Horizon Forbidden West: Review Thread |

The good

  • Utterly breathtaking visuals
  • Fantastic worldbuilding
  • Chock full of three dimensional characters
  • Lance Reddick should play Thrawn

The bad

  • The traversal is singular in its solutions.
  • The combat is too easily optimised.
  • There’s a distinct lack of polish that I’m accustomed to from Sony first-party titles
  • The Focus is too quick to dictate your next move
Some very poor points to give it a 6.5 tbh. After all the work Guerrilla Games put into this game compared to many other games, anything less than a 9 is straight up disrespect to the talented developers.

Distinct lack of polish expected from a sony 1st party title?

What? Are we awarding review scores based on how much we respect the developers or how much work they put into it?

Edit: Also, what the fuck is up with the petty "omg, this random guy scored HALO better than HFW??!?? SHILL" comments? Be happy that you're getting an amazing game and accept that some reviewers might have different tastes than yours.
So your saying H:FW is a 6.5 game?
WTF

I just want to know if they made traversal better. Are there still invisible walls and things you can’t climb? I just can’t go back to that shit after BOTW, Halo Infinite and Dying Light 2 all with amazing mobility.

If all they did is add a glider and there are still invisible walls and no good way to climb things then I’m out.

leads to fear. Fear leads to xbox.
It's not a meltdown.
This goes for all platforms.
The review system is broken.

You should review a game based on: Story, Gameplay, Graphics, Performance, in game content, etc.

There needs to be a standard review system, like how ESRB rate games.
Out of all comments I agree with this across the board for games, to man y times reviwers inject their "feelings" into their reviews. Im not there to read how it made you feel etc. I want facts based on certain criteria across the board for all games when it comes to those 5 topics

I'm still trying to figure out what the hell happened to reviews on The Ascent. Sometimes people are morons. It's not a 6.5 game, but shit happens.

But acting like anything below a 9 is insulting is going way too far. Lots of sites use a 5 star system by the way, and so an 80 is the highest they give anything other than perfect scores. And it definitely sounds like this isn't a perfect game.

Any reason on the story embargo that eurogamer mentions ?

Probably because it involves spoiling plot points or a new tribe.

If it makes it any better the complaints amount to “military propaganda” and “problematic culture appropriation” so far.

Some of these people reviewing games are insane, get a fucking life. It would all feel better if we didn’t know most of the reviewers actually suck at games if the videos of them playing are anything to go by.

The story criticisms are the real bummer here, which is wild given that SONY first party is known for being able to marry fantastic graphics with a great story.

It's a constant on Sony games, paid shills lower the scores just to hurt MC score. It's nasty.

. . . they're paid, to knock down a title. What, are the the Nawlins Saints?

I rate games by the amount of work developers put into games.
Clearly there is a lot of work out into this game compared to other games.

When you give H:XD a 8.0, how can you also give this a 8.0?
It makes zero sense when you think about it.

It's clear bias review.

he uses double standards for playstation and xbox games. there is no problem to call people like this out.

Just looking for something to complain about. People do it all the time even though they haven’t played the game yet.

“The meta score could’ve been two points higher if it wasn’t for that review”. Yeah, and it wouldn’t have affected your enjoyment of the game at all clown.

Well I'm glad you don' t decide how all reviews are made then, because the workload just increases over time for bigger titles. So by now, compared to the NES when I started playing, every game would just be a 10/10 and reviews would be essentially scoreless.

And like other people have said, there seems to be some early consensus that the story in this game has issues. The first game seems to have a more popular story. So different games can be good in some areas and bad in others. And sentiments change over 5 years as well. This game has similar platforming and stealth to Uncharted, and that's becoming more common in Sony games these days, and is a little more likely to be criticized than 5 years ago. And obviously different people review the games at the same site.

The complaints are about the main plot. The quests themselves, character quests, are getting praised left and right.

Most great games of the kind have great sidquests and character moments, with a very average main plot.

