Dragon Quest XII - Darker than the bat

Apparentlt DQ 12 is going to be a bit darker then previous ones and have some Life choosing system.

from here:

"
Square Enix Co. announced the release of the latest installment in the popular "Dragon Quest" role-playing video game series, which will be called "Dragon Quest XII: Erabareshi Unmei no Honoo" (the flames of fate).

The company has yet to reveal a release date or the gaming platforms, but it aims for a worldwide release, it said on May 27.

The news was announced during an online event commemorating the 35th anniversary of the first "Dragon Quest," or "Dragon Warrior" in North America, which was released on May 27, 1986.

"The latest edition has a dark tone to it. It is a 'Dragon Quest' for adults," said series creator Yuji Horii. "During the course of the scenario, the player is forced to make many choices and must choose how to live their life."

The gameplay will also change.

"The command battle system will be renewed," he added.

The video game series has sold more than 82 million units. "Dragon Quest XI," which was released in July 2017, sold more than 6.5 million units."

A dark tone... Will the MC constantly talk about chaos? I feel like Square-Enix has been trying to break into the west in all the wrong ways after the success of shadowbringers.

If you can't give these developers a bit of faith even after the resounding success that was Dragon Quest XI, I don't know what to tell you.

Having a new perspective on the story is not a bad thing, actually with the style of this series it could be extremely interesting.

But this is Neogaf and people must complain about death of new ideas and introduction of new ideas at the same time.

I like innovation and stuff but......

Just give me my regular goofy Dragon Quest formula: A political nobody who never left his village goes on a life changing journey from big cities to cursed forests/dungeons, snowy mountains, a town with a casino and meeting even more goofy characters while doing it. Only to learn to everybody's shock that he is actually the chosen one to save the world from An unstoppable evil which can not be defeated unless you find a dozen of Kong metal slimes.

DQ will always be DQ at least in the mainline games so if you've enjoyed past DQ games it's fair to say you'll enjoy the next one, a change in the turn based battle system isn't as significant as going from TB to Action for example, and this is DQ it's going to be traditional for better or worst so as not to upset the HUGE base market in Japan.

Speaking of dark tone, VII and VIII HAD dark tones, it's just wasn't explored enough.

After the BS they pulled with DQ XI Definitive Edition being based on the Switch port, they need to garner some good will. That was a totally unnecessary move and made zero sense whatsoever.

I really enjoyed DQ XI but is sure did fizzle out with the story.

And by that time I didn’t have much motivation to continue after I beat the final boss which was a cake walk.

Didn’t have any sort of strategy or challenge.

Act 3 story was such bullshit and it just felt cheap

you should try it with all Draconian restrictions though.

Yeah I enjoyed the game but without some of the "Draconian Quest" settings the difficulty is a joke.
Also the second half of the game is like JRPG padding 101

How wild. I'm actually returning to the Dragon Quest series for the first time since it was Dragon Warrior on the NES. My last Dragon Quest game was actually Dragon Warrior 3. But I'm looking at getting Dragon Quest XI.

Them putting emphasis on "adult" is a big red flag.

Another clear sign that Square-Enix has lost touch with what made them great and just want to appeal to western value$ now.
Everything must be edgy, have multiple choices, have realtime action combat, and so on.

Bet the protag will still be male, rather than a hot ass anime chick. Would like to be wrong.
Also, Dragon Quest 8 HD when?

That’s okay I’ll lighten the mood by again naming the hero “my wiener”, then half the dialog is people talking about their wieners.

DQ XI is great, it's typical Dragon Quest stuff so if you're into that you'll probably enjoy it.

It's also recently been added to the PS+ free games, top tier maybe? That's what I subscribe to, it's the Definitive Edition too.

From most of your posts I like you dude but Square Enix is not in control of Dragon Quest - Armor Project is - in other words Horii is. SE just have the exclusive publishing rights. This thread can do without your hot take$ based on fallacies because Square Enix fucked your current GF or whatever reason they have your panties in a twist.

