Dune | Official Main Trailer

Loved it although the pacing in the last 30 was clearly slowing up to stop for part 2.

People saying the Lynch version is superior blows my mind.

Denis is my favorite current director, and the movie has a lot to recommend it.

That said, I almost wish I'd seen it without having read the book. Without all the context given by Herbert throughout the narrative, the story feels...empty? I don't know exactly how to describe it. Just too many missing pieces.

There must be some 'fear is the mind killer' footage on the cutting room floor.

Good companion to the book in that it’s all show and no tell, but you’re really getting 1% of the experience here if you haven’t also read it.

If you haven’t, you really should.
It's a dense book with so much of the story told through the character's thought voice. That doesn't translate well to film. Lynch tried it and we all know how that turned out. Amazing film in my opinion all told.

Only problem I had with Dune was/is… I can’t stomach the Netflix, Marvel crap etc anymore.
A good movie like this resets my internal quality threshold.
Until it’s dragged down again by all the shit I get to see because quality is rare these days.

It‘s pacing (abrupt ending) is going to make a lot more sense when part II comes out. I’m the book what comes next is rather slow moving too, so it made no sense to end with some more epic stuff, ending sooner would also be kinda bad.

I have a lot of respect for Denis especially after Blade Runner but this one left me a bit empty. It wasn't boring but the story felt lacking and I think the unfortunate fact that Dune is so influential and the predecessor to so many other sci-fi films and stories just made this simplified version seem totally unoriginal.

I don't really get the criticism about the abrupt ending. To me it was the perfect spot to end. It's a turning point in the story, literally about the halfway point of the original book, and the main character overcomes a close call and demonstrates some personal growth. Legit the only criticism that makes sense to me is “but Zendaya JUST showed up”, to which I say blame the marketing, not the story.

Hipsters.

'Oh? You like this now popular IP from deeps in the scfi realm? I've been here since the David Lynch days....you probably haven't heard about it. "

Has to be it. I don’t think the Lynch film was any good then let alone now. I rewatched a couple of days ago and it feels like they can’t even enter a scene without a narrator exposition dump explaining who/what you’re about to see and why you’re about to see it.

It's truly shit. Even divorcing it from the source material it doesn't work well at all. The longer cut is slightly better but still a mess.

Yeah, that Sardaukar chant in the cinema was something else. You will hardly be able to replicate that feeling at home.

The Sardaukar should have brought that DJ to the battlefield Apocalypse Now style and blast it in the face of their enemies :D

Id say the whole movie is to be seen on a big screen. A lot of the scale would be lost watching on a tv. Arrakeen is MASSIVE.

Well that was utterly fucking perfect, pure cinematic glory and I watched it at home on a 55" telly ffs, gripping from start to finish and just cements Dennis as my favourite director at the moment as everyone of his films is a massive hit for me.

As much as i would've loved to see this in the cinema life and kids kept getting in the way and I just couldn't resist any longer especially knowing a perfect 4K rip is up had there not been I probably would've made more of an effort to get to the cinema so this same day cinema/home release definitely cost them a few quid as I'm sure I wasn't the only one but obviously not enough to cancel a sequel which I'll definitely catch in the cinema.

I'll order the book after I've seen the finale, don't want the cinema experience spoiled.

Depends on the cinema's setup - SD image with shitty but loud speakers plus all the noisy people around is far from optimal experience if you ask me, as oppose to UHD HDR video with good quality surround/Atmos setup at your home. The only reaspn I'm going to the cinemas for movies like this is because I want them to do good and to get a sequel, but other than that watching movies at cimenas has been vastly inferior exoerience for years, it's really hard for me to find even a single advantage.

Also a weird position of him to have considering in a 6 months people will have no choice but to watch it on a smaller screen than cinema. Is he really hinting at that he made a movie so inferior to watch at home for the 99.9% of viewers the will ever watch this movie? :goog_unsure::goog_unsure::goog_unsure:

To be fair, so very, very much will have to be cut from the second film, as it was in the first, that you won't really be spoiling yourself at all if you buy and read the novel now. Herbert's novel operates on so many different levels that a live action adaption can never hope to replicate.

I watched Dune on a 65 inch LG CX, with a 7.1 surround sound system cranked right up. There is no way I missed anything from the 'cinema experience' other than loud and annoying fucking people.

