I played on the Series S and Switch. Plays/controls really nice on the Xbox, but even after remapping controls and jumping through hoops on the Switch, I find it nearly unplayable.
How so? The control scheme you use on your Xbox probably very closely reflects the original. They basically had the modern FPS control scheme way before it was a standard. It’s about exactly as I thought. The controls are FAR better than the N64 in my opinion… that controller was a mistake… even though I spent many years using it.
I can appreciate defending it. I myself used that control pad for many years and thousands of hours across dozens of games. How so? The control scheme you use on your Xbox probably very closely reflects the original. They basically had the modern FPS control scheme way before it was a standard.
Holding the controller with the left hand on the left handle and right hand on the middle one you basically have, as seen today, left shoulder button for precision aiming (disabling moving rather than just slowing you down as is common today), the right trigger to shoot (Z under the stick), the d-pad to move forward/back and strafe (like the left analog stick now but that wasn't a standard back then and analog control is hardly necessary given we still use WASD on PC, lol), the analog stick to look around/turn/aim (on the right hand as we do today) and they even got fairly intuitive crouching and leaning controls worked in which many later games didn't as since the precision aiming disables moving the movement controls then lean left/right, back crouches and if held it's a toggle so you can stay crouched and move around until you tap the aim button again.
Sure, the controller is a bit cramped since it also accomodates different styles for different games, like you would hold the left and right handles skipping the middle for something like Street Fighter (that it never got, lol) and the middle and right handles for 3D adventures like Mario and Zelda but, while with the above method buttons A and B are a bit less convenient to reach with your thumb to interact/reload and switch weapons with, it's not so far removed from modern controls (hence why remapping it on modern controllers works so well). Of course back then most people used the c buttons to move/strafe holding the controller on the middle and right handles (or as was seen on Saturn and even Dreamcast later since there was no way to have their one stick usable with the right hand as on the N64) so basically the reverse of today but that was a choice and if they preferred that over the modern schemes, hey, whatever works, that still meant they had all important controls like moving/strafing and aiming/turning as on a PC FPS while today's common scheme was still and is still an option too.
Users choosing to follow a different standard at the time or in later years failing to realize there is also an option for a scheme closely resembling today's standards doesn't make the controls or controller bad, it was pretty ingenious design.
How in the world is that possible? I mean, the n64 original would hit like 10 fps regularly during MP. They couldn’t get this to at least a stable 30FPS?Played it for a bit on Xbox (Series X), disappointing release to be honest. This isn't Rare's in-house remaster, it's a high-res port of the N64 version by Code Mystics. There's numerous graphical issues, and the framerate frequently tanks hard, harder than the N64 original if you can believe that. It still plays great, but after seeing what could and should have been, it's tough to swallow. It was free for me, I guess.
Also… man that thumb stick was damn near painful after hours of use. Most if not all FPS on N64 had that control scheme available. I think it was even the default on some. Again, I don't see what's dated, you just have a d-pad on the left hand instead of an analog stick. Just as you have WASD on PC which is digital and not analog. A bit awkward and cramped? Sure, but it works and resembles modern controls in near 1:1. Even after twin stick controllers it took a while to figure the scheme out when GE feels fine (granted largely thanks to very generous auto aim but hey, Doom and other games on PC had 100% vertical auto aim too, whatever works, works).

Source? Why would Nintendo not want the remaster and just ask for it as part of the deal, so they could release both the original on their online service and the remake thing as a proper store release, instead of block them from it?Nintendo probably forced them to make zero attempts to optimize, after all, they forced them to not use the remaster which was basically done.
Come on, Nightdive's remasters like some you mention are usually a ton better than this since they reimplement them in their own KEX engine and make them run great with all the features you'd expect in modern games plus they keep improving their work as seen in Powerslave which even has enhancements that fit in like a glove as if the original game was designed like that to begin with (additional decorations, lava waterfalls where there used to be just brown walls and other things like that which look natural when you see them but going back to the original they aren't there).I like it but then again I wasnt expecting the second coming of Christ. It's an old N64 game and you take it for what it is.
And for an old fucker like me, it's perfect. It goes in that space between Turok, Shadowman and all the other retro classics

