Pawns are a bit silly, shoehorned in to give it some basic internet features, which was the style at the time. If you can get past the silly lore reasons for it, they are still fun.
Hopefully the sequel adds elves, dwarves and other races. The internetz demands shortstack gobbos!

I played it on the Deck a couple of months and found the gameplay and combat to be a bit boring.
It could be from the class I chose, though.

I chose to be a mage, i.e. to have the pawns buying time while I summoned a massive meteor rain or electrified whirlwind that swept all enemies at once. This would result in me just standing there waiting for the incantation to end.

The constant need to waste time on inventory management was also a bit of a drag, IMO. I wish they had something akin to Horizon where everything that doesn't fit your pouch goes automatically to your stash.

Holy shit, didn't knew about that. Game's truly genious, and if they keep the same spirit for the sequel is going to be amazing.

It's almost as if they set that up as their goal. :goog_relieved:

Locked at 30fps. Aside from that, I think it's fine.

That's better than the original's 20fps I guess, but it's a shame there's no way to play this at 60 on PS5.

Played through it last year due to hype. Game was decent. Definitely wouldn't dethrone any of the Soulsborn games. Didn't bother with the DLC due to the grindy nature.

Dont understand all the whining. People forgot what year it was when this was released. Its one of the best ARPGs of all time. The combat puts witcher 3 to shame.

The only thing that held this game back somewhat at launch was the fast travel system, which required an item you could only find a limited amount of times, meaning if you ran out you couldn't fast travel any more

I think this has since been fixed though, as you can now get a ferrystone with unlimited uses, man that was annoying though

Being more critical and not blinded by everything one likes =/= not liking games. Its so boring to say wow a game is so perfect so awesome, like srsly? There is no such thing. Everything is flawed, that is the nature of all things. I have criticized even my favorite games of all time. I can spend hours telling you about the negatives of Witcher 3 or Divinity Original Sin 2. People should know about the negatives more than positives. Let them discover the good things, and warn them about the not so good things.
so offensive when the guy was joking...

It’s a classically flawed game of great ideas but execution that fails to live up to them imo. The world feels totally dead. I’m looking forward to a sequel.

That's because it is lol, everything outside of villages/towns is basically a hellscape; walking around at night as a regular person means even the ground you walk on isn't save since undead could rise from it and rip you to shreds.
This isn't some happy middle earth world, it's something far more sadistic than that for - spoiler- reasons.

Dragon’s Dogma is the only game to date that I platinumed on one console, and then got 100% achievements on the competitor’s console. Because why not.

I did not platinum it on the PS4 remaster, though I’m thinking about it…

For folks who hate the combat, I honestly am baffled. You can make yourself Legolas and literally climb giant beasts for fun. Or you can charge up a shot and release to do insane damage to a cyclops by hitting it directly in the eye ball and watch it literally grab its face in pain because of it.

Or maybe you want to pretend you’re Guts and charge up a giant ass sword, and ragdoll griffons into the ground with a perfectly timed attack.

Maybe you want to summon meteors and giant tornadoes and fling your enemies hundreds of feet into the air and watch them die from fall damage.

But hey. What do I know.

I don’t know why I stopped play it way back when. Maybe I thought the story and characters weren’t strong enough to carry the game and just lost interest? Can’t quite remember - was there a lot of backtracking? I did get a thrill from climbing that first beastie - I remember thinking, ‘oh, okay, this is cool’.

The only reason I haven’t bought it on PC or PS4/PS5 is the Berserk crossover from the PS3/360 era isn’t in those versions.