For people without good home systems, then the cinema is still a viable option, but for anyone lucky enough to have the cash to afford a great home cinema, going to an actual cinema is absolutely pointless in this day and age.

I have a similar setup I still like the theater.

I feel like it should have ended with them walking in the desert, the next movie starts with them finding the Fremen. IMO would have made way more sense.

The movie is shot to be experienced on the big screen. It's like watching porn on your phone vs on a big LG OLED. It gets the job done, but orgasm may vary.

They should have make the whole „never killed someone„ a bigger part of his character so that when it happens it’s actually important and you get a feeling of „oh shit - let’s go now“ -> see you in part 2

Eh. Agree to disagree. For all of the advantages a massive screen might bring, it is more than offset by the huge disadvantages of visiting a cinema in this day and age.

Yeah, there's a lot of "weighty" things in the movie that don't really hit home like they do in the book. IDK why they completely left out the Mentat stuff in the movie, maybe saved for part 2? Seems like there's just too much to cover for part 2 though.

I read a review that perfectly described the ending of Dune, they described it like if Fellowship ended with Sam and Frodo meeting Gollum. I've been reading the book again, I'm about 3 hours from the end, and ending part 1 before they met the Fremen just would have made way more sense. I kinda feel like the movie could have used 3 parts, split it like the book; Dune, Muadib, and The Prophet.

i gotta say that depends on the cinema, near me we have one with a great screen (no imax unfort) great sound and its all the comfy as hell recliner type seats arranged so that your view is never blocked by those in front.. heck there that comfy the wife nodded off for 20mins during the latest Bond movie ffs lol, plus anyone being a dick in a cinema over here tends to be told to fuck up by someone around them, god knows ive told a few in my time to quieten the fuck down or they'll be getting a slap

I guess they don't want to get too much into why the mentats exist and what they actually are? Poses more questions than it answers. They don't have time to get into the Butlerian Jihad, and the turning away from AI, so getting too much into mentat lore isn't much of an option, I suppose. So we get 'man have eyes that roll back into head so he can compute stuff' and that's about it. Hoping Thufir obviously
has more to do in part 2 though on Geidi Prime. We need more of the Harkonnens in general.

VR is the best way to watch most movies, you can put in noise-cancelling headphones, get cosey in bed and watch on a screen size of your choice whilst sitting on the moon. Not even joking, unless you want to go with family I'd always opt for VR over a real cinema if watching solo, all the perks, none of the cons.

saw it the other nite. Liked it a lot. Im not a fan of the original. And never read the books or anything. i went with a big group. Everyone seemed to like it except maybe 1 person. The ppl i went with that had read the books and like the original, loved it the most.

It was also the first time i seen a 3D movie. Watched it again later at home on HBO. Its like 100x more epic in the theater. At home it felt like a different movie. But not in a bad way.

Watched it on IMAX tonight. The sound design is great. The entire theater was shaking. Way better experience than the standard theater screen, and definitely much better than my LG OLED setup. I have never really tried Dolby Cinema screens since they are kind of far away from where I live and dont really have the large IMAX screens, but now im curious to see just how much better it can be compared to the IMAX surround system.

I also dont know why they cant offer a 16:9 version of the movie on HBO Max. Yes, it will crop stuff but you are cropping all the IMAX shots anyway in the 21:9 aspect ratio. All the Nolan movies look fine in bluray and 4k blurays in 16:9. Vudu's digital versions are also in widescreen for some reason and dont adjust the aspect ratio like the bluray does.

Oddly enough, BVS on vudu did get the 4:3 imax upgrade for all the IMAX scenes. So it can be done, not sure why they dont do it. I know I can just put in my 4k bluray but im too lazy to change discs every time i want to watch a scene or two.

After a third "screening" on my neighbours tv i can confirm that those who say a home cinema setup is sufficient don't want to admit they just don't want to get out to a cinema.

The dude shits money and gets the newest stuff and his setup is top grade and one could argue where the quality is but the size?
Not comparable. No. Nope. Nah. Anyone seeing the Atreides fleet land on Dune on their ~60 inch tv just saw a postcard version.