I mean, it was an Xbox 360 game and not exactly its most impressive, Switch has had plenty improved ports and games that are beyond PS360 so a port of a low end game like that would seem viable with differences similar to this release (a smaller resolution upgrade than on Xbox basically).
I'd think it's just as likely both just agreed they don't care for an all things considered low fi even for its time remake that is now two (but looks three) generations removed and needs a remake itself plus costs more to port since no team is fresh off working on the project so went with the original.
Also, Code Mystics is a good dev, if they fucked anything up they probably just weren't given the right request or enough time for it. Their SNK fighting game remasters were the best on Steam and elsewhere with rollback netcode and great features and enhancements.
It's such a waste that the Rare 360 Remaster wasn't released instead.
I know, and I love Nightdive for what they are doing. And I even forgive that Bladerunner output they give. But I know that sometimes you're never going to get the remaster you want.Come on, Nightdive's remasters like some you mention are usually a ton better than this since they reimplement them in their own KEX engine and make them run great with all the features you'd expect in modern games plus they keep improving their work as seen in Powerslave which even has enhancements that fit in like a glove as if the original game was designed like that to begin with (additional decorations, lava waterfalls where there used to be just brown walls and other things like that which look natural when you see them but going back to the original they aren't there).
That’s how it is on Xbox. Is it different on Switch?Muscle memory is working against me. I keep wanting to move with the left stick, look around/aim with the right stick, and shoot with R2.
They wanted the remaster or something like Goldeneye Source maybe.I like it but then again I wasnt expecting the second coming of Christ. It's an old N64 game and you take it for what it is.

Source? Switch can easily run an Xbox 360 game that looks worse than an Xbox game so they could have just asked for that as part of the deal and enjoy the same parity as now, ie just lower resolution on Switch. Maybe MS didn't wanna give that?Nintendo killed that dream though.
Remember this had to be agreed upon by all parties including MGM and Eon Productions, so it's possible this was the path of least resistance way to rerelease the N64 rom without having to relicense all the actors' likenesses and music and remain within legal constraints of the original contract.Source? Maybe they both decided an outdated looking remake that looks at best a little newer than the 3-4 gens removed original and needs $ to finish/port and needs a remake itself if it's to cater to people who want good graphics isn't worth it vs paying Code Mystics peanuts to emulate the rom?
I mean...it took 25 years and an agreement between two video game giants...and whoever else holds the James Bond license at this point. I'd rather have this than nothing.Low/no effort. It's a shame really.
Looks like Goldeneye. Its still fun.Hey guys I heard this is low effort and looks like shit. Is that true?
Oh fo sho, man. Was just poking fun at the samey conversation going on about the game. My entire YouTube feed is full of neckbeard QQ. LolLooks like Goldeneye. Its still fun.
I just got on the plane in level 2. Stealthily playing levels is great. The auto aim has such a unique feel to it also. Just fun to shoot and hit enemies.Oh fo sho, man. Was just poking fun at the samey conversation going on about the game. My entire YouTube feed is full of neckbeard QQ. Lol
Just made it to the jungle level. Forgot how many enemies they throw at you in later levels. Can’t remember if the number increases on higher difficulties but I know the game gets brutal in terms of damage you receive. The challenge is part of the fun tho.
I love the auto aim in this because you can spray and pray while going 100 miles an hour. I play the starter difficulty like Doom. Don’t start stealthing until 00 because the damage is insane!I just got on the plane in level 2. Stealthily playing levels is great. The auto aim has such a unique feel to it also. Best post. It’s just an upscaled version in an emulator and not the cancelled Rare xbla remake from 2007 that got leaked.
This is likely as good as they can do to just get the game out after all these years of licensing issues. You can’t even buy the game anyways and need game pass, Rare replay, or NSO. So it’s just a fun nostalgia hit.
Absolutely. I've played through it on the 360 but to have an official release of it would have just been the better option. I'm guessing there must be a reason for it not to be released. It's really easy to play though the Xenia emulator
True, but here we areThey wanted the remaster or something like Goldeneye Source maybe.

I always made sure to shoot the keyboards, because they explode, too.Excited to see people’s reactions of the chairs exploding.
