Entering Japan with porn

Ok this is kind of a dumb question, but I'm moving to Japan, and I know that uncensored porn is technically illegal there. Like everyone else, I have a bunch of uncensored porn on my computer. Is it actually possible to get into trouble for that? Could they in principle confiscate my hard drive? What's the worst that could happen?

(no I don't have any child porn or anything that would be illegal in North America.)

I believe the punishment is that they review the alleged pornography on your person, and then they commit every last one of those sexual acts against you.

then they let you into the country.

They aren't going to search your hard drive. Seriously. You'd be FAR more likely to get a computer searched coming into the US than you would Japan. As well, I'm pretty sure there's uncensored porn in Japan.

I never took my computer overseas, but I can't imagine them taking your computer, logging on to it, and digging through your folders just to find some porn. When they put your computer through the XRay, it doesn't magically read your harddrive.

They can see the contents when they X-ray the laptop anyway. :D

Just stick it on an encrypted USB stick if you must.

I entered japan with a computer full of porn. No problem.

I don't think it is illegal to show uncensored porn, but I think it is something that companies do... wait a second, nobody would censor porn if it wasn't illegal!

It amazes me to no end that porn is censored in Japan. Does anyone know the actual laws in this regard. Wikipedia isn't quite clear on the matter. They act like it's a taboo to show the public region, but is it illegal?

From what my friend tells me, they'll confiscate it if they catch it in customs, but we were talking about physical dvds and stuff. If it's on you hard drive I doubt they'll actually go through and start scanning your computer.

Done it before but the pron was inside a folder in my PSP's memory card. :lol

I made a separate folder which can't be accessed through the PSP itself.

it actually still is illegal. They were reforming the laws.. but nothing really changed..

In the many times I've entered Japan, I think every trip through customs took, at most, a minute. Basically, put my suitcase up on a counter, they take a quick look through it, and maybe ask like "Sooo... got any drugs?" or something to that effect.

Really? I was thinking there was fully uncensored porn now in Japan. Of course, I say that knowing next to nothing about such things; the only "porn" I typically have interest in is hair-nude level photos.

uh... japan has some of the best internet home connections in the world. sign up when you get there, go to any popular porn torrent site and repopulate your collection in a matter of minutes?

Also, encrypt your hard drive if you really want to keep your rape porn safe from prying customs eyes you freak.

when you enter the country you have to sign a customs declaration saying you don't have "obscene material" (i think that's the wording) on your person. they're not going to search your hard drive unless they think you're a terrorist (in which case you'd have bigger problems), but i guess you could get in trouble if they did a random bag check and found a magazine or something.

Most of the good stuff can be streamed and/or re-downloaded later anyway. Although I understand why you'd bring some - Japanese porn is usually too whiny or strange for me.

The best part is when they show you the pictures of drugs and ask you if you have any of that with you.

But from me they also wanted to know what the medication was I had on me. They never touched my laptop though.

I don't really understand how encrypting helps.

If you have a password on your whole laptop, you are obligated to enter it for them (at least in the US). Presumably they can order you to enter passwords for encrypted stuff as well.

truecrypt offers a feature where you can unencrypt the drive but it leaves a secondary portion encrypted. there is no way to tell if you used the 'real' or the partial password.

I went in and out with my laptop in which I keep a bunch of videos of me doing the naughties, and nobody checked.

But you guys are scaring me, next time I will put everything in a CD labeled FAMILY JEWELS or something.

Oh please. Japanese customs officials aren't going to go through your drive when you enter the country. However, there is a giant bin near the restrooms in the baggage claim/customs area in Narita where you are asked to discard any pornographic material. I always wondered what kinds of stuff they empty from that bin everyday.

If you want to be covert about it...

Burn it all to a DVD, marked as something else, and then shove it in your inner pocket of your laptop case. Delete it from your HDD and you're fine.

Or

Copy it all to an external HDD and encrypt it. Throw it in your bag and you're good to go.


You really shouldn't have a problem. The case you heard of is really not of the norm.

When I was in Japan, a few of my buddies had videotapes of uncensored porn. They said it was Yakuza porn :lol

I'm still not sure if they were joking or not.
