Gran Turismo 7 Will Be More Like Classic GT Titles, Says Kazunori Yamauchi

Kazunori Yamauchi has again reaffirmed that Gran Turismo 7 will be a main sequence title in the mold of previous games in the series.

The Polyphony Digital studio head was talking to journalist Toshifumi Watanabe for Octane Japan, in an interview published earlier today. While the conversation largely centered on Scapes, there was plenty of time to talk about the PlayStation 5, Gran Turismo 7, and the “royal purpose” of the series too.

One of the questions posed by Watanabe referred to the identity of Gran Turismo, and its future. Although Yamauchi wouldn’t be drawn on the latter part of that, he did make special mention of the influence that Japanese car culture had on the original Gran Turismo, and how that acted as a purpose behind the series.

“I myself grew up as a car enthusiast surrounded by the influence of Japanese automobile manufacturers and the transmission of automobile media,” comments Yamauchi, “and that is also the driving force behind my production. Although the title has been played worldwide, I have never forgotten that it originated in Japan, and now I feel the responsibility and mission of inheriting the Japanese automobile culture.”

Interestingly, Yamauchi acknowledges that fans may not always follow how Gran Turismo games change from generation to generation. That particularly applies to Gran Turismo Sport, and its shift into esport. “It may have seemed quite outlandish for some people!” he remarked, and notes that support for the game grew in a different way to previous titles, gaining more momentum later in its life.

Sport Mode then, as we’ve seen in the Gran Turismo 7 trailer last July, still has a major role to play, but GT7 will be nostalgic for those who played the previous games. “While inheriting elements such as the [FIA] championship realized in Sport, Gran Turismo 7 will return to the royal purpose of full volumes like [Gran Turismo] 1-4, and provide the best Gran Turismo experience at present,” says Yamauchi.

Of course we’ve previously heard that GT7 would be a combination of the “past, present, and future” of Gran Turismo, so this reinforcement comes as music to the ears of those fans of classic GT games.

The interview also covers ground like the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, at which Yamauchi has been a guest judge for 11 years, and the real-time ray-tracing capabilities of PS5. You can read the full article — in Japanese — on the Octane Japan website.

This game needs to come out this year and push the ps5 to the max. Well I want it to anyhow.......lol

really? The first 2 were revolutionary for console racing, there was nothing like it, even groundbreaking graphics.

this one is looking exactly like GTS and even missing VR

indeed a retro title

Honestly I don't really care what kind of GT game it is, I've loved 1-5 and Sport (never played 6). All I really want now is great AI, the AI is shocking and far behind every other racing game out there, they're literally lifeless and the games have always been overtaking sims more than anything, that finally needs to change.

I think you probably have to choose one. What we've seen so far suggests it's built on GT Sport but with some added bells and whistles but fundamentally the same game. Unless, that is, they just copied the cockpit exactly from GT Sport to throw us off but I doubt it.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Ray tracing, 4K, mind blowing graphics/gameplay, and terrible menus/loading time is what to expect from GT7.

The cars don't need to be updated to be better, it's bells and whistles and trackside details that do.

The real question, is are we gonna get 100% PS5 car models or will they recycle from last gen.
They made them too detailed for last gen and specced them down to run on PS4. PS5 will use the higher poly models. Not like we're at a point where they can look much better though.

Man, you're both wrong. There's only one valid GT2 intro and that's the Japanese one.

The GT theme is iconic and far superior to some generic songs.

Whatever they do i hope they give us the choice to customize the menus and races with the songs we like (from their selections). There were some songs that i really liked in GTSport but most of them i hated. Would have been nice if i could choose which ones to play.

Kazunori Yamauchi should shut the fuck up and stop talking about Gran Turismo 7 And talk when it’s out , Says Neogaf user Spukc

Yeah the whole two interviews? Why should he talk about it when it's out? We can play the game, no one needs people to talk about it at that point.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.

PAL version is much better though. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

Also loved the PSP intro song:

That's the version I remember, bit dated now so that's why I went with the standard US version.

Going against the grain here, I'm not happy with this news because I really enjoyed Sport for what it was. The online racing is where it's at and an iracing style system for a console game was desperately needed.

Hopefully there will still be a Sport like online component.

I don't like competing with other humans very much, surely it'd be weird if the online component was really different though surely, don't people (like yourself) really like it? Don't fix whats not broken I say.

I would love to wowed by racing game graphics again, the teaser is a good start certainly, it was really nice.

It will still have the online elements of GTSport:

Although hopefully it will not have the "online-only" save system bullshit that Sport has.
