Super-Fun Team Adventures" #14 (Mystery Comics; story by Jack Johnson, art by John Jackson) [worth 5 points.]
2nd Place: "Children's Bedtime Stories, Only With Nudity and Cursing" #69 (Happy Puppy Publishing; story by Jane Doe, art by John Doelner) [worth 3 points.]
3rd Place: "Grimdark, Extreme, and McDarkerson" #474 (Amazing Comics; story & art by Smitty Smithengen) [worth 2 points.]

The Voting Rules
1. Only single issues released that month are to be considered for voting; no trade collections, and no "just caught up" considerations for issues released one/two/however many months ago. Sorry if this excludes you from the voting process, trade-only readers and mail-order folk. I didn't see any other way.
2. Each GAF member is allowed one ballot, and once that ballot has been cast you are done for the month. If an issue comes out and you think it's the best comic you've ever read or will ever read, but you already cast your vote the week before, that's too bad. In other words, there are no take-backs so VOTE THOUGHTFULLY.
3. Three comics per ballot, and no more. You could send me a list of the ten best comics that month, with full paragraph summaries on why you ranked them in what order; but in the end, I'm only going to tally points for the top three and ignore the rest. You CAN pick just one book as the best that month... but that one vote is still worth only 5 points.
4. No ties on the ballots, please. You have to pick three comics as the best that month, and you have to rank them "1st, 2nd, 3rd" so that I can assign points to each. If you're torn between two issues of two different series as the best that month, and you can't decide which one you loved more than the other, TRY.
5. To make things a bit easier on me when it comes to making the OP, I'm establishing a deadline for casting ballots of 11pm Eastern Standard Time on the last day of the month. You can cast your ballot at any time during the month that you wish; however once that deadline has passed, any ballots sent to me will be ignored.
6. Again, to make things easier I would prefer that your votes be cast via private message sent to me, rather than through an open post in the OT. In addition to keeping the voting process a secret, using the PM method means I won't have to search through thread pages for someone's vote posted as an afterthought to an unrelated discussion.

Failure to comply with any of the above rules MAY result in your ballot getting thrown out.

Other rules and stipulations may follow, but for now we'll roll with these for the first round and see how it goes. Have fun voting!

Spoilers. In the age of digital comics, they are increasingly becoming an issue in these threads, as the drive to be first to discuss the week's releases overrides common sense and good posting etiquette. So over the coming weeks and months, the members of Comic GAF will be collaborating on and will eventually be implementing a system of general rules for avoiding spoilers on new comics in the Comics OT thread. But for now, please abide by the temporary guidelines outlined below. And remember, you are being watched and judged by your peers.

1. Discussion of newly released comics that involves specific plot details shall be accompanied at all times by the appropriate use of the
tag function.
2. Direct posting of full-page images from newly released comics using the tags is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
3. Direct posting of images or spoilers from comics that have yet to be released is strictly prohibited, and outgoing links to such should be accompanied by the appropriate spoiler warnings.
4. Covers, solicitation copy, and/or promotional materials shall not be considered spoilers and are allowed, unless their content involves specific plot details; in those cases, outgoing links with spoiler warnings should be used.
5. The unmarked posting of spoilers related to comics will be allowed after a period of one week (Wednesday to Wednesday) from that comic's release. (NOTE: Longer? -Spike)
6. Members of Comic GAF are expected at all times to exercise common sense and polite discretion as a matter of courtesy to fellow posters. I know, tough one.
7. If you are unsure of whether or not posting something would constitute a spoiler, err on the side of caution and use the
tags.

In short, don't be Stephanie Brown. Don't be... The Spoiler. For one thing, you're not that loveable. >:|

Happy reading!

I'm really interested in seeing how people react to ms. Marvel.

Next couple of weeks of marvel releases are going to be fun.

Yaaaay, new OT. Copying this voer from the old thread sicne it'll likely be missed by most, I thought it was cool, just because Kot is enchanting

- - - - - - - - - -

Ales Kot discussing his favourite spies in the MU. This fucking guy. Why is this not the roster for his secret avengers book haha? I literally love the way Kot speaks, I can't get enough of his interviews and stuff.

Barnes, Fury, Mystique, Black Widow, & the chameleon.
I would read. Also Kot has his sights set on Bucky, just a matter of when.

Repost from other thread.

I read Deadly Class #1. It was aight. I really liked the action sequences but the story was average. I do have a question: Why did the girl
freak out after killing a dude a few panels after she put a foot through a speeding car's windshield, into a dudes face? I mean, that dude is probably dead too. And she is a trained Assassin.

I really feel that the top three comics vote needs to be rethought. Our group is so skewed towards indie and Marvel contrary to the actual breakdown of the market, that outside of edge cases like Harley, there just isn't enough of a DC reader presence to see any of its books win.

Should be top three by publisher.

@ Messi : DC and Marvel are usually very close in numbers and Image is way below them both, but you wouldn't believe that based on those pull list rankings we did, etc.

But if a DC book is good enough it rises to the top (see harley). This is the top books of our community not the wider world. If dc are not making books people don't want to vote for then there is not much we can do. Voting by publisher devalues the victory for the top books.