It’s not an origin story, and unlike a GoW or a TLoU2, it’s an open world game. It’s par for the course.

Some of these reviewers clearly stuck to the main line, and lost a lot of experience in the meanwhile.

I'm avoiding any of these reviews as I'm working my way through the story in the first so I'll say I hope they're right. Still the main story being not as good as the first, and the side content being better feels like a flip of the first.

Can't wait! Just ordered a copy. Got unused leave I need to take too, and I've been waiting for a good gaming fix.
This and Elden Ring in the space of a week, what a time to be alive!

It’s normal, in the first game you are discovering the world through the main character, in the second you are discovering the world through other characters.

It’s how it goes. Like Witcher 3. Sequels must become much more character driven, about their struggles, and in an rpg that means side quests.

By not being as good they mean the mystique from the first game is gone and that automatically knocks the story down

Same could be said of the Matrix sequels. When you set up a big reveal, it takes a lot of foresight to also set up an equally compelling second act.

A sequel isn’t a second act, it’s just a new arc. But there are only so many arcs one character can have, which is why every sequel to an original Batman becomes about the other characters.

With an origin you define the role of a main character in the world they are set in, establishing the rules of a new world. You can’t go down that well again, which is why the matrix sequels struggled IMO.

A lot of reviewers were mad Sony didn't let them spoil THAT TLOU2 spoiler as well.
Can you imagine reading reviews and casually reading all reviewers going like

oh btw, you're getting 2 games in one. you'll get both perspectives and 2 different main characters with a completely new set of weapons and moves

I'd be pissed. One thing about TLOU2 that i loved was how i didn't know any of that. And what a ride it was.

Watching reviewers getting frustrated for not being able to spoil things in games is why i don't read them.

A lot of other reviewers rave about the story. Doesn't mean they are right, but it means it's worth it to find out for yourself, rather than go in with pessimistic mood. It could go absolutely either way.
Personally, I don't quite expect shakespearean drama, so the comments about story going wild places arethe most interesting. Just surprise me a little, obviously I'm not getting Ibsen here.

I haven’t read any story stuff so I can avoid spoilers, but is it really a surprise if the story isn’t too great? It wasn’t that good in the first one. Imho the cool AR collectibles you could find were the coolest part of the story/lore. And the side quests and NPC’s, sweet Jesus. They were terrible.

To me the first game was visual Dino destruction porn with an average FarCry game underneath. I’m fine if the sequel is more of that. With combat enhancements, of course.

GG has always had trouble telling stories look at killzone etc, they need to hire a better writer for their next game

Ahhh... Stevivor, eh?

From the minds that gave us "Demon's Souls, Bloodborne, Ghost of Tsushima, HZD, Uncharted Legacy, and Returnal are all 7."

Meanwhile, Cyberpunk got a 9.5.
Cyberpunk and MGSV was the biggest wake ip call thats reviewers are shills for their own clout. In no way shape or form should cyberpunk and MGSV got such high scores as it did.

The fact that complete games that dont suffer the same performance issues as those games yet they have lower scores is daunting and shows how the current rating system/reviews is fraudulent

People's meltdowns over a 6.5...never change Gaf.
Besides the overreactions I think the point is legit.
Review system is laughable. Everyone can influence the score with a clickbait score to get traffic.
Shills can give 10/10 to the games running on the favorite console and 6.5/10 to games running on their not so favorite console.
The whole thing is a joke.

Just a few days ago a great game like Sifu was punished because of its difficulty.
Next week we'll see Elden Ring with the same non-accessibility scoring 9/10 and 10/10 everywhere because it's From Software and being multiplatform we won't have people trying to drag the score down.
It's a joke.

Another banger, as was expected. Cant wait to platinum this bad boy. I wonder if horizon takes a long break now?
Yeah the first was an easy plat, this one looks like it will be a joy as well. I bet this game sets up a third. Horizon seems to be guerillas main thing now that killzone is dead
