Fortnite Is Shutting Down In China November 15

Fortnite China, known as Fortress Night in the Chinese translation, will no longer be available according to the game's official website. The version of Fortnite in China is quite different from what the rest of the world plays, and was only available via an authorized Chinese internet provider.

"The test of 'Fortress Night' has come to an end. We will shut down the server in the near future," reads a Google translation of the website. It indicates that registration of new players and the download portal will be unavailable as of November 1 and the game will become inaccessible to existing players on November 15.
The news was shared by a reliable Fortnite source, iFireMonkey, who credited arkheops for spotting it. No other information about this has come to light as of yet and it's unclear whether this has to do with China's new restrictions against online gaming.

Fortnite China has quite a few differences from the version the rest of the world plays. According to the Fortnite Wiki, there are no in-game transactions and several gameplay features have been incorporated in order to make it easier for less skilled players. You stop receiving XP after 90 minutes and cannot compete in challenges; a notification then prompts you to go and study. There are also many cosmetic changes, for instance, no skulls are depicted due to a regulation prohibiting it.

Now we sit back and watch Tim Sweeney fire off a passive aggressive diatribe against the Chinese authorities on Twitter.
... or not.

What next? Closing Valve & Perfect World's Chinese Steam client?

China is a surveillance state run by a subtle and smart dictator. If I were chinese, I would plan on moving somewhere else. Ultimately there is no real justice in this country. "Justice" is arbitrary. The government can do whatever they want with you and you can't do anything about it. They can dictate what you are allowed to consume and what you are allowed that say. Fuck that.

Tencent has major sway in China. This will come back after the appropriate palms have been greased.

That's NOT how it works. Did you forget Alibaba's Jack Ma already? They fucked him in the ass (Ant Group IPO thing) and when he bitched about it they curbed him.
With the current round of restrictions all the players in the tech sector scrambled to offer their own solutions to controlling play hours for kids. Quickly so they may be spared.

Probably the closest thing to resembling fascism by definition. A capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental control and violent suppression to opposition.

Cutting off XP after 90 minutes is not even a terrible idea for a parental restriction. Do any Western games do that?

Why not offer some practical advice like giving out some local escort phone numbers?

Oooohhh, so when you take out the competitiveness, micro transactions, and dopamine fix from season pass/skin collecting…. You’re telling me the game then becomes pointless and unplayable? Shocked.gif
