Fuck Jack Ryan

So I happened on this video detailing Amazon's Jack Ryan series. Specifically it's huge lies regarding the state of Venezuela in the second season:

I haven't watched the show to be honest. My mom is the one who watched it on the regular and I only caught the odd episode.

But my God. What a complete misrepresentation of the real troubles that are plaguing that country. They made the main villain of the season a nationalist president while his opponent happens to be a socialist and one of the good guys. Never mind the fact that the problems of Venezuela can be traced to the socialist policies of Hugo Chavez that are now being continued by his successor Nicolas Maduro. I guess the series has to continue the Hollywood tradition of denying Far-Left policies created this shitshow.

Fuck this show man. You trying to create a political thriller and pussy out on the real issues.

It was particularly jarring and egregious. They party-swapped to make the Socialists the good guys, while trying to use Venezuela as a relevant current-day backdrop. The dictator is depicted as a right-wing, authoritarian strongman.

It would be like if they went to Russia, and Putin was depicted as a plucky, patriotic resistance leader being oppressed by the iron boot of an LGBTQIA+++ authoritarian dystopic regime.

Or if the first season made the terrorists the good guys, fighting back against some secular statist boogieman.

I thought the left hated Jack Ryan for being a right wing military jerk off show? Now you're telling me the right should hate it too because it... Doesn't realistically depict global socioeconomic topics?

Sheesh, does the show succeed in being an action packed political thriller? Or not?

Getting riled up over the inaccuracies in a FICTIONAL television show... Bunch of fuckin snowflakes.

This show just can't win. It was criticized by the left initially because moslems were the bad guy, now this..
Its just a show. Trying to nitpick over ideologies in entertainment is ResetERA-esque.

Yeh I was just gonna say. I remember hearing people on the left criticising how this season portrayed Venezuela.

It is a fictional show but if you watched the video you'd see the show takes a lot of its source and reference material from the real world and puts a spin on it. Like Chavez's daughter's proxy character and her love for the people compared to Chavez's daughter in real life.

Yeah, who really gives a shit. If you are getting your world view from fictional media with fictional characters and fictional regimes then guess what - your world view is fake.

Did you even watch the video? The show fancies itself a political thriller dealing with global political issues and in the second season it uses the crisis in Venezuela as a backdrop.

Again, it isn't real. It's fake. Made up. Fictional. It doesn't say "based on real events" or even make any claim to be tied to the real world.

Clear and present danger is the only Jack Ryan I like anyway.

Clickbait title. Also the video itself basically counters itself in the first 2 minutes. Then tried to reel itself into it's own argument but it was too late since the guy explained that it is fiction and based on reality. He just goes on to mansplain the clickbait material. This is just clearly too much nonsense because he wanted reality in his fiction that he made clear was fiction and then was mad when the fiction isn't reality. The problem is real and needs to be discussed by let fiction be fiction, even if it dabbles in reality.

I think what bothers people is the overall landscape right now.

Let’s take Jack Ryan on it’s own, in an abyss. It’s fine for a fictional work to change the rules a little bit, isn’t it?

Let’s place Jack Ryan back in our reality, where almost every single work of fiction is pushing a singular agenda of some kind, praising progressivism in all things, and never failing to jump down conservatism’s throat for offenses real or imagined (usually imagined).

All of a sudden, altering a real life setting to make progressive politics look great, and blame conservative, nationalistic ones for the actions of the former, has a more propagandistic look to it.

I actually ran across the video. I decided to skip Jack Ryan because I worried it would be CIA drivel. I have an inner-contradiction where I love spy stories but I know any spy story based on reality is going to be infused with propaganda. Clancy stories tend to be taken from real world history.

The issue is this: The show is misrepresenting or rather hiding the socialism element. Why is this? Not sure. Apparently it is including CIA meddling, which is accurate. Why it left out the socialism angle, I'm not sure. I guess I'm more interested in why they did that rather than them doing it.

Season two was super boring too, except for a few moments really. I was disappointed.

I mostly enjoyed season 1. Hopefully season 3 will be better.

I suppose in [current year] it does seem suspect with the changes, but it is fiction, so I can give it somewhat of a pass.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
It’s a fictional TV show not real life.

It still creates a fake perception among viewers that can have real life consequences.

Probably they ran a focus group and some Bernie supporters made it in.

They probably overreacted to the criticism of the first season by the usual dimwits that it was pro law enforcement, military and wait for it....islamophobic.

The mistake is reacting at all. You already got cancelled by these fools. Now you piss off the people who liked the first season but sniff out wokeness under every pillow.

...I mean I didn't even find it overly "woke". It was just bad. Trying to do a 'real' story then just fucking it all up and forgetting about characters, using super tired tropes. The bald guy was written so poorly I wanted to cut myself with AIDS glass.

This..... THIS GUY!!!!!!

It does show CIA meddling, but presents the CIA as a benevolent force for good in both seasons. The only time anyone from the CIA is presented negatively is when they are disagreeing with the title character. Otherwise they are shown as tirelessly working to make the world a better place, rah rah etc.

Not a POV I find all that compelling in regards to the agency, TBH.

SEASON 2 WAS SO BAD IT MADE ME TYPE THIS IN CAPS!!!!!!

Season one was legit tho.

I enjoyed it; both seasons had some silly shit in them IMO. Being able to
successfully invade a presidential palace with like 3 people
seemed pretty ridiculous.

Overall the series is fun if you want some good gun fights sprinkled with CSI-esque "this one piece of random info changes everything" moments. Popcorn action.

Probably. I didn't even know the show got shit for its' first season. I kinda just assume every piece of media gets shit for not being woke enough anyway. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

That's a similar BS argument that's constantly levelled against violent video games. No it doesn't have real life consequences. It's entertainment, it's not a documentary. Anyone who takes life advice from a made-for-amazon streaming series deserves to be ridiculed and thrown out of the country, not protected by censoring random tv shows.

I thought Season 1 was more SJW, there was a whole part in Europe where a female counter-terrorism commander goes off on how evil America is. Felt weird.

I don't really recall that Season 2 going into politics in either direction. There's just a corrupt regime that was really bad in its programs. The challenger has a populist streak to her.

Season 1 was moderately entertaining. Season 2 was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen, I only kept watching because I was laid out sick on the couch and didn't have the will to find another show. I'm all for suspension of disbelief but there's a limit, some really dumb, incredibly unbelievable stuff happens, just really poorly written material.

It's fucking fun to watch. Waiting for season 3. Yes it's fiction. While watching it i did not assume it was an accurate representation of Venezuela!

It became a generic action show in season 2. Dude is supposed to be an analyst, not Neo.

Geez, can we just for a second enjoy something and not worry about politics?

I watched the second season, enjoyed it, and never once thought my freedoms were under attack the far-left.

It's totally fair, though, to point out when a show makes poor decisions that make the show itself worse.

I'm probably never going to watch season 2 of this show, season 1 was mediocre and I still don't buy Office Jim playing Jack Ryan.
