The Copa América Centenario is an international men's association football tournament to be held in the United States in June 2016. The competition is a celebration of the centenary of CONMEBOL and the Copa América, and is to be the first Copa América hosted outside of South America.

The tournament will be the 45th edition of Copa América since its inception in 1916 and will be held as part of an agreement between CONMEBOL (the South American football confederation) and CONCACAF (the football confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean). It will feature an expanded field of 16 teams with all ten CONMEBOL members being joined by six CONCACAF teams.

VENUES

In May 2014, it was announced that the tournament would be held in the United States. This arrangement was placed in doubt, however, after several high profile sports executive arrests were made with some of the allegations involving the media rights for the Copa América. Eventually, ties were cut with those indicted and it was announced that the tournament would proceed as planned in the United States.

Argentina are renowned for their attacking prowess and defensive discipline but they haven’t lifted a major trophy since their triumph at Copa America 1993. La Albiceleste has come agonizingly close to ending that run recently, finishing in second place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and three of the last four Copa America tournaments. Despite recent setbacks, the South American giants are still consistent favorites in any tournament they enter because of their proud and decorated history.

Bolivia has gone through some tough times in the ensuing years since their second-place finish at Copa America 1997. La Verde gave the nation some reason for optimism at last year’s Copa America, where they drew 0-0 with Mexico before defeating Ecuador 3-2, achieving their first win in the tournament for 18 years. Bolivia finds another challenge ahead, as they tackle Copa America Centenario.

Brazil are one of the most decorated teams in world soccer with a reputation that speaks for itself. But the Seleção have failed to advance past the quarterfinals of the last two tournaments, after winning four titles between 1997-2007. Under the direction of Dunga, who won Copa America twice as a player and led Brazil to its last triumph in 2007, Brazil will look to improve upon their recent performances by winning the historic Copa America Centenario.

Jamaica took positives from their first turn at Copa America last year in Chile despite going out in the group stage. The run in South America set the Reggae Boyz up for some unprecedented success later in the summer when they knocked off the United States in the semifinals of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup before finishing second place behind Mexico. With those experiences under their belt, the Caribbean side led by Winfried Schaefer should enter Copa America Centenario with full confidence.

Mexico is a frequent guest at Copa America and have participated in every Copa America since 1993. They achieved sustained success in South America and advanced from the group stage in eight of nine tournaments. Though they failed to advance at Copa America 2015, El Tri has finished in the top three five times and as runner-up twice. This summer Mexico enters the tournament as the reigning regional champions of CONCACAF and are armed for another customary deep tournament run this year.

I'm hype as hell for this. Got an extra ticket for the Haiti v. Peru game in Seattle on the 4th that I'm trying to get rid of, for face value or even slightly below. Anyone want it? Section 119 Row K, I believe.

Subbed! Great OP! Hoping Nagbe gets some starts!
Seriously. I feel like so many USA fans have been fetishizing Nagbe in the middle of the field in a 433 with Bradley as a defensive midfielder, and when we finally saw it we looked soooooooo much better than the first half.

I still see ads with Neymar's name and photo.

Suarez isn't gonna play against us, so maybe we can top the group.
Actually Suarez might not play at all, but I haven't kept up since he got injured.

Last I heard is he should be available to play during the knockout rounds.

Reminder for everyone.

This is a special edition of Copa America, Chile is still the team that goes to Confederations Cup and they will still be the defending champions for 2019.

Yes, winner only gets recognition for winning the Centenario Cup, just that.

And another thing with Chile, the ANFP wanted to send a B team for this cup so the players can rest and prepare for the Russia WC qualifiers, but the main players from the National team wanted to go to give it a shot.

I know a lot more goes into Brazil's squad selection than how good the players actually are and how they fit into the team, but I still think it's crazy Firmino isn't in the team.

I look forward to the US looking completely uninspired and then rabid defenses on Deadspin and other sites of how the team failing to be competent is actually proof of how important it is for Klinny to be in charge.

Is Canada not good enough?

Not nearly. FIFA rankings are silly, but they are ranked right between St. Kitts & Nevis and El Salvador as far as CONCACAF teams go. Zero goals and zero wins at the 2015 Gold Cup, which helped determine which CONCACAF teams would participate.

I had no idea Neymar wouldn't be at the Copa. I was sure the OP had somehow overlooked him. Brazil's chances must take a mighty knock because of that. I wonder if Argentina will finally win something or if they will continue to flatter to deceive.

Brazil plays better without him now.

I posted a video the other day of a New York radio sports host not knowing anything about the tournament and reading the (wrong) article about it on Wikipedia on air. Is he the exception or do the majority of sports shows in USA not know about the tournament?

I assume you're talking about Francesa, and he just says shit like that to rile people up. Highly entertaining show tbh.

That's Mike Francesa. He's a moron but, above all, loathes soccer. For example, Sports Illustrated put Messi on the cover and he went into a huge rant about it, complaining that they spent 11 pages talking about the Copa America. How dare they.

Enough about him. Can't wait for this to start next week!

Most top sports radio shows in the US do not cover soccer. Your best bet are a handful of podcasts such as Men in Blazers.
