Fish caught in waters off the coast of northern Japan, where an earthquake triggered a radiation leak at the Fukushima power plant, are still as contaminated today as a year ago, a study found.

Contamination levels were particularly high among species dwelling at the bottom of the ocean, as sinking radioactive materials tainted the seafood, the research showed. The findings, published today in the journal Science, suggest there is a continued source of radiation from the seafloor that will have a lasting impact, said Ken Buesseler, the study’s author.

“This means that even if these sources were to be shut off completely, the sediments would remain contaminated for decades to come,”
said Buesseler, a senior scientist at Woods Hold Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.

Bu-bu-bu coal kills more people!

Except coal doesn't affect animals and humans generations after generations. We stop using coal, we stop polluting. Want to stop using nuclear? First, good luck, it's a huge pain in the ass to declassify nuclear power plants. Second, good luck with the waste material, and the contamination for generations. With coal; shut the furnace. Done.

Well, the good news is that in the USA the fastest growing electricity generation systems are Natural gas and wind (in that order) these days.

And if you want to do better, buy a home and slap some PV panels on the roof. If you live in a reasonably sunny area, you can generate your own net electricity needs for $8K to $15K in parts. Oh, and you get a 30% tax-credit for that if you do.

So coal & nuclear are currently in competition to be the biggest loser energy source these days.

While this is bad and all - it's not quite as significant as you make it seem when I read the article. Seems like there are ways around it.

Isn't that "natural gas" mostly extracted with the fracking process? It's destroying lands, polluting lakes and households and making people sick.
