GunZ: The Duel

Don't know if anyone here's been playing this game, but I've been playing it for the past few hours, and damn, it rocks!

GunZ is a free (or currently in open beta, at least) online 3rd-person action shooter that puts you into the role of a Hong Kong action movie badass. Or for all of you that don't know HK cinema that much, it lets you act out all of your Matrix fantasies.

In short, GunZ has plenty of cool-ass gunplay, swordplay, diving, and even wall-running. You'll always remember your first wall-run kill. :) And you can even Dante someone by launching him up with your sword and firing at him in mid-air all the way down (unless he air-recovers). Kinda hard, though, what with all the other people shooting at ya...

From a game play standpoint, GunZ plays somewhat like Max Payne/Max Payne Kung-Fu without the bullet-time. Another comparison can be made to The Specialists mod for Half-Life, but cranked up to 11. On the console comparison-side, it absolutely smokes Unreal Championship 2 on the XBOX, but maybe that's the HK fan in me talking.

GunZ is set up like an MMORPG. You download the client (137 MB), register an account, log on, and create a Level 1 character. You level up by playing online and capping fools. You also earn bounty for doing so (bounty being the in-game term for money). XP gain is based on you and your opponents' levels. You'll earn more XP by beating people that are at a higher level than you. There are servers where all levels can compete, as well as those geared to a specific level tier (1-5, 6-10, 11-20, etc.). So don't worry about a level 20+ guy coming in with better gear to pick on you--unless you play on an all-levels server.

You start off by picking one of the default character classes. From what I can tell, the difference is in what gear you start with (hint: dual machine guns are cool). You can customize your character's appearance/gender, but there aren't that many visual options. The bounty you earn online is used to buy better weapons, armor, equipment, and other accessories for yourself. However, you can't purchase some items until you reach a certain level. This is done for balance, as all the upgraded weapons and equipment outclass your starting gear. You're also limited to the amount of items you can carry, via finite inventory slots and a weight limit.

I'm still discovering what the differences are in weaponry. I started playing with dual pistols, but found that the dual machine guns were more fun, albeit less accurate. At Level 13, I'm currently limited to smaller scale weaponry. I haven't yet reached a point where I can buy a rocket launcher or something heavy. But heavy weapons prevent you from wall-running, so maybe I won't.

You can also use swords and knives. And you can dual wield swords later on. Swords can be used to dash quickly and deflect/block bullets. Knives are just cheap. :) One commonly used tactic is to use the knife to stun your opponent, then switch to guns and shoot him while he's on the floor recovering. Trust me, you'll get caught by that at least once.

For a beta, what they have so far is really, really fun. It might not look as pretty as UC2, and you might wish there was a bit more polish in some areas. But hey, game play over graphics, right? The system requirements are low, and you can't argue with the price. Highly recommended.

EDIT: To invert mouselook, you need to open up and edit a file in the game directory. Sucks that it's not something you can do in-game (one of those things that falls into the "not quite polished" category).

1 - Open up the game directory, e.g. C:\Program Files\MAIET\Gunz
2 - Open config.xml with Notepad or your favorite text editor
3 - Under <MOUSE> find <INVERT>FALSE</INVERT>
4 - Change it to <INVERT>TRUE</INVERT>
5 - Save the file.
6 - Kick ass.

Here's the main site:

And here are links to two game play trailers:

http://www.gunzonline.com/downloads/gunz_02.wmv

I don't know if I can post the link to the direct .exe download, so just visit the site.

Here are some screenshots. Like I said, it's not going to dethrone Far Cry or anything, BUT IT'S DAMN FUN! Just download it already. :)

I think you might have just sold me on this game. IF it weren't for the fact that I'm at school right now, I'd download it and give it a try. Been hankering for something like Max Payne recently.

Downloading now... is there anyway we can all get in contact with each other and start a rumble?

Can't login and there is no option to invert the mouse... Don't think I'm going to bother with this.

I managed to connect, won the match even though I couldn't aim at anything with non inverted controls. If I could invert my damn mouselook I'd probably like the game somewhat.

Forgot to post this after seeing it in another forum. Sorry.

Also, here are some control tips found after playing for a few hours (and trying to read the load screens as they quickly go by):

When using a gun, to dive forwards, backwards, or sideways, double tap the corresponding direction key (W, S, A, D). You can dive even after doing a jump (space).

When using a sword, to quickly dash forwards, backwards, or sideways, double tap the corresponding direction key (W, S, A, D). You can do a mini "air-dash" after doing a jump (space).

When you dive or dash, you increase your chances of not taking much damage (or something like that). Use your dash to evade those pesky knife-users.

To wall-run straight up, run forwards directly into a wall and hold the jump button. You should start to go up the wall and flip forwards.

To wall-run at an angle, you need to be running and approach the wall at a slight diagonal angle. Hit jump. You should start to do run. If not, try again. :D You can interrupt the run by hitting jump.

Play around and experiment; you'll find yourself easily flipping off of walls and wall-running before you know it. It takes awhile to get used to the timing, but once you get it, it's cool.

