Cowboy Bebop | Official Teaser “Lost Session” | Netflix

For the first 10 or so minutes, I was actually rather impressed by the cinematography - there's clearly some care that went into the composition of the shots. But then the seams start to show: poor fight choreography (probably due to John Cho's age), the sets look kinda cheap, the main actors are miscast (isn't Spike supposed to be in his late 20's?), and the changes to the story are questionable so far (why force Faye into the group so quickly and clumsily?).

After watching the first episode I decided to rewatch the anime's first episode since I haven't watched it in like 10 years and, to no one's surprise, it's SO much better. So yeah, now I'm rewatching the rest of the anime instead of the live action series. Thanks Netflix :)

The cheapness shows, yeah. Honestly it seems like as good of an effort anyone could have reasonably expected. Unfortunately trying to make live action anime adaptations minus the cringe factor remains a difficult task to begin with.

You can, but for the most part you need to extensively alter and tone down stuff.
At which point fans will get butt hurt, and if you don't have the fans on board you have to question if it's even worth making an adaptation.

So just don't adapt anime, or pick stuff that would actually translate to live action. Like, say, Monster

2 episodes in, it’s kinda growing on me seeing it as its own thing. It’s not trying to be a 1:1 remake and I can appreciate the changes. A lot of it is fairly cringe but it manages to hit more often than not.

Middling praise is a far cry from the OG but for what it is, not half bad

I am strangley hooked, so that is something. Do I like it, or can I not look away. Does it matter?

We have a real cowboy bebop, and this. Jets good in it. I like that for sure. Don't mind faye either, just a few clunkers.

It....it just doesn't work man, there's things that are meant to be animated and they just don't work in live action.

Haven't actually physically cringed because of something in a TV show/movie in a long time...but this:

My main gripe is their location choices just don’t jive with everything else and feel cheep. Some of their sets like the casino at the beginning or the Bebop look great and you can tell they put in time and effort, but as soon as they head planet-side it’s like they suddenly ran out of money for sets and props and just said ‘fuck it we’ll shoot the rest of it at the cheapest spot we can find’ which tends to be random industrial/construction sites and ordinary houses and it just sticks out like a sore thumb against the effects.

It’s like taking a Dr Who episode from the 70’s with their terrible sets and obvious locations and remastering it with top notch CG effects from ILM. It just doesn’t fit.

on Episode Three while not on the same level and the animated series, I am really enjoying this so far.

I don't want a complete 1 to 1 shot for shot remake.
hopefully, this will get a few seasons.

yeah, it can look cheap at times but it's enjoyable. screw the negative reception (until I see all ten eps then I might change my mind)

...yeah, that's all I need to know. As soon as the showrunners of an adaptation talk about "updating" the women, you know to skip it. There's not a chance in hell that I'd waste my time now, only to see Faye go from an interesting character in the original to some empty "strong" female character in the boring ways now considered acceptable.

Pretty bad. I couldn't even make it through the first episode. Awful dialogue. Bad acting from most of the cast. Crap. Its a pimple on the ass of the source material.

Didn't even finish the first episode yet. Dunno if I wanna even keep going.

Joss Wheedon scripting school strikes again. Everything has to be funny and it has MULTIPLE hints for the audience to understand what's going to happen or how to feel. There's no subtlety.

My wife and I liked the first episode so far. We also liked the anime. I think the instead of being so critical of the Live Action, think of it as a hommage. I think the change to Faye's character is only interrupting to those who have watched the anime. Granted we have only watched the first episode so well see how it goes.

Joss Whedon ruined movie scripts and writing. I firmly believe he's responsible for dumbing everything down.

Finished this shitty show.

Another woke feminazi crappy show

The only good thing was Jett

Also my god
Ed at the very end is horrible

I feel like there's a bunch of haters....not sure what you're really expecting.

