PS5 shipment stabilized is the best news in Japan lately.
It could be better >20k but at least it is stable now.

As far as I can gather, 13 Sentinels sold around 500k on PS4, it's gonna be interesting to see what exactly the Switch version will add to that number.

It will probably get it to a million

The original did 34k first week, switch version might have similar momentum. It may also drop off faster since a lot of people are double dipping

I think that's wishful thinking, and unlikely imo. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see it happening.

When it launched on PS4 in Japan it's uptake was actually reasonably slow and grew with word of mouth. Total sales amounted to 200k incl. digital. That's 40% of its worldwide total, give or take. I just don't see it doing those number in Japan again, given that it's a 3 year old game that relied on word of mouth to end up being successful. So unless Switch owners in the west really take to this game, which is in itself a big ask, it's not hitting 1m worldwide at all.

It still has good word of mouth going for it, a lot of new conversation starting up around it again. 2020 was also a super packed year and it ultimately got robbed of more discussion because of the console launches and stuff.

Imo they should have released it on PC also

We'll see how it progresses. What are digital Switch game sales like? Are they strong in general for the platform? I think if it has a 10-15k drop off next week I don't think it will have legs.

PC market is a different beast, I don't doubt for a second that the game would reach 1m accumulated sales if it also launched there. But Vanillaware and Atlus in general are still not embracing it entirely.

Happy to see anouther audience have access to the title, solid visual novel game with excellent animation, the story keeps you guessing before it all starts to fall into place at the tail end. And while the combat even on harder missions can just be cheesed by focusing on turrets and drones it's visually very unique, like your playing some grand commander and your brain has to fill in what is going on in the Battlefield as you only have access to a command view.

Would highly recommend.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
PS5 doing a little better. It's still abysmal, but better.

PS5 hardware sales mean nothing as long as the software sales are what they are. Best selling PS5 titles in top 30 this week are at ~1550 each ( Elden Ring and GTA V).

PS5 - 2

Supply issues aside (because it isn't just a matter of selling hardware), it looks like Sony decision to completely give up on Japan is getting them exactly what they deserve. Congratulations Sony, the Vita sends it's regards.

I'm making my way through 13 Sentinels now and it's great. Glad to see that it's selling well because I'd love more Japanese adventure games with this level of production value. The battle part is okay, the fights have been pretty samey so far though. IDK if that ever changes, but even if it doesn't the adventure part is more than good enough for me.

Edit:

Also, Kirby is pure fun. I love that game.

Are these like the highest Xbox numbers ever in Japan?
For a while yes, but the Xbox 360 and original Xbox had much better numbers on several occasions. Highest I could find for Xbox 360 outside launch was 28,861 but I didn't do an exhaustive check.

Or they saw where the Japanese market was shifting and pivoted accordingly. I'm not sure what you're seeing in those sales numbers that suggests SONY made a mistake in shifting their production focus.

If it's all good then good for them.

To me Sony becoming close to irrelevant in Japan is catastrophic to them in the long term. For many years all the support they got from Japanese devs was what set them apart from the direct competitor. It affects a lot more than just their market share in Japan.

It's like the 5/6th highest week of the series life including the launch week. They did also hit like 6-7k this calendar year.

I think in a year, its possible that they catch up to xbox og lifetime sales.

Sony's position in Japan isn't just a result of their own actions.

Their success has always been dependent on third parties, and in recent years Japanese third parties have largely failed to grow their appeal to their domestic market (with some exceptions).

Japan has made up around 23% of Nintendo Switch Sales, so a 60K week in Japan would mean a global week of 260K on average.

Sales in millions of units.
