Although it's a very different game, the game is made not just to be solo friendly, but easy for high level people to help lower levels with stuff like level synch and a mentor system. The end-game is tailored for groups so a Linkshell and Grand Company will be essential if not early on, but at the later levels.
Just don't expect everything to be like FFXI, because neither the game, nor the people are the same, but still it won't be like WoW.