I just want the franchise to evolve a bit. There is a difference between having nostalgic elements and relying on it entirely. Dragon Quest's gameplay never evolved from the bare basics of turn based combat. It could do with a little bit more depth or strategy in its combat system.

The thing is, Horii is a dying man. He's probably not going to be around 10 years from now.

Based on some interviews, Square-Enix wants the series to "evolve", and the changes they make now may reflect on future entries of the franchise.
Nothing wrong with making some changes here and there, the problem is making changes where there's no need to (i.e. combat, tone).

I'm ok with spin-offs for radical changes.

Ask yourself, who's gonna take the helm when Horii is not around anymore? I wouldn't be surprised if Square-Enix takes over the franchise somehow.

I'm going to be getting it on the Nintendo Switch.

I know the games do tend to be light-hearted and cartoony which is something I sort of need now especially since I'm literally caring for my father who only has a matter of a day or two to live and I'm going to need something to keep my mind positively occupied.

Edit: I read that the Nintendo Switch version is the Definitive Edition as well.

Sorry to hear that dude, my father passed when I was in middle school, I know what it's like. Glad you can be there for him, cherish those memories! Ocarina of Time, and Albert Odyssey on the Saturn were my escape while he was sick.

I'm really sorry to hear that and I hope you never have to experience that again. G-d bless you my friend.

Why does like every game ever nowadays have to be '' dark ''?...
I feel like the industry is so completely oversaturated with it, what I wouldn't do for a big AAA title with the tone of Bayonetta.

Meh, i liked the style of the movie. Toriyamas designs are so samey looking after a while…it’s getting boring. I know his stuff is synonymous with DQ but it seems like his stuff for Chrono Trigger was his peak

Its like, will the next protagonist have a bowl cut like trunks or spikey hair like Gohan. I feel like theres like 8 different options for hair and each piece of clothing and he just randomly generates them at this point.

I look forward to how they go about handling the music now that the composer is dead. Hopefully it improves.

DXII is gonna be a significant departure from the series. The composer is gone, its going for a more mature-darker story, new battle system, etc.

I have a feeling peopel are gonna lose their minds

Dark is cool now huh? I remember back with pop warrior within everybody hated the 'edginess' or whatever. Normies are always 10 years late to the party.

I hope they totally revamp the battle system and ditch the boring turn based battles. And I hope all the boomer turn based purists have an absolute meltdown and swear this is the end of the series, only for it to become a massive worldwide hit.

Same.

And yeah people will absolutely meltdown once they do it. You think its bad for Final Fantasy wait until they dare change a hair on precious Dragon Quest’s head

Lets be honest turn based was just a placeholder until technology was better....with the exception of turn based with a heavy emphasis on strategic thinking. I havnt seen any really good turn based replacement for playing as a party though. CPU controlled party members dont really cut it for me.

If this game stays somewhat turn based but an emphasis on battles being straegic..then thats great. I sneeze my way through the fights in dq11...even though i love the game for story reasons.
Some boss battles were fun when i entered them without fully resting first. Also zoom and camps made things so easy.

Really who wants to have long strategy battles through endless random enemies though just to grind? Maybe the solution is action rpg until you fight bosses and then it becomes turn based.

Yeah I think the “enemies stand on one side, you stand on the other, and you take turns hitting each other” kind of battle system has pretty limited opportunities for strategy. And I wouldn’t even want every encounter to be some deep strategic affair considering you face the same groups of enemies over and over and over, and you know how it’s going to play out as soon as the battle begins.

All the FF remasters added fast forward and auto battle. They know damn well that battles are mainly about leveling up your characters and seeing all those pretty numbers get bigger and bigger.

As far as controlling multiple party members: I love the way FF XIII handled it. Control your party mainly by swapping their roles at any given moment. AI was pretty damn optimal for any given role but the key was figuring out exactly when to swap. Plus they give you bonuses for “winning with style” instead of just cheesing it. I honestly found XIII to be way more strategic, challenging, and rewarding than any traditional turn based JRPG I’ve played (and I’ve played tons of them).
