How did you feel when you got fired from a job?

The last two jobs I have were really shitty (assembly line worker and working at a medical clinic) , after I got fired from assembly like one ,I was in a panic since I had no other income and desperately went looking for a job. A year later I was fired from the medical clinic one and that I felt so relieved (by that point my VA benefits kicked in so I wasn't even sure why I stayed as long as I did, I kind of regret not quitting the moment I got my VA). Both jobs were horrible for my health (standing up all day when you're legs are screwed up is not pleasant and too much work drama and shit). I am very happy I never have to deal with other people in a work setting ever again.

I got fired from my first job at a grocery store for stealing a soda out of the coldbox. I only felt stupid. I've never been fired from any other job since. But if I were in a shitty position like you I'd feel a mixture of relief and panic if I didn't have a fallback plan.

The only time i got "fired" was as an apprentice where i couldn't fulfill the expectations of my first boss who had insane expectations.

I felt relieved!

Relieved because i couldn't stand all that pressure anymore, especially of my young age. I never had such a situation anymore afterwards and could always satisfy my employer.

I've only been technically fired from one job, I was working as a temp in a call center and it was shit. So I was joking around with one of the cute girls that was working there to alleviate the boredom. Some Karen overheard me, got offended by a joke I made and complained to the manager. Manager comes over to give me shit, and my natural instinct is to talk myself out of shit. But half way through when it was working I thought to myself "Why am I trying to keep this shitty temp job that I hate?"

So I just

Got fired, happy to be out of there. I go to my agency to explain what happened and the call centre manager had told them a whole bunch of lies that had absolutely nothing to do with what had happened that I didn't even do. So I got blacklisted from that agency.

I just walked right across the road and signed up with another agency, but I stipulated "No Call Centre work!". Turns out it was a better agency with good clients and better pay. So that was a win.

I've been let go from two. One was a grocery store job in my early twenties. Gave me the kick I needed to go back to school and finish my degree. I was offered a choice between moving into an HR role managing offshore relationships or a stock and severance buyout from a middle management job at a software company that was restructuring. I took the buyout and they paid me six figures to resign Took their money and got much less stressful job somewhere else.

I HAVE been laid off

That's just the norm these days, I always expect it and it usually happens no matter how good you are at the job or how perfect your work record. Unless you get into upper management and that offers some level of protection as they cull the lowest workers first. Even though logically they should cut higher paid managers to save money and keep the company workflow higher.

I suppose so. In this case, it was because the company was going out of business. So it really didn't feel personal. Everyone was laid off
There used to be a time when laid off meant that when conditions improved people would be called back to their jobs. It certainly doesn't mean that any more. Nowadays companies use it as a way to clean people out then look for cheaper workers when they start up again.

First attempt at grad school. Was “fired” because I couldn’t keep up a 4.0 GPA, manage to help teach 3 classes, while doing my own research. By the way, they had me do 22 credit hours. Of graduate level courses. I did not feel sad in the slightest. I felt relieved to be out of such a toxic environment where I earned less than the average worker.

I had to find a rental property with 3 other people and this wasn’t in a major city. Rent for me cost 300 dollars a month and I *still* could barely afford to live with the little I was given in form of a stipend.

Laid off is still fired. It's just a nicer way of saying it.

If that counts I have many stories then. I guess cliff notes required.

Got an internal promotion, was promised a pay rise after 3 months. 3 months became 7 months and me constantly asking where my rise was. Then they laid me off when they relocated to another office and hired someone else to do my job. Redundancy payment based on my original salary not the rise I was promised. Feels: Pissed off.

Worked for a company that changed direction so cut a lot of staff, got a big cheque at the end as well as forward payment of the bonuses I would have been due if I'd worked to the end of the year. I only worked there 10 months. Feels: Lots of money, not pissed off.

Corporate company, staffed up way too quickly so had to cut a lot of staff. They did this selection "fairly" on a spreadsheet where each metric had a rating out of ten, if you scored over 80 you kept your job. I got 78, but when I looked through I asked how I could have only got 7 for attendance when I hadn't had a day off or been sick? That should be 10 right? "Everybody got 7" she said, which I called bullshit on because then it's a useless metric.
Job was boring anyway and the redundancy cheque was not bad, they asked if I had a company mobile phone (If they ask it means they don't know). I said no, kept the phone ran up a huge, huge bill on it until they cut it off.

