Plus, a new standalone version of GTA Online for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will debut at launch — available for free for the first three months to PlayStation 5 players — making it easier than ever before for new players to experience everything GTA Online has to offer.

Very quietly.
We've been hearing mumblings about a timed GTA 6 exclusivity for years now.
As well as Sony spending a shit ton of money this gen on timed exclusives from 3rd parties.
Wonder if it ends up being true.
Massive if it is.

We knew this for a while.

Also, we can call it an 'investment' considering the microtransactions waiting.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
There is no different with putting games on gamepass.

Its the same thing.

Is it on gamepass? I dont think it is. could be mistaken but i dont think it is

A stand alone game being free on one platform, and not the other, definitely means money was involved.
You haven’t read what I said, have you? A game for free for few months in one platform but not another is not moneyhatting. The game is not timed exclusive. It’ll be available everywhere at launch, just not for free. Your OP is 100% false and misleading.

this isnt on gamepass.

and it hints at potential coziness between R* and Sony. Wouldnt be surprised to see GTA 6 get marketing with Sony at the very least

They gotta spend wisely this gen since they cant compete with MS buying entire got damn publishers.

I think there is or has been negotiations between sony, r* and take 2 regarding future GTA6 exclusivity.

Weather they will get it or not who knows.

Jim Ryan's timehats are legendary. He tried to moneyhat Starfield and it blew up in his face.

I can definitely see MS saying fuck it and buy Take2 out right to prevent future GTA exclusivity.

This moron has already lost the biggest FPS and the biggest WRPG studio. Cant wait to see him screw PS owners by losing GTA as well.

That's nice for PlayStation players, but it's not like you can't play it on Xbox , it will just cost you some money. Kind of a weird headline....

Those things aren’t related.

On Neogaf and Twitter, money hat is supposedly when you get a timed exclusive.

In “reality”
The act of paying somebody a large sum of money in order to gain an unfair advantage over another person or group of people. Originated from the concept of a Videogame Publisher providing Videogame Journalists with hats full of money in order to gain favorable review scores. Also used as a term for stealing away a high-profile Game Developer from another gaming platform. Similar in concept to Selling Out.

"Everybody says the game sucks, but PLAY Magazine gave the Xbox 360 version of Sonic the Hedgehog a 9/10. Sega must have been generous with the money hats."

So originally nothing really to do with timed exclusives but because certain fans like to push Playstation “MoneyHats” timed exclusives, its the term used now.
So it can also be used for MS spending undisclosed amounts of money to get games on Gamepass.

Playstation isn’t the only one ”moneyhating” or getting timed exclusives though. Call of Duty DLC on the 360. Or the Medium, Stalker 2, Warhammer, Yakuza 7 on Xbox Series….. But shhhhhhh about those moneyhat deals

Nikana

Go Go Neo Rangers!
You did do yeah but i thought they changed it to a seperate download now, like how they did with 'Red Dead Online', which is seperate from RDR2.
I believe that happens with this new version. But I dont believe its ever been FTP. I could be wrong though. I havent played it in awhile.

they never said it was free for the first few months
But they do as third party titles can expire from the service.

And it is a very simple point that people are making, I'm not sure why you are failing to grasp it. Let's hope it isn't wilful.

Game Pass titles, GwG titles, PS+ titles, Epic Store giveaways, these are all funded by the platform holder giving money to the publisher and so this situation is entirely analogous, which in turn means that if you want to call this a money hat then you must also call all of the above money hats as well.

Except nobody does because the term 'money hatting' historically means that someone has paid money to gain exclusivity on where or when something launches - ie. a timed exclusive or a fully blown exclusive. Neither applies here - it is available on multiple platforms at from the same date.

So we get texture upgrades, better draw distance, and some kind of ray tracing. Would be ok if the RT is available at 60fps, but I'd be amazed if it is.

This will NEVER happen! It'll probably cost over $1 Billion to make happen and imo that's NOT worth it!!

I love how you have to really scrape the bottom of the barrel, even reach back as far as a decade ago or list a game Microsoft actually helped with developing, to come up with an example of Xbox actively moneyhatting.

I don't give a fuck about GTA Online, it was included with the main game anyway, free for 3 months? OK Rock*.

They helped develop Yakuza 7? Sweet.