Glad you enjoy it.
Personally i didn't like it, that game was a disappointment to me, I remember i was very excited when i bought it, it was around 2018 if im not mistaken, heard all the praise for years and decided to finally give it a shot.
At the first like 5 hours i was having fun, i liked how the night system works, dungeons felt interesting and grand in scale, the combat looked flashy and the character creation system was amazing.
Few hours later after the prologue is finished i started feeling the fatigue, as soon as i went out of the first village i started noticing things i didnt like.
Environments that looks bland and lifeless, there's few visual details or visual awe in the world, its so basic and bland it basically looked like an mmo i played in high school days, ambience is forgettable (except at night), i dont particularly have any memories of any sounds or music maybe because i didnt play it for too long lol.
I found exploring the world very tedious, aside from the visuals and the sounds, what started bothering me after i left the city is that monsters keep respawning, there was a quest where i have to do some escort and harpey attack it, its so repetitive and boring. You reach a town along the way, fight a boss and eventually i reached the city, there you pick up quests and do a variety of things. What bothered me there was that backtracking to other cities is also a tedious act, you have stamina and when you run it consumes them, basically i found traversal boring and tedious, there was no mount and no fast travel so i was stuck with running around from city to city which takes quite the time and stamina needs to be refilled and its easily depleted which annoyed me, even worse is that enemies respawn and your pawns never shut up, so its all repetitive and repetitive.
The combat has depth for sure, and magic in the game feels awesome to cast but also i found it floaty and lacks feedback, when you land a hit, there's no dismemberment or gore, its like you are hitting a spoonge, idk mechanically its alright, you can spam your button over and over for flashy attacks, and the depth in skills and classes is great but the feel of it isn't there.
And last of all i found the quests and the stories in general to be bad, dialogue, characters and presentation wise.

I kept pushing for like 30-35 hours, until i stopped playing, i think i vastly prefer Souls style over it. I think good combat can have some subjectivity into it, like for me, Elden Ring combat demolishes it, but for many others in this thread Dragon's Dogma has better combat so idk, for me a combat system with flashy moves where you do cool acrobatic moves and style on enemies is not enough to put it over a methodical weighty combat system that feels grounded and real.
I dont deny that its combat is overall good though, i just dont think its the best thing ever.

So to conclude i didnt like the game sadly, for reasons above and more, but i am excited to try out the sequel, i think with some polish and after adjusting some of the game design choices this franchise could turn out great. I hope they dont just focus on combat, because this is one of the games that convinced me, combat alone can't carry open world games, they need to put some work in other areas too, otherwise it will be another mediocrity.

Uh I know some people really love this game but I thought it was merely "alright" - honestly a pretty odd and kinda janky game.

This thread made me reinstall the game and try out some ENBs. Those can make the game look almost like a remaster but man, do they hinder performance specially at 4K. :goog_relieved:

If anyone is interested, out of those I've tried my favorite one is Rudy's ENB. It's the one from the pics I posted earlier in this thread.

Great game.
I always considered it a spiritual succesor to the Capcom D&D arcade games and considering that some of the menu sounds of the arcade games are in Dragons Dogma I think Capcom does too.

I don't think they mean just that. The overworld is pretty lifeless and meh.

I love the game, but I mostly spent my time at Bitterblack Isle enjoying the combat scenarios and leveling my characters.

The world itself is only as interesting as you're willing to put into it. For example, there are a lot of sidequests(not board stuff) and 'soft decisions' that the game never tells you about or explain to you, so you may miss out on a ton of stuff and never be the wiser. It's like the bullshit Souls games pull sometimes with their NPCs, where you may miss out on items or entire scenarios because the game didn't tell you about the branching paths that the character or story arc can have.

It's also really cool to explore the areas, exploring, having night catch up with you, and fighting for your life. If you're at a proper level or know what you're doing though, then it can just be annoying at points.

I think more cities and variety in locations and creatures were needed, the world size is super small. The gameplay itself is fantastic, and I don't think I've played an AI partner system I've liked more, especially with a customisable buddy(who aren't completely braindead or useless and have quirks for them to grow with you as a player) AND customisable main. Maybe you get to customise your main, but you're definitely getting some pre-designed AI partner shoved unto you.

I love Souls games, but I just found DD more fun to play and enjoy.

