Half-Life 3 is reportedly not in development, as ‘Valve focuses on Steam Deck’

It’s claimed that all attention is being placed on games that better fit Valve’s upcoming handheld

Half-Life 3 is not in active development, and Valve is instead focusing on Steam Deck friendly titles, according to a report.

Tylver McVicker of Valve News Network states in a new video that according to his sources, there is no sequel to Half-Life 2: Episode Two currently being developed.

“To get the big question out of the way, is there a true follow-up to Half-Life 2: Episode Two in development in any capacity at Valve Software?” McVicker asks in his new video.

“The end of Half-Life Alyx, for those who haven’t played it heavily, hints towards the continuation of Gordon Freeman’s story.

“The issue is that no, at the current time, there isn’t a major development team working on anything outside of the few pieces of software that are specifically tailored for hardware right now.

“Valve is trying to get the Steam Deck out and, like many people have observed, the Steam Deck has been significantly more successful than originally anticipated, so Valve is throwing a lot at it.

“Half-Life 3, Half-Life 2 Episode 3, any kind of traditional mouse and keyboard FPS at Valve is not taking place, [and] if it its, it’s a very small group of people and those individuals will not be seen as value generating by the higher-ups.”

McVicker claims that Valve is instead working on a separate project called Citadel, which McVicker has been reporting on for some time.

According to him, Citadel’s game mechanics make it a better fit for the Steam Deck, which is why Valve is reportedly focusing on that.

“Valve is working on a piece of software to best showcase what the Steam Deck is capable of doing – Citadel,” McVicker explained.

“This is a nostalgia fest, this is a Half-Life based FPS/RTS hybrid that is co-operatively based. Think about Left 4 Dead and Alien Swarm, and RTS and Half-Life all having a baby.”

Announced in July, Steam Deck is described as “a powerful all-in-one portable PC” capable of running the latest AAA games.

Steam Deck runs the latest version of Valve’s SteamOS software – which is based on Linux – allowing players to access their Steam games library and all the platform’s features.

However, Valve insists Steam Deck is also an open PC with the ability to install any software or connect with any hardware.

Half life 3 and Star Citizen, which will release first?

Yeah your guaranteed to lose your money on that bet no matter which one you pick.

Although to be fair with how much money the Ponzi scheme makes it dousent stop others from betting.

Must be so hard for valve to focus on making a game while making money off every othwr developer /studio……

No way could you develop games and build a platform………. (“cough” Nintendo does, “cough” so does Playstation and Xbox, “cough” so did Sega)

Yes of course, all of Valve's asset designers, source engine coders, story writers, etc. were sent to assembly factories in China to help increase the production output of the Steam Deck.

Valve is all hands on Deck, literally.
My uncle from Valve say that they are actually etching APUs in their home offices.

Valve is ~350 people company.

This is painful, especially when HL2: Episode 2 ended on such a cliff hanger.

- Ok, we need a game to push sales of the Steam Deck. Any suggestions?
- How about Half-Life 3?
- No, we can’t have that. Too keyboard-and-mouse-y.
- Uh, people have been playing FPS games on console for decades and Half-Life is super popular.
- Yes, but we can’t have that because reasons. What else?
- How about a FPS/RTS hybrid game?
- Yes! That’s a perfect fit for controllers. Genius!

Valve sitting on a goldmine of IP, squandering it all.

At least sell this ip, or sub contract to a top tier AAA dev ffs.

And HL3 couldn't be played on the Deck because...? Isn't the entire point that everything (except VR games of course) should work great on it?

The truth is probably closer to there not being any ambition within Valve to tackle something that significant.

What? No, it's a $400 PC, there's going to be stuff that won't "work great" on it the minute it's released.

The Deck's out in a few months, by the time HL3 became a reality that Deck 1 would be a relic in terms of hardware.

That's not how Valve (and a lot of supporters on here) are selling it though.

But of course you're right that it's a device for playing games of the past rather than games of the future. Once we fully transition to "next-gen" the Deck will be completely left in the dust.

The Half Life of Half Life is higher than Uranium.

We'll be playing Half Life 3 whilst the sun engulfs the earth.

Wow. I was really starting to believe that, now that they shipped a real Half Life game, and had a viable engine, tools, and an organized team, that they would be able to keep some of that momentum rolling into a new game.

Speaks a lot to the total organizational dysfunction at Valve. Interest in any one thing is usually fleeting and until it reaches "critical mass" people will just flit over to whatever looks interesting at any given moment.

So they release a VR game to conclude a cliffhanger for a game that released in 2007. Then, they decide to end that game on a cliffhanger, hinting at a potential sequel...

Just, why?

There are two constants in this universe:

Human stupidity & i hope my grandchildren get to play Half Life 3

I think it's pretty understandable. They, literally, have all hands on deck at the moment. Any software developers that could have been working on HL3 are instead doing things like finding and fixing Proton bugs, and developing whatever game they intend to go well with the Deck.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Valve has to be one of the dumbest companies in history. They lucked out releasing steam before competition. They've been mediocrely ran for the better part of a decade. So many missed opportunities.
