A Microsoft document on the purchase of Activision Blizzard provided a wealth of information surrounding these exclusives. In summary, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy XVI and Silent Hill 2 Remake can only be released on Xbox if Sony allows it:

"Sony has made agreements with third-party publishers that require Xbox to be 'excluded' from the pool of platforms that those publishers can distribute their games on. Some prominent examples of these agreements include Final Fantasy VII Remake (Square Enix), Final Fantasy XVI (Square Enix) and Silent Hill 2 Remake (Bloober team)."

As you can see, Sony has made agreements with third-party publishers demanding the "exclusion" of the Xbox as a launch platform for the aforementioned games. The details are not clear. We can then assume that now there is little chance of these games arriving on Xbox, perhaps in the future when Sony wants it or when this contract with third parties ends.

Does Sony own square or something?

For those who think this is series, nope, just poking fun here. Game is timed exclusive. nothing more. It will come to xbox eventually.

Literally nothing stopping MS from money-hatting SE. They have clearly shown they are open to it.
Not true. The dynamics of the current market make it extremely favorable to the dominant system.

If we assume sales splits are still around 80/20 in favor of PS, then Sony pays SQEX enough to offset 20% sales. SQEX gets the 80% sales plus a check. Xbox has to cover 80% sales. It's probably 3x more expensive to get a timed exclusive for them, or more. And then Xbox only sells a smaller amount as well. Do this over and over and you bleed your competition dry from a position of market dominance. The systemic forces favor Sony. It's preventing any other players from competing directly on merit. They're priced out.

Makes a lot more sense for MS to invest in owning their own publisher than bleeding money on these losing deals. Rumor is they had to pay $100 million for 1 year of Tomb Raider last gen. It's just not worth it. Better to invest in acquisitions you own.

And people say exclusives are dead! Square Enix has a deal with Sony they can't cutt off with moneybags from Microsoft, simple as that

Although i was expecting FFVIIR to arrive on Xbox by now, looks like the exclusivity for Final Fantasy is a way bigger deal for Sony and PlayStation and there is a lot invested on it, a lot of PS fans on social media believe Sony is about to purchase Square supposedly.

A few games will stay on PlayStation with an iron grip, that's business

Interesting - Further on it gives you the gamepass numbers.

4.54 Since its launch in 2017, Game Pass has gradually grown to approximately 25 million subscribers. As above, this is 10 million fewer subscribers (28%) than what was forecasted for Fiscal Year 2022.331 Much of the growth so far has come from []. [] Xbox console users account for approximately []% of subscribers across all Game Pass tiers. Over the period July 2019-July 2022, []% of Game Pass Ultimate subscribers (who are entitled to play both the Game Pass console and PC catalogue) accessed Game Pass through a PC, and [] ([]% in total) accessed Game Pass Ultimate via xCloud.

Also a nugget that they are still working to bring Ubisoft into the fold.

4.62 Besides, Microsoft welcomes additional subscription services on the Xbox. EA Play is available on Xbox – and can be purchased either as part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription or on a standalone basis. EA Play is also available on PlayStation. Microsoft is also working to bring a new multi-game Ubisoft offering to the Xbox in coming months. The expectation that Microsoft would have the incentive to foreclose rival subscription services is entirely at odds with the fact that Microsoft is working to foster entry on console of one of these services.

What has happened to reading comprehension? How did the guy who send the tweet, and the people who are sharing/commenting on it, ever managed to finish elementary school?

The actual document literally talks about TIMED EXCLUSIVITY. It's called timed exclusivity exactly for that reason, meaning during that duration, certain platforms are excluded.

It's true that the writings from Microsoft are intentionally made to make this sound like permanent exclusives. But please everyone, use your brain and realize that Microsoft's intention is to mislead the public and the consumers. (see the inclusion of Bloodborne for further proof regarding this).

There's no difference between The Medium being timed exclusive for Xbox/PC, and Silent Hill 2 Remake being timed exclusive for PS5/PC.

Very, very interesting. No wonder Spencer was backtracking on the Gamepass Prophecy... but themnusing it seemingly as a reason as to why they should be allowed to buy moar says that Microsoft still believes it, and that Spencer's spinning the outlook to the public, most of which won't pay attention to this.

I've read some of these documents, but I've got to give this all a thorough read soon.

We are bored.
The game was timed exclusive. We just dont know how long.
It might be the entire remake until it comes to xbox.

All of those games wouldn't sell a shit on Xbox anyway. And we have data from other Square titles to prove it.

Also: the title is not what the tweet or the actual document says.

I just copied the title from an article, too lazy to read the entire thing

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Really hope we see that Octopath 2 has a similar agreement so that dumb talking point can die.

It probably does, but isn't a big enough name to warrant writing in a document like this.

. . .and BEFORE those agreements were in place? Or for future IP's with no such agreements attached? You jumbled what I wrote, so maybe slow down a bit before hitting "Post reply."

It's very likely Sony has first right on refusal on those things, hence *some* SE games still managed to get Xbox releases.

Why wouldn’t these games sell shit on the third place console?

As I said before, Sony is a greedy snake that doesn’t want any sort of competition. They crying like a baby about the MS Cod deal because they don’t want any competition.

For that reason alone I hope MS wins it.

If there is a company that is Anti-competitive and fair play its Sony.

Not like MS are bunch of Angels. But fuck. to release a game on every platform but not Xbox is an ass move no matter how you see it lol

Also looks like Elder Scrolls VI will be on Playstation:

Decisions regarding mid-sized games are not evidence of Microsoft’s incentives as they relate to Call of Duty: The games that the Phase 1 Decision cites as evidence of prior conduct are fundamentally different to Minecraft or Call of Duty and cannot be used as evidence of Microsoft’s “broad incentives” as they relate to Call of Duty. 214 • Titles such as Elder Scrolls VI (which is not expected to be released before [] with the last instalment in the series being released in 2011), as well as other future titles, will not involve Microsoft forgoing ca. USD [] per annum of revenue from PlayStation customers or disenfranchising ca. [] million MAU on PlayStation

Sony exclusive deals are super annoying.

Atleast with Xbox one's you know where you stand and the timed exclusivity tends to leak and it is usually 3-6months.

Huge shame these titles are probably forever locked away from Xbox.

Can't only blame Sony, as Konami and sqaure enix both accepted the deals.