Also because I pretty much knew due to my low position I'd get cut. However you didn't know for sure until you were called up to HR and then immediately escorted off the premises due to having access to sensitive data. So I preemptively took every document I worked on and put it in an encrypted file so they could not use my work if I left and if I stayed I could undo it. I heard from a former collegue that my former department manager was fucking furious when she found out and as more than one week had passed all the backup tapes had been cycled and they could not restore those files from a backup. Feels: Revenge is sweet.

I can add more later.

That's not even all of it..

Had a job that lasted 4 years I think, I only knew I was safe when active development started on the next project by May of that year. Towards the end of one year I'd heard not chatter about the next project so I bailed out in December for a company that I'd been moonlighting at. Just two months later the whole development team was made redundant and no more future iteration of that project were made. Feels: Dodging bullets like Neo

That next job only lasted a couple of years because the owner ran it into the ground, ignored advice, didn't pivot and just blamed "Market conditions". But as I'd made it to upper management I was saved until the very end even though there was nothing to work on and there was only a skeleton crew left in the place. At least he hooked me up with a job with one of his friends companies though, half the salary but with free accommodation so not that bad. Feels: We told you so, but thrown a lifeline.

The following job, I did get headhunted from, but I'd seen the owner find all reasons not to pay the final months salary to people who left or make them do additional work before he'd pay them the final salary AND if I left I'd forfeit any commission that I'd earned if I left before the end of the year. I could have left in October. Not only that but I was the only person that was arranging the booth at the CES show and I wanted to see that through as it was a good achievement to have on a resume and it meant I got a free trip to the USA, Vegas and to go shopping. I just abandoned that job after the CES show from the start of the Chinese new year holiday and my final salary got processed because they didn't know I'd walked out on them. Feels: Fucking you before you have a chance to fuck me.

The following job, paid double but I was doing the work of at least 3 people because they were too cheap to hire extra staff. Already planning an exit strategy I'd passed two interviews already by December expecting an offer in January. Except, I get called into a meeting at the start of January with the director and let got because of hard times the company was having or something. I'd stopped giving a shit about whatever reasons were given at this point. I knew I had a job lined up anyway, so I was gracious and professional and "Thank you for the opportunity, it's just business no hard feelings". I think because I took it so well, they did give me an additional months salary and a bonus that I'd have been due in 6 months. I walked straight into that next job with money I'd not have if I'd have just resigned a week later. Feels: Playing the game like a boss

Next job, exactly the fucking same, one year, January you're out. But I was working remotely, so they got the accountant to call me because the owner was too much of a pussy to do it himself. Then he asked the question "Do you have any company property?", if they ask it means they don't know and I remembered I'd got that company phone years back so I said no.
2 new laptops, high end monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse, good headphones, printer, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, smartphone basically a whole new office worth of stuff
anyway had another job lined up because you always get fucked in January and you'd be stupid not to expect it. Feels: Made out like a bandit

Basically, every job after has been the same. Never actually fired, not for bad behaviour, poor performance, unreliability or doing anything that would get you fired.

But companies still pull the "We're like family" and "Reward loyalty" and it's just complete bollocks and then complain they cant retain staff and young people today don't have a decent work ethic.

Got fired from Walmart.

Was good because I collected unemployment for 6 months, worked long enough to get my full 401k (was fully vested) and yeah that company is terrible aside from their 401k lol.

Basically I got so fed up with BS I told the manager to fire me without really saying it, was so done at that point.

Never been fired, but the closest was at a pretty bad company where my direct supervisor was a constantly rotating seat of middle managers getting fired and their boss was a VP who was just on permanent PMS and a grade A bitch. I had 4 different supervisors within one year. It was a technical position, like senior technical support, but it was all internal and sister company support, not like a call center.. One of the marketing people wanted me to come help them with something, which was not at all a high priority task, and we always had work waiting on us, constantly being stretched thin and overworked. So I left for lunch, thinking I would get to it when I got back.

