Golgo 13; a PERFECT licensed game...but what are others?

Now of course there are some great licensed games out there, but for the most part the "licensed game" is synonymous with shovelware that is just kind of shit. NES/SNES/PS1 era was just filled with absolutely licensed crap that took a property and jammed it into a genre or game that it just did NOT belong in...and then it was rushed to hit some sort of sales window. Just absolute garbage thrust onto the fans

But SOMETIMES a developer takes a licensed property and pairs it with a genre that is just absolutely PERFECT for the license. Then they make a great game to go with that perfect genre.

Like Golgo 13! A manga based on the worlds best sniper...in a light gun arcade game where you play AS A SNIPER...with gameplay that is just some of the best stuff put to an arcade board in the 90s. Plus it just straight up borrows plotlines from the manga for fans to play in real life.

It's like the TMNT from Konami....except it's the Golgo 13 from NAMCO.

But what are some other "perfect" licensed games Gaf? What do you got!

Was actually an amazing game...

Outside of that the Megadrive's Disney library such as Lion King, Aladdin and Toy Story where pretty fantastic too.

Dragon Ball FighterZ by ARC System Works is the best selling ever game of the studio for a reason. The IP and the studio were a perfect match and they delivered a great game that resulted in awesome sales.

Yeah, i just wish they could make a Street Fighter Alpha game with the same techniques as GG Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

Mutant Apocalypse was good. I played this a lot as a kid. That and X-MEN 2 on the Genesis.

I don’t know how you would rank this, but Die Hard the arcade game. I owned the PS1 Die Hard, but if you went to the arcade you got to play the good Die Hard game.

I own this for PS1 and it’s a great beat ‘em up for the console. Too bad it was never localized in English.

It’s so hard to even think of Die Hard Arcade as a licensed game though as Sega shoehorned the shit out of the Die Hard franchise on that one

10/10 amazing game though

The SNES one was good too, but I preferred the Genesis one because it let you use a sword.

If only they had a way to prevent you from just looking down at the bottom half of the screen or had more similar looking rooms. Still, this is a unique game even to today.

I'm still surprised Atari published some good games after the Jaguar tbh.

Oh yeah; also:

Super cool and convincing sprite work, should've gotten a 32X port

I love how The Thing on PS2 was accepted as canon by John Carpenter too

Even though the source material is a game itself, I still consider this to be a video game license.
Also, it's easily one of the best games ever made. Top 3 without a doubt.

Less conventional, but still honest choice. Illiterates need not apply.

So true; Hollywood has done everything to screw Carpenter over for decades so I'm glad gaming at least did right by him.

Like, The Thing (the movie) had a 2.5 star rating for decades and they only recently gave it the 4-star rating it deserved.

I think everyone knows the Insomniac Spiderman games are awesome; this seems to be more about retro games tho. I never played the PS1 Spiderman games so I don't know how good they were or were received at the time.

From the old games, like SEGA MegaDrive (Genesis) and Nintendo Family Computer (NES) I remember Robocop and TMNT to be the prime examples of excellence.

The nes game was a little on the difficult side but was very cool once you got into it.

Oh yeah, forgot about the TMNT games. I usually just think about the arcade one but the SNES & MegaDrive had their own ones, too.

Turok was a licensed game? Was it based on a comic book series?

That MMPR fighting game is awesome! I did not play the SNES Tiny Toons games, but I did play the sports-themed one on Genesis and liked it back in the day. Wonder how I'd like it playing it today...

Alien: Isolation (this was just released on GOG today for $12.49 all DLC)

Ghostbusters The Video Game on Xbox 360 (even WAY better than Afterlife)

Marvel Ultimate Alliance

Metro series (the games were based on the novels so not sure if novels count)

Star Wars: KOTOR 1 and 2 and Jedi Fallen Order

Krondor series (also based on novels)

Star Trek Elite Forces and DS9 The Fallen

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb and Infernal Machine

SF Kosmo

Sam and Max Hit the Road is the best licensed game. It's so good you totally forgot it WAS a licensed game.

Simpsons arcade is so overrated as a licensed game. Just hammered popular characters into the same cookie cutter formula as all their other licensed arcade game with little regard for whether or not that even made sense.

I thought Telltale did a pretty good job as a company that dealt almost exclusively in licensed games. Walking Dead was great. I liked their take on Batman too.

Datasoft made a series of awesome licensed games back in the Apple II, C64 & Atari 400/800/XL days.

I grew up on every one of these games and I agree with you.

Although I prefer The Goonies 2 game on the NES. It was a Metroidvania before Metroidvania was a thing.