And seriously - are people really such a problem in your countries? I swear the only time i ever had heard someone being loud and obnoxious was during the midnight premiere of Revenge of the Sith. Some drunk dude was commenting what was happening on screen and he was quickly put down by other people.

I'm always more anxious about the screen/sound quality than other movie goers. I had a better time in my hometown cinema than in one of the biggest cinema plexes in Krakow.
Not only had they atmos sound, the brightness and color saturation was perfect. I could barely see the Sandworm teeth on my first watch 😐

I just saw this movie in the theater.

And i have to say it is one if the best looking sci-fi movie i have ever seen.

From the trailers i got the sense that they were white washing the franchise but i gladly stand corrected. Every personality missing in the trailers is present in the movie.

Not only with turkish/arabic words such as padishah, lisan al gaib etc. but through costume design and ost as well.

From the black burqas that members of the bene gesserit wear to desert garbs and ceremonial dresses and soldiers uniforms, costumes are fantastic.

One cannot praise hans zimmer enough but still i feel like have to say he really deliveres excellence with dune. It's amazing how he creates a middle eastern influced futuristic masterpieces for this movie. It is really something to experience.

And this is one of the finest casted movie as well. Whole cast is great but two of them deserve special praises.

Timothy chalamet as paul atreides. I mean he's pretty much born to play this role. His lean posture and elf-like features are perfect for the role and being a talented actor helps a lot too.

And stellan skarsgard as baron harkonnen. He is discusting, hedeous, monsterous and terrifying at the same time. Just as he should be.

I am pretty sure i'll double dip when it comes to apple tv. eventhough i enjoyed seeing it on a big screen, i really want to rewatch it on an oled tv with dolby vision because the color palette of this movie is so good. Bright yellowish hue of arrakis, dark blue, black and white coldness of harkonen planet... simply beautiful.

I highly recommend this movie. Go see it.

Trailers don't do it justice.

i agree with this.

first half of the book is almost entirely about world building. You only see Chani through Paul's visions.

also i'm kinda glad the movie didn't lean on the lore too much. reading lore can be fun but lore being told might get tedious especially in a movie format.

most of the plot happens in the second half of the book. also it's quite suprising that part two is coming in 2023. from Paul's visions (and some them are way in the future) i thought they've already filmed it as a whole and divided into two parts Kill Bill style.

As somebody who, going in had no attachment/bias towards or against this franchise, I gotta say on first watch I'm not the biggest fan. The whole thing felt like a preview/intro selling you on the sequel, while also explaining how the world works and the forces governing it. The information being fed was so simple (probably much more streamlined compared to the books) already, that I felt like they could've set up the plot points and compressed it into the first half of the movie, extended the length of the movie a bit in the back half to set up some kind of big payoff to get you actually amped to see the next one and invest your time into seeing it again. They were too busy setting up the story, to actually TELL the story. As someone else in the thread said LotR did it perfectly. This movie didn't clear that bar of greatness imo.

I started reading DUNE again and was amazed at how much was cut for both Lynch and Denis, interesting they they both focus on so many similar scenes. The book doesn't hide anything, there are multiple exposition dumps in conversations that basically lay out the Atreides and Harkonnen plans in exhaustive detail before anything happens.

And there is like NO action. Sheesh. I find myself filling in the technical, aesthetic, and action holes with an amalgam of the movies. Overall I think Denis is more book accurate but Lynch just has such epic emotional moments that makes it a far more satisfying watch, IMHO. Be interesting to see the back end of Denis, and I'm curious if he will reedit pt 1 to synch up with whatever he gets from pt 2. Stuff like the desert battle will need to be redone if there are costume or choreography changes once they actually have to show more of this stuff onscreen.

I hope I can do an IMAX double feature at some point.

Watching it on IMAX was pretty great but really was disappointed with the movie.

Doesn't matter, I kind of expected this with the director and was looking for a way into the books, which it did.

Hm. I'm clearly in the minority. My friends and I watched it over the weekend and were various degrees of unimpressed. I fell asleep for like 45 minutes. The consensus is that it's a movie that it doesn't spend enough time in the right places to build credible, emotional weight (and maybe that Dune in a movie format over a TV one was always a failed idea). A couple of the performances a little shaky too, but most of the movie elements are great. Costume design, sets, cinematography, shot composition. It was the screenplay that let it down.