When I came back from lunch, my supervisor came to tell me the VP was pissed and that he had to run interference. They sent a department wide message implying that we had to finish pending jobs before taking lunch. I gave them my notice shortly thereafter. I think I would have probably been fired soon if I didn't resign, but I was the SME for the product that brought in 60+% of total revenue for the company, so they had to work with me some.

I was sad when I left, because I had done quite a lot at that company and had been very good at my job, but management was a disaster. Worse was this was the start of 2008, and while I thought I had a job lined up when I left, as any of you who were looking at the time, the job market was completely dead that year with the crash. So I had to apply to hundreds of companies before I managed to get another job.

never been fired. closest would be having a temp job (about 10 years ago) and being fed bullshit about how i'd "very likely" be hired permanently. that obviously didn't happen and i know i shouldn't have got my hopes up. at that point that job meant the world to me even though it was shit really. i felt so disappointed, defeated, and scared. but after a few months i got an even better job (that i'm still in!) so it was really for the best :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Never got fired and current job has a no layoff clause so all good. Work environment is really chill. We used to be allowed to drink at work until 2018. I even had sent a dick pic to my old female boss and that's how we became friendsies.

It felt very shitty, though it was more of a mass layoff than a direct firing. That said i had been wanting to leave so it gave me the push i needed and what i did after that was much more enjoyable. I do appreciate and value the time & exp from that first “professional” level job though

Worked a call centre years back, lasted about a year but 3 months in I already didnt give a shit. That thing was huge and we had to work 10 hour shifts 6 days a week, sometimes in the AM and sometimes overnight. I loved the overnight shift because it was just me and my nintendo DS. I would unplug the phones past 12am and play games/browse the web.

The other shifts? Not so much. You had 2 bathroom breaks a day, and lunch time was counted to the minute, every minute you were late was docked off your pay. The supervisors were assholes and the manager was an old lady that might as well be satan himself.

Eventually found an exploit where I could receive "cold calls" or calls that disconnected halfway through but the system still picked them up as regular calls so I would abuse this to skip work. If youve worked a call centre you know you get a call literally every 20 seconds. This lasted for about 6 months with me just pretending to work most of the time but in reality doing fuck all a good portion of the time.

The way they treated people was horrible and looking back it was pretty sad to see people with families struggling to get to month end and working 6 days a week for $300. I still lived at home at the time so didnt have that added pressure.

Eventually they found my glitch and listened to a fuck ton of recordings of my calls that were just silence, by the end I had gotten to a point I didn't give a shit anymore so when they starting asking me which of my fellow workers knew about the exploit and started threatening with firing me I told the manager:

Im not gonna say anything, if you want to fire me go ahead, I dont give a shit and I don't need this shitty job. The look on her face was priceless, like someone who's not used to hear talk back at all and just abuses people that are down financially. She was just taken aback, I walked out the room and didn't bother coming back.

Got my severance a couple weeks later. Decided right there and then that I would never work a shit job again and that I was gonna make it by myself. Went to uni, met awesome people, including my wife. Graduated and had a couple decent jobs after but decided to go on by myself and become independent.

Tl;dr: teen rage made me escape the rat race.

Considering my boss was an asshole, and the HR lady liked to treat us all like retards every day, I felt fine. Was about a week away from straight up quitting anyway. They got super mad when I wouldn’t pay attention to them during the termination meeting. Felt good when I gave them the double bird and walked out. Felt even better three months later when I learned from other employees that the boss man basically ranked the entire business because he was an incompetent ass.

I got laid off when I was 30 when my company lost a contract. I felt resentful and rejected, but it turns out it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. I learned that I was always expendable, and at the next job to push myself even harder to make sure I wasn’t that guy who got picked to be let go. I learned to value myself. I learned how political certain jobs can be and how to deal with varying personalities in business.

If you look at it as an opportunity and not a loss I believe you can make good things come of it.

I’ve been fired twice. Once because I was truly incompetent, immature, and simply not ready for that kind of position. Second time I was fired it because it looked like I was participating in a restaurant scam when I truly wasn’t. Both times I felt like complete shit (especially the first time), but honestly both incidents led me to a better place where I am today. The key is to learn from your mistakes, keep trying, and go back to school if you have to lol

I've only been fired once. It sucked but I honestly hated the job.

