[Eurogamer] Upgrading to a 4TB SSD for your PS5 might cost less than you think

Right now, the largest SSD you can fit into the PS5 is a 4TB model, which expands your available game storage by a factor of seven (!). These drives are more expensive than 1TB or 2TB options, of course, but prices have dropped significantly. In fact, they might be considerably cheaper than you might expect!

In this mini roundup, we'll highlight four deals on 4TB SSDs suitable for PS5, including two models with built-in heatsinks for easy installation, and two models that come without at a lower price. We've also added prices for the US for context.

Addlink Addgame A95 4TB w/ heatsink - £385 (was £500)

The second-fastest SSD in this roundup with a preinstalled heatsink at a great price - our top pick.
Also available at $357 in the US.

WD Black SN850x - £379 (was £671)

The fastest SSD in this roundup (and the fastest in the PCIe 4.0 category overall, alongside the Samsung 990 Pro), the SN850x doesn't come with a heatsink but scores highly when it comes to load times and overall value.
Also available at $380 in the US. Heatsink costs $9.

Crucial P3 Plus - £251 (was £455)

The Crucial P3 Plus offers by far the best value, although it doesn't come with a heatsink and is a hair below Sony's speed recommendations - although even significantly slower SSDs worked fine in our testing.
Also available at $225 in the US. Heatsink costs $9.

Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus w/ PS5 heatsink - £430 (was £900)

The most convenient option, this 4TB SSD comes with a PS5-specific heatsink cover that works brilliantly.
Also available at $460 in the US - although I wouldn't recommend at this price.
First up we have the Addlink Addgame A95 which offers top-tier speeds, with up to 7200MB/s reads, and a preinstalled heatsink that fits perfectly in the PS5's rather shallow PS5 chamber. This debuted at £500, but now costs £385 - a good deal for a 4TB drive with this level of performance.

Our other top-tier choice is a famously fast SSD, the WD Black SN850x. It's marginally faster than the A95 and comes from a much better known brand, but it doesn't include a heatsink and costs around the same amount as the Addlink A95 at £379. If you do need a heatsink, we've tested and can recommend this model from Qivynsry for £8.

The cheapest SSD that we'd recommend for the PS5 is the Crucial P3 Plus, which narrowly misses out on Sony's 5500MB/s guidlines for sequential speeds but works just fine in a wide range of PS5 titles based on our extensive testing. Again, we recommend this this £8 Qivynsry heatsink, but even adding this to the cost you can still take home this 4TB SSD for less than £260 - making this drive £100 cheaper than other options.

Lastly, we have the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus which comes with this awesome PS5-specific heatsink that replaces the PS5's NVMe slot cover. This makes it by far the easiest and less fiddly drive to install, although performance isn't quite as strong as the Addlink A95 or WD SN850x. You do pay for that usability though, with an asking price of £430.

If none of the SSDs above tickle your fancy, then feel free to check our list of the best PS5 SSDs which also has more information on the installation procedure and Sony's requirements for compatible SSDs.

If you have any questions, or you find a better deal we should be recommending, do let us know in the comments below! You can also find us on Twitter @dealsfoundry and @dealsfoundryusa, where we share console and PC tech deals as we find them. Good luck out there!

What’s the value for me to have all those games at my disposal at all times if I just play 4 at most at any given time?

Opposite to having a cheap 4TB HDD and moving the games I want to play.

I guess some people really need to have all that data available to them at all times to never access it, lol.

To each their own, I guess.

It's nice that prices are going down but $400+ for the convenience of having more games installed than I can possibly play at the same time still seem rather pointless to me.
But cool for people that need that sort of stuff, non proprietary storage options are always great for exactly this reason.

I've got the 2TB SN850 (non-X) in my ps5 and really like it. I've also got the X version in my PC.

I got the Crucial P3 Plus 4tb last week for 250USD. You can get the PCIe3 P3 for 220. Stellar deals and both work with PS5. I'm using a 980 Pro 2tb for my PS5 but damn if you were looking for expansion, good time to buy.

If a 4tb with heatsink comes down to 250 I'll bite. So just a couple of more years waiting. Maybe less.
If you really wanted to get one earlier you could look into third party heatsinks and get the ssd bare.

Some of the third party heatsinks are pretty decent, especially the one from sabrent.

One guy did a comparison on youtube and it kept up with some of the ssds with heatsinks already on them.

Manufacturers add a bit too much on too the price of the heatsink versions, although even those are dropping fast.

Bro it’s $400 for the 2TB Xbox Card. Just Bonkers. I bought the 1TB on sale but even that was ridiculous. glad Sony went this route. I may pick up one of these.

I remember during the original 360 days, they had the proprietary HDD's and they were expensive. There was a hack where you just buy the same HDD that Microsoft uses, flash it and swap hard drives and it worked flawlessly. I did the for the 120GB hard drive. I wonder if the same can be on on the Series S/X.

With prices dropping like that, I'm thinking of moving the 1TB sn850 to the PC and grabbing a same 2TB for the console.

Back when I had a data cap I would wait until the end of the month and download everything up to the limit so that if I wanted to play something I would have it and not use cap in the beginning or middle of the month. My drives were always full.

Costs a kidney to expand Xbox storage to 4TB. I have a 2TB SSD I use for last gen games on my Series X but eventually 1TB internal won't be enough to hoard current gen games. That said you can just use the storage transfer feature which is super fast SSD to SSD, still the PS5 method is best.

My internet sucks. Takes me a week to download certain games and day 1 patches make unable to play day 1, if you have good internet it doesn't matter as much otherwise storage can be real handy.

temping but you’ll do fine with a 2tb nvme +
2tb external for ps4 games.
i have a huge backlog and yet to need to worry about storage

I have 1tb of expanded storage and find it excessive. My backlog with 4tb would make me lose sleep at night lol

Great for those who want to have 100s of games sit on their console, but I'll stick with the 667 GB built in. 667 GB is more than enough for me since I usually beat the games I play, and after I beat a game, the chance I go back is extremely slim.

Crazy but two years in I still have enough room for my PS5 games. I have a 1tb ssd hooked up via usb for PS4 games though.

It's not enough if you have PSVR2 headset, since all those games are digital.

Who the hell needs this. I can download any game in 10mins and only want to be playing at most 3/4 games any given month. Honestly the default drive is big enough for me. After the madness of file sizes last Gen I feel like they've stabilised this gen.

Won't be a problem for the PS6 either because even if games get much bigger, large SSD's will be cheap.

Agree. I also feel really overwhelmed when I see more than 5 games installed on my SSD, like I don't know which one to play and I end up wasting my time.

Last gen I rocked a stock 500 GB PS4 and never ran into storage issues.

I just got 2tb wd sn850x with heatsink.
4tb was just double the price so I passed. I don't need it ayway but it's nice not to have to make more free space before installing a game

Sometimes you have multiple people interested in different games that use the same console.
PS5 is extremely slow moving shit around. I swear it's faster to just redownload the damn game.

Can someone recommend me a 1tb drive for the PS5? I've lost track of tech nowadays :(

Always bizarre to see those articles praising unrestricted consumption and opulence. Really? Last three years were shit, we got a war in Europe, inflation is running rampart, but the most pressing issue is how to get more digital downloads on your drive? Then I guess WSJ also makes articles that make you question life’s purpose.