To charge up your sword for a super attack (and knife, though I haven't used one yet), hold down the primary attack button (LMB) until the sword's power/glow/whatever finishes building up. The super attack stuns enemies. The charge lasts until you use it; it's a one-shot deal until you charge up again. You can combo the primary sword attack button at least 3 times (maybe more for better weapons?). The secondary sword attack button (RMB) is typically a stun/launch attack. Use it to immoblize your enemy and perforate him with your primary weapon when he's down/launched up in the air.

Deflect all _frontal_ attacks with the guard button (shift). Your animation should change to reflect the guard stance. You can run while guarding to close in on someone. Wait until they need to reload and slice/stun'em.

Quickly switch between your equipped weapons with Q, E, or the mouse wheel.

Reload by hitting R. I've been lucky in the sense that after being taken down with a knife, the opponent's weapon wasn't reloaded, giving me enough time to recover and beat him.

Speaking of which, after being launched, you can supposedly recover in air (I've done it once or twice), but I don't know the timing window.

Flashbangs are fun! They turn your opponent's screen white and then blurry, and even screw up the sound. But I think they affect you, too, if you get caught in the radius (makes sense).

You'll notice that your aiming reticle gets larger and more inaccurate as you fire (at least from mid-range distance and greater). Remember Aliens? 'Short controlled bursts' will do you well, depending on the weapon. I've gotten many a kill/headshot with the dual machine guns using this tactic. Or maybe I just had a better weapon. I dunno. Still figuring out the game and having a blast, silly name and all.

as well as the above is you click the rt mouse button with a sword while falling facing a wall you can stab your sword (dunno about a knife) into the wall to stop from falling. I saw a guy climb a wall doing this but I couldn't time it/

Just a note about that invert thing.

It doesn't actually work. I found that on my own, tried it, doesn't work at all, controls remain non inverted with that value set to True, Yes, 0, 1.

I got disconnected when I was playing earlier and the game refuses to let me on now, is it down or is this just a problem on my end?

The crackdealers are back online, i.e., the GunZ servers are back up.

Schafer, sorry about the invert thing. Other users have claimed it's worked for them.

Anyway, back to the killing... :)

This game is really sucking so far. Been trying to play since like 2 am, gave up around 4 am from some stupid too many users error now for the past hour its can not access server. FUN GAME :lol :lol

Has anyone played GunZ in the past twelve hours? i've tried several times but still can't connect.

The GunZ servers have either been flooded or down since the game's release. The devs underestimated the potential international fanbase and only had 1 server running which didn't support a whole lot of people. Thankfully, the game has since been updated/patched, and there are now 2 servers to (hopefully) handle the load.

Myself, I've logged in after work hours (6PM PST in the Bay Area), and also in the wee hours of the night/morning with no problem--except having to hit the login button several times to 'break through' after getting the message that there are too many users.

It's the Skinner box effect at work. :)

Still, connection problems and all, I've had lots of fun playing this game. My personal experience with the game got exponentially better after meeting and playing with/against some Korean GunZ players who didn't rely on automatics; in team deathmatch, they owned with just the sword and shotgun. To quote The Matrix:

"You move like they do. I've never seen anyone move that fast."

Very cool, and showed me that there's depth beyond 'pray and spray'. I learned a couple of things from playing them.

Of course, in a typical solo deathmatch room full of 15 other players wielding SMGs, those techniques might not work when everyone's simultaneously gunning for you. But they're damn fun to do and it feels good pulling off kills that way.

Ack..stay away.

This game is horrible!

For a free game, it's pretty good.

It's not something I'd ever pay for, though. They should tighten up a few things (balance the weapons!), and in no way is it as good as Action Half-Life or The Specialists so far, but I like the idea behind it all.

I need to play more of it before any final opinion, though.

After some more play:

I love the fairly light RPG aspect of this. This is a really, really cool concept. I'd like an isolated stunt button, to get around the iffy timing on all the wallrunning stuff. You should be able to fully rotate during a dive, the pistol really needs to not suck, and so on, but there's a ton of potential.

(that's if you are not currently occupied)

LoL I got too into the WoW battle feilds and fogot I had this game installed...then I forgot WoW and watched Bullet Proff Monk (dunno why). I'm retarted...lol

This game is cool for a free game. but id never buy it.

with that said....my middle finger hurts from pressing W so much to dash.

its an interesting game tho...its like a 3rd person CS on CRACK and Speed while throwing in RPG elements.

The one thing I find funny about the game tho, is that Unlike almost ALL other Online games.....Whoever has a Shitty ping takes Longer to kill (especially those with the pings in the 1000) and it really makes the game lame waiting for that one person to die so the next round can start.

My friends and I love this game but we cannot get it to work properly on a LAN trying to connect to internet games. If we join separate games we're fine, but if the four or five of us want to fight against other people in the same game, we cannot see each other and we ping 999 to each other. No patch to fix this seems to be coming anytime soon either. :(

thanks to this game, not only did I not get to play this but it prompted me to download DX 9.0c and since then I can't get ANY of my new games to work not Far Cry not Half-Life 2 not CS: Source.

Thank you GunZ.
