That’s the view of Electronic Arts‘ VP of brand, Elle McCarthy, who told Adweek that “the convergence of gaming and everything in culture” means almost everyone is now a ‘player’.

God damn this is corpo-speak down to the T. The "gamer" term is literally accurate to what you are doing.

Well nvm, just saw her Twitter feed. Typical hardcore feminist who sees oppression in everything and everyone and plays the feminist card when criticized. Such people actively harm society and businesses. EA will certainly notice that, but you can't simply fire people like that if you always act like a moral compass for marketing reasons.

I always called them "computer games", and said "I play computer games", I think thats more a British thing though. I mean it doesn't matter what you call they will still dunk your head in the toilet.

Well coincidentally I think the term "dev" or "Publisher" is outdated for companies like EA.

I think we should get on with modern times and call them Digital Whalers or DW's. Because these days they are mostly concerned about hunting whales.

Skip about the video and you'll land on the typical wording "diverse, sexual identity, minorities, social justice issues, female, non-binary, current minorities will be the majority by 2040, culture, culture, culture, incarceration"

If anyone can stomach the whole video please post.
"Are you sure this will help us sell more games?"

"Games?"

Barf! Can I just play a fucking game asshole! I don't need to have my sexuality and political leanings validated when I fire up a game. They are so lucky that Madden and Fifa are unstoppable cash machines at this point as, people like Elle here, are so fucking tone deaf it's amazing. Can't wait for the new Dead Space to feature a diverse main character with customization that includes the pride and blm flag that can be placed on the back of your helmet. Betsy Ross or Gadsden flag unavailable. Barf again!

I wanted to see how long until sexual identity or BLM popped up. I didn't spend much time waiting.

Gamers are a thing, doesn't matter what your revisionist PC nomenclature says. To be a human being who enjoys playing videogames, you are a gamer. No matter what you think should be or what is between your legs, and no matter what color it is. There. I was just more inclusive than seven thousand of your buzzword interviews.

People get their balls twisted in a bunch when gamer clearly means people that play games a bunch. You don't have to assign any more to it than that. It doesn't mean you have to have a Mt. Dew hat and a fox tail buttplug while shaking your greasy clams at the nearest jock.

Well....they got a point.

Gaming (should just be called digital interactive entertainment) is so broad now, the term no longer means exactly what it meant when this medium started.

Would be like if someone call Fast and the Furious an "informational moving picture".

Sometimes games are just games. Or at least I hope they can still be. Guess not when it comes to EA, but I don't remember the last time I bought a game interactive experience from them anyway.

I agree that some times a game is just a game, but I don't believe EA is stating they are not making such things anymore, simply that the term is much more broad now. They'll still clearly make Fifa, Madden and gamey games with points, goals, objectives, high scores etc, but what they mean is stuff like Dead Space and many experiences are simply not for the same reasons.

Buying a game from this publisher imho is irrelevant to the topic. Some times I buy a game for just that, a score, objective etc, I play tetris and Lumines for that many times, but other times I'm playing for an experience like horror or thriller or action etc and I understand (and have for a long, long time) why maybe this shouldn't be called "gaming" any longer.

I remember when PS4 first launched and I was at a friends house and I was playing Outlast (would never buy it, got it free from PS Plus btw) and as I was going thru it , their mom came in the room and was like "is it 2 player?" and or " who has the high score"....sir, this is reason enough that it might not make sense to call the WHOLE MEDIUM, something that all titles don't actually fall under and can't all fall under any longer. The time where such a thing fit the medium made sense then, it doesn't in 2021 when many people game, many genres exist have absolutely nothing to do with levels, scores, points, leader boards, competitive play etc

All we are left with is that its something digital that we interact with.

Interactive experience, digital interactive experience, interactive experience entertainment, experience experience experience aka EEE lol

Is this a video game? It's digital, interactive, and uses a screen on It's eyes to convey information. Everybody knows what a video game is. Everyone knows what a gamer is.

I think the term gamer has a negative connotation to it. We grew up being labeled nerds. Gamers were your basement dwellers. The virgins. Almost all of them boys. Now everyones husbands and boyfriends are playing Warzone. Their kids are playing fortnite. girls and boys. They themselves are playing smartphone trash. No one wants to be associated to the so-called losers.

They think they are too call to be called gamers.

Is this a video game?

Nope, but using the term game, shit you might question those walking simulators that have just as little to do in em lol

I'd say that fucking dog has more interactions and features then most of those walking simulations, yet one is called game.

Screened interactive entertainment, but shit even that can change

Soooo that term makes sense to be more broad, who knows what we'll be doing in the future in this medium.

To say computer games, not all games are only on computer, to say screened interactive entertainment, in the future, we may no longer even use screens to as an interface, shit could be brain implants for all we know.

That’s the view of Electronic Arts‘ VP of brand, Elle McCarthy, who told Adweek that “the convergence of gaming and everything in culture” means almost everyone is now a ‘player’.

“Gaming is no longer a medium or an industry, it is simply ‘interactive’. You can now interact with almost everything through play—from an interest area like interior design to a movement like Black Lives Matter or exploring your sexual identity,” she said.

EA everybody!

These are the idiots running the major gaming companies these days. No fucking wonder the industry is slowly turning to shit.

If you want to explore your sexual identity, go have a wank in your bedroom. Leave that shit out of videogames... plskthnx.

lol

I don't get it? Do people just get triggered and can't think straight?

Read carefully what is being stated man.

" You can now interact with almost everything through play—from an interest area like interior design to a movement like Black Lives Matter or exploring your sexual identity,” she said."

They are talking about interacting with things, like interior design stuff where they use 3D models, VR, AR etc Does that fucking mean they want that in "video games"? They are simply giving examples of interactions.

VR in porn exist, thats not fucking saying they want that in their video games, they are simply stressing that the concept to interacting with tech to engage with people exist beyond just "gaming". A few words have triggered some of you so badly, you basically stopped thinking and reacted to a few words lol Nothing in that article is even remotely suggesting what you are talking about man.

Funny enough, some of that shit is already in the medium and has been in the medium for years

You going to stop them or? =)

So what term should we use then?

Good question.

I don't feel I even fit that term anymore as back in the day I played a lot of competitive shit, sports game (massive basket ball fan), wrestling games (r.i.p Smackdown series), so many fighting games and online FPS titles, during the PS3/360 generation, I put in literally thousands of hours in competitive games (more then the generation prior by miles) in COD4, TF2, BFBC2, BF2142, CS GO etc, I feel people who play those maybe fit that term better, they are players like someone is a player in a football game, they are training, they are competing, in teams etc (not to say they are exactly the same btw) but the term fits them much better.

The single player stuff I play now days, I can't really say I "play" in terms of what someone who plays Halo professional is doing, it would be like saying someone who drives to work is competing or is an athlete etc The term now is simply used based on an absence of a better one, based on default of what it used to mean for the majority of the genre.

With how broad the medium is now, I feel the term might only really apply to those who are doing it competitively. I have no issue with that btw. All I know is what we used to do with "gaming" then, is not 100% of what the majority does with the medium now, to the point of it not even applying to the majority.

I'm not sure what it could be called.

Digital interactive experience, digital interactive entertainment.
