Genshin Impact has had the highest first-year gaming revenue of all time. Beats GTA V, Fortnight. Makes more money than Vegas casinos.

Not bad for a "Chinese BoTW rip-off".

Japanese companies (not named Nintendo) can only dream about such numbers. F2P/GAAS is here to stay, so maybe it's time for Square to actually do something about GI dominance...

lol I dont understand why people would spend money in a free to play game. but then again, i dont understand why people will give $12 billion a year to MGM grand.
In both cases it's the addiction. These gambling companies know what they're doing. Casino always wins.

I must admit, I'm not entirely F2P in GI, but I spent peanuts in it relatively to what current gen games costs.

If I play in something for a year DAILY, I don't feel bad about throwing a couple of $$ on it once in a month If I'm enjoying myself.

Someone should tell Square-Enix, I know they have been wanting to get into the Gaas model.
Bro, their idea of gaas was slapping an Avengers name on a turd made by a company which obviously lacked an expertise:

I mean... you can say a lot of bad things about GI, but it's a quality made game.

I'd say it's earned it, even if it's stingy. I've been playing it since launch. I'm a very light spender on it, maybe $5-10 a month.

It's a fun game. It's huge. There's lots to do. Lots of fresh content on rotation. I play it daily and enjoy the routine, building new characters and trying new comps. There are lots of metas that you can ignore or dive into. It's got a very robust housing system if that's your thing. It has multiplayer you can safely ignore. A lot of the stories and quests are actually pretty interesting. The locations and music are crafted with care and visually pleasing. Some parts of the game you can just park and enjoy how pretty it is. It's like BotW except you can hot-swap between different characters, and your weapons don't break.

I will say as far as a gatcha game, it's not generous at all and the best way to play is just slowly build up currency to roll for the characters you want. There's very little ground between light spender and whale.

People love waifus, simple as that, western developers are giving up so much super easy to earn money by creating all these ugly female characters. Whatever game you make, make sure there is at least an option for players to create their own attractive waifu character. That's high profit margin and easy to implement feature right there.

Genshin Impact is a good Open-world RPG game. I am a light player of the game, played it a couple hours here and there and really enjoyed it, haven't spent even a dime for any F2P.

Most of the time we moan about unfair gacha and cheap MiHoYo. It's more fun to do it together.

Insane what some people will spend money on. I'm guessing anime tiddies are one of the main driving forces here?

Yeah, mostly that.

It's a good game, but it generates profits by making you spend money on casino 🎰 in hopes that you will pull your favorite hero.

There's a paid BP but it's cheap and is mostly about QoL.

Game sees big spikes in spending with people buying gems 💎 with real money directly from the store only when new heroes is released :

You can enjoy it in peace as a single player open world RPG with 0 money spent. Join the |OT| if you're interested or have any questions.

Last DLC/mtx I bought was a MW3 map pack 10 years ago. Probably $15. At least I got 3 or 4 maps out of it.

Its very simple.

You have money, and you want to spend it. For you, that would be buying games. For others, its spending money on what they enjoy.

I spent 50$ on fifa ultimate. Its not worth for me to buy new games, considering I havent even played the ones I bought before. So the surplass money would be better spent on what I like, or gives me value. That 50$ in real world is 3 xlarge pizza, which you will send it to the bathroom next day.

On other hand, you get the minority who spend $5k, because they cant control themselves. I have seen these people. I also know people who spent $150k+ on a single mobile game. These guys are rich though, so that money is worthless to them.

I don't got much going for me in life, but at least I ain't a degenerate who spends actual money in Genshin Impact.
Arent you a degenerate who visits this website, and spends real money on video games?

Let people spend on what they want to. That is their life and their choice. You and I have no right to tell them, what to do with their money.

P.S. Game is fun. Its like breath of wild, if you can endure the annoying characters voices. You can glide, swim, and climb. Its very fun game.

Nah, I’m just ripping on Square Enix for their comments in the thread you posted. They just can’t get it right.

They give what their fanbase wants, in theory.

Which is waifus/husbandus. The second part is meta and kit(abilities, skills and ult). And in between them, there are gatchas.

Think of this as if gatcha is a fishing rod and all above is the bait.
People underestimate the weak will/lack of moral of simpletons.

My wife was absolutely hooked on this game, the mind tactics and characters they use to earn money, are just ridiculous. Truly the next flavor of the month and time sensitive purchases, uses fear to motivate. Nothing new and very similar to Fornite. But they really took the Blizzard psychology warfare and amped it up. It's a pretty polished game with addictive gaming loops.

I am surprised China hasn't taken action against it, like Fortnite. I felt like every purchase was financing the Chinese government or something.

I've been playing it. It's very good. The world is HUGE.
So much love in this game. Not a cynical build at all. Very impressed.

And Aloy from Horizon is in it as an unlockable freebie. Hopefully there's more weird crossover bits.

I have to say this is the best Gacha I've played. I was actually motivated to do so because one of my friends works for Mihoyo, and she asked me for some help regarding translations (she wanted me to check if Portuguese translation is good).

I don't play this religiously, but it's on my phone, and sometimes I just hop in and enjoy the world. It's really that good.

I play it and might spend on it occasionally. It’s pretty addicting and fun, plus you can play it with friends, it’s mechanics are very similar to BoTW if not outright copy.

Im a little surprise about how much it’s making though.

And It's not on Xbox. Probly a good thing.
Why is that a good thing?

Well Casino's have to give some money back to the players, to get them to keep playing.

Digital games don't have that annoyance.

Kinda yes and no.

What's really scary and really puts things into perspective is that genshin impact has virtually no cosmetic items/skins to purchas!

All this revenue comes only from new heroes and people pulling for their constellations (duplicates). Compare it to the cosmetics store in the Fortnite. Crazy.

MiHoYo is leaving a lot of money on the table by not releasing any skins.