That said. I tend to enjoy my dc books more than Marvel. Image does the best stuff though.

Is the neogaf top three of the month really supposed to reflect the market though? It's just supposed to be the folk is here's favourite book of the month. If there isn't enough of a DC reader presence, it will never be the favourite book, and thus never deserve to be number one. Just the way I see it anyway man, I see your point, I just think the idea that it's skewed a certain way is the point. It's effectively a battle of everyone's favourites ha.

Got my next round of books in the mail today. Thor, God of Thunder volume 1 and 2, and Thanos Rising, all by Jason Aaron. So far I've read the first three issues of Thor and the first issue of Thanos, and jeez, I think I'm in love guys.

I know the Thanos book got a lot of shtick for various reasons, much of them to do with the character's previous characterisations and how people expect/want him to be portrayed. This is the first time I've ever really read much of him though, so as an origin story for a vilain who will effectively be brand new to me in Infinity, it's off to a brilliant start. I love the art, Aaron sets up some interesting plot threads and questions and jesus, it's a pretty creepy book in general. Thanos' mother, his sketches, the lizards in the caves, the book has a real forboding sense of creeping dread, and I get the feeling I haven't seen anything yet. I know some people don't like Bianchi, but it's pretty perfect for this kind of book, imo. The world feels super detailed, I like the clothing designs for everyone, and detail on Thanos' weird face, I'm pleased.

Thor, whaaaaat. Absolutely epic. Every era is entertaining and intriguing, the plot is super engaging. Aaron uses a lot of internal monologue and while it bothers me with someone like Remender, none of this feels redundant, he has Thor's voice and language down without sounding cheesey, his character insights are great, it's just brilliant. Again the art. Esad Ribic just kills the book.

Yea, very pleased with these purchases. In general I've been pleased with all the marvel purchases I got over the last week or so. Both the Aaron stuff, the Hickman Avengers/New Avengers stuff, all really really good, brilliant quality book physically. I'm not a big fan of Marvel's 5 issue trade policy these days, but putting in a digital code for all of these and making sure the hardcovers a great quality definitely help a bit. I would still say that it was worth waiting on the HC prices settling a little post release before buying, just because of the lengths of these books, but great content, really good comics. Pretty much the only disappointment is Secret Avengers, it's not terrible, nor is it great.

Not sure where I'll go from here. Maybe that'll be it for me for marvel books for now. I've looked at Bendis' x-men stuff, but there's a lot of mixed feeling about that. Everyone seems super positive on Remender's stuff but I think I'm maybe just too far at the other end of the spectrum on his writing to reconcile it to be worth getting Uncanny Avengers. I did try those two issues, 6 & 7, but I just hate the melodramatic third person narration, it doesn't work for me at all. Instead of lettings the art and action speak for itself, Remender is too desperate to tell me like it's a novel that Thor can't take another blow from Apocalypse or whatever. Exactly the problem I remember from the first arc with the skull attack. I'm definitely on Avengers/New Avengers and Thor for good though until the creative teams change, Hickman and Aaron are just fantastic here.

I honestly don't remember the scene. I remember reading the issue and nothing really jumped out as a big plot hole. I thought it was a really good first issue.

Kickass OP!

I keep on forgetting Tomb Raider exists, but man, the art is not selling me on it at all.

Psyched for Ms.Marvel and Superior Spider-Man (of course), but I'll check out Wolverine to see more of Stegman's art.

It's when the girl
sliced the dude with the sword. I thought they were Assassin's? She seems to understand all the rules or whatever (I. E. The vouching) and they all seemed to be a well honed team and she had just put a foot so hard through a speeding car's windshield and into a dudes face. She appears to break down and it seems really out of place

NONE of my picks made it to the top 3, so, I'm gonna spend a whole month pretending I have better taste than y'all. By the way, the correct picks were :

THIRD - X-Men Legacy #23
SECOND - Saga #18
FIRST - FF #16

Saga definitely pulled me back on board. I'm glad for the
time jump.

One question, why didn't Alana 's

You'll never see the top three list again! I didn't vote this cycle because i don't get my comics on time (dcbs) and the few i did read that were from the month weren't enough to vote on, but Deadly Class #1 was the best i read. This arc of Uncanny Avengers has been amazing, and i'm getting the Rat Queen vol 1 trade, so that top 3 doesn't seem bad to me. I think the bias for voting is in mundane cape books that are okay/good but don't stand out, things people enjoy reading but wouldn't say is the best issue of the month.

I know I like generally disliked gaf books. I follow female characters in DC so I get hurt monthly.

But I did have one book in the top 3.

Is night of the living Deadpool any good?
I'm relatively new to comics and haven't read many Deadpool trades.

Go from volume 2 of the current Deadpool arc. Its been really good after a Meh first arc. The good the bad and the ugly was fantastic.

I have it on my list to go next. That and birds of prey.

It's definitely hit or miss in some areas. I feel like Levitz tip toed around the DCU playground too much. They felt disconnected. But they've consistently had a great interplay between the two. I'd really suggest checking out the Annual, it's probably the best it's been, imo.