If I had to describe my first 10 minute experience I'd say this is literally what I'd expect a live action Cowboy Bebop to be and I was highly impressed from the visuals to the audio to the intro, it made me feel like I was starting an episode of the Anime.

Another word for Anime is Cartoon. Anybody that bent on a fucking cartoon has their own personal issues, I loved the cartoon and I enjoyed the live action show.

My fantasy is that my girlfriend was actually a young high school girl.
So the film had 2 directors, 5 eps each. I'm guessing the second director took over at ep 6 right about when the show changed pace and in my and my gfs opinion it also got worse. I wish they stuck to the first director as his work was much closer to the spirit of the original.

Loved the first 5 eps, last 5 were disappointing.

While I’m nowhere near as critical of the live action as most seem to be, c’mon son.

well, the best i can say about it is that was not great. lol and thats the best i can say.

things i liked

faye - surprisingly. i thought i wanst goig to hate her but she made me laugh. the first "oh hi, FUCK YOU!" made me lol. she is not the faye valentine from th OG, but she has some of fayes spirit in this adaption, and she made me laugh a lot. i liked her for what she was

jet - the actor did a great job. he was the most accurate portrayal on the show, and his acting, although no great, was very consistent with the noir theme of the show. he was awesome.

ein - because he is so stinkin cute

the music - phenomenal soundtrack with sooooo much jazz. i loved it. great job by yoko kanno and the seatbelts, and everyone else involved.

the sets, costumes, ships, location, etc - great job on all this, i thought. from the bebop, to the ships, to how warp gates and planets looked. so much about this they absolutely nailed, even if it had a bit of a cartoony look.

digging into spike, vicious and julias past - although horribly written and acted, i really like how they attempted ot flesh out the back story between them. although part of the OG Bebops allure is the mystery, i always wondered what there past would look like more examined, and it appears the writers did their research as it was almost exactly like i would have imagined it would be.

things i did not like

the acting - most of the acting was somewhere between par and below average. there were no stand out actors. and at times it was just down right bad acting. not much else to say. it got really, really bad in some pisodes. and i couldnt even write it off as them trying to make it feel noir and old school. it was just really, really poorly acted.

the script - i think this is partly why the actors were delivering lines so bad: because the lines were bad. there are some thigns that were okay, other things that were great, but the lines they fed these guys in some scenes were just B level movie bad (or worse... c level movie?)

julia in the final episode - they changed and swapped a few events around, which i was totally okay with. and as i said liked that they dug into the ast, but making julia the bad guy at the end is a bad, head scratching move.

ed - it was so bad

the cinematography and the way things were shot

the fight scenes - i think this comes down to the way it was shot and editing. i feel the actors and choreographers did their job, but the editing and the way its shot just doesnt slap like it should.

and more...

there are parts of this i love, and parts of it that i think is some really, really bad television. so im gonna have to chalk this one up as a failure, but nice try, and in the end there are certain scenes and episodes that i genuinely, really enjoyed, but it wasnt enough to make it "good" and definitely not great.

Finished Epiosde 1

The world feels hollow, where are all the people! There was no setup for the Casino scene! Straight to action which is bad too! How is Spike grabbing gun barrels of rifles after it’s been shot or being shot, ugh my hands thinking about it.

Tijuana, again where are all the people! Just the Bar and last scene with couple escape area? (Won’t mention it since maybe spoilers for new viewers)

Spike vs Faye fight was laughably bad there are slow mo action of a fight that

Tijuana modeled after 70/80s era? With Camaro gas car?

Baffling this show it doesn’t look/feel futuristic! World doesn’t feel as lively, for role complaining Bout Breath of the Wilds emptiness well this first episode feels worst than that! Lol

Jet and Spike convo don’t seem natural, I didn’t feel the chemistry, I actually liked individual performance of Jet and Spike. Faye can’t say it’s bad but just not for me!

There’s no Beef? In Bell Peppers and Beef…..disappointed…