When I started we were working 5 days a week 10 hour days.
Then the project fell behind and they opened up optional over time on Saturdays. Two weeks later that optional over time became mandatory, except they didn't tell anyone. Most guys were ok working Saturdays but I specifically took the job for the 5 day work week and didn't work those days. So they fired me for missing scheduled work days that I thought were optional.

mostly been let go due to company down size or things along that line. only ever been fired twice in my life. first time was when I was a lot younger and working in a pizza place. was doing some shady side deals at the time so was fired after they found out. felt shitty but it's my own fault so in my heart I know I deserve it, even thou I did still fight for it.

second time was more of an interesting story. the owner of the company I was working for at the time got a divorce and his wife went and opened up another company in the same line of work and brought a few senior workers from his company with her. I ran into one of them at the post office and ended up going to their company to chat with the people there for a little. they even tried to get me to switch over but I wasn't all that motivated to do that, so I just told them that and left after some chit chat. 2 months later, the owner called me into his office and talked to me, asking me if I had been to the other company's office. I told him yes, and he said they have to let me go because they can't trust me any more. at that point I had worked for them for a little over a year and I had already paid off all my debts, had a little saving, plus I was getting a little worn out anyway, so I didn't really care about losing the job. in fact, since it was around May or so at that time, I was planning to just chill the whole summer and have a good time before start job hunting after that. but a week later the other company's people called me and said they heard about it and asked me to go work for them. ended up taking the offer and worked there for about 8 years or so.

I was legit fired only once: I was a temp at some company and they decided not to renew the contract. The manager informing me was completely gutted, don't think he ever had to fire someone before. Poor guy just felt so bad, lol.

So there I was, just heard I lost my job and this guy is such a wreck that at the end of the conversation I had to ask HIM if he was gonna be okay.

Technically not fired, just gaslit into believing I was shit and left based on that. I worked in a grocery store deli and they were always complaining about every little thing so I asked to switch to night shift as a stocker. I figured it would be better because I could just get my work done solo and there would be nothing to complain about. Only problem was that since I was able to work the cash register they had me stocking the aisles and also handling every single customer that came through since it was a 24 hour store. Coworkers I worked with commented on how fast I worked when they saw me working, and the only feedback I ever got from my manager was that I should make the boxes neater on the shelf, which takes more time but I took that feedback.

For a couple weeks I saw my manager angrily pacing by my aisle and shaking his head but he never said a word to me. Then one day all the sudden I get called into a meeting with him and the store manager. They told me I wasn’t making my quota (which had never been explained at all) and maybe they could retrain me but it wasn’t looking good. I was devastated because I was a kid and I took pride in my shitty job and just wanted to be told I was doing a good job just once. I stammered out that I had to work the register too and surely that should change what my quota was, but my direct manager just shook his head and said no, even with that I still wasn’t working hard enough. The store manager said whenever he saw me it didn’t look like I was working hard.

Knowing what I know now, I realize they actually had no idea what I did there and how hard I worked so I didn’t need to let it affect my self esteem but at the time I was crushed. I went and found the cool manager and let him know I wasn’t going to come back and he told me he always thought I worked hard which meant a lot to me. So I guess it was a good life experience, and I know now I don’t have to rely on jerkoff managers for validation.

Any job I've been fired from were jobs where I checked out long ago and was just riding them out for money/holidays. Except for that one job where I got fired for sleeping with a guest but that's a whole different story.

Go on.....
I used to work as a Night Porter/Security for a Hotel, had the job for just over a year, a party of women celebrating something were staying one weekend but all had separate rooms, most were flirty with me but one managed to get me into her room. Apparently that's not allowed. Still consider it the best reason for being fired though.

The only time I've been fired was when I worked at a gas station in my early 20's and was robbed. The company felt I should have refused to give the full register of cash (about $150) and tried to trick them by giving them $50 and hoping they wouldn't harm me or the other people in the gas station. I chose to give them what they wanted to get them out and keep people safe. My boss refused to fire me so the regional manager had to come down and do it. I didn't feel bad at all since that was a completely terrible thing to do to someone who was robbed doing their job.