I love how night is handled in this game, being almost pitch black at times. One of my fondest memories about playing DD was strolling through a forest at night, and suddenly spotting the glowing eyes of a chimera right in front of me, barely a few metters a way.

bought it on offer due to the hype years ago and actually had the opposite reaction..I was all "that's it?"
most of the moves are useless, the climbing on enemies mechanic is clunky as hell, the enemies AI or aggressiveness just isn't there

I keep repeating myself that I will go back to it with fresh eyes, since apparently the dlc is way better than base game, but I never did.

the pawn mechanic would have ben inteesting if the community around this game was WAY bigger

Marketing and advertising is everything

If people don't know the product exists, it won't sell until they do. No matter how good the product is

Even if the product is bad, if enough people hear about it or see a cool cinematic trailer for it during their favorite TV show, the product will sell

Never actually tried installing any actual mods, sorry. ENBs are different than normal mods, and installing ENBs is as simple as putting some files on the game's folder.

If you want, try that one I posted earlier. There's a readme file in the .zip that explains everything. Trust me, it couldn't be easier.

The game truly shines in NG+ and beyond. I finally convinced a friend to play it this past year and right away he hit me with a “Bro, I already love this more than Skyrim”.

You made a great choice.Dragons Dogma is the best third person RPG on this planet. No Zelda comes close to this game the second if they follow the first and improve and make it more content bigger will be the absolute best !

The world itself is only as interesting as you're willing to put into it.
With that kind of reasoning you'll see the same kinds of worlds over and over again, "interesting" is subjective; the DD world is extremely dangerous and deadly, only a brave few live outside of villages or towns, because even if it's not monsters who will kill you, it's other humans (bandits), and then it somehow gets even more dangerous and depressing after a certain point in the story; I think it's plenty interesting.

For example, there are a lot of sidequests(not board stuff) and 'soft decisions' that the game never tells you about or explain to you, so you may miss out on a ton of stuff and never be the wiser
This is by design though, as I mentioned in my earlier post; playing through the game over and over again is what they want you to do.

Those are all mobs, and fighting mobs isn't the core issue with the overworld being '(un)interesting'. Like I said, the combat itself is fantastic, anything to do with that is going to be great, outside of that though...

"This is by design though, as I mentioned in my earlier post; playing through the game over and over again is what they want you to do."

Yes, and a lot of people will miss things. I wonder how many people even saw the queen's final mission area without a guide. The people who actually find it will be pleased, but I'm betting a lot simply missed it, stuck with the main story, and missed out on some good content.

make sure the pudding isn't too soggy but that just ruins everything
My only complaint about this game is that it never got a performance patch for PS5.

I still hold out hope.

took some time to click with me (kind of has that budget game feel/look), but ended up really liking it.
love how the spells are big and beefy.

definitely prefer souls though.

It's amazing. I revisited it a few months ago but remembered why I stopped playing back when it first released.

It's just too overwhelming and time consuming. Not necessarily a bad thing but I just don't have the attention span/dedication it requires.

I am really stoked for the sequel though. Online campaign coop could easily make it one of the greatest of all time.

said fuck it few days ago and grabbed it on steam
been playing none stop for the past three days and it's been a damn blast, this has to be the best Combat in an RPG ever right? i don't even know how i'll get back to souls games after this
also, absolutely love the pawn system lol, i could see myself playing this for a long time
the plot is extremely interseting too so far
the only thing i wish for is the world to be more open, other than that, this is so good
Pawn system is so good. They really make it entertaining with the dumb stuff they do and say.

One of the best games of X360/PS3 era. Still boggles the mind that no one to this day copied pawn system and ability to grab and climb on huge enemies, bosses and kill them that way (I'm looking at you, From!:lollipop_pouting:).
Grabbing and climbing will not gel with from games. They are better off the way they are. Same moveset against every enemy. Only your reflex matters.

I only played the demo way back during the 360 days. Didn't know what I was doing. Had solid graphics. I think one of the fights you do is against a griffin in the demo and I couldnt figure out how to do shit as it kept flying around. lol

kick the oxen, it goes faster.
If you stand in front of the ox, and kick it, you take damage. Then you can stand in front of the ox again, and when your pawn casts its heal spell on you, it'll heal both you and the ox so you can keep kicking the ox without worrying about it's hp
