I think it's time for me to say NO to drugs: The drugs of internet addiction.

This might not help you at all, but I find having a large physical calendar helps me see the big picture of where I'm supposed to be, and that helps me prioritize things. I write deadlines and other plans on it. I find it easier not to go too deep into something entertaining when I have my whole week or month of important things in mind.

When I was younger, I was big on Facebook and would chase the tail of these local chicks who were quite popular on social media in my area. Like hundreds of likes on each pic sorta deal.

Getting to know them, they were all horridly vapid and most spent the majority of their time smoking weed and staring at their phones.

We've kinda created this illusion that there's so much more to life than there really is. Most of us are painfully average and boring. There are so many worse ways to spend your free time than haunting GAF, playing Steam games, or browsing WikiFeet imho.

If you're feeling a lack of achievement, then write down little goals for yourself in a notebook every day and make a game out of it to see how may you can tackle in a day. Move the ones you dont get to over to the next day, add a few more, repeat.

I have an addictive personality too. It's why I can't keep junk food in my house, have gone completely sober, and have been labeled as "no fun" by a lot of people lately. Truthfully, I can't handle fun. I'm a freak about it. Sometimes you can get hooked on abstaining from things too and that's also dangerous

Life is about balance or whatever

Nokia 8210 for life. Though my internet usage would probably get switched over to playing Snake.

GPS and music streaming alone would make me hesitant to ever switch over to a "dumb phone". The awesome cameras come in handy too.

Smartphones are far more beneficial than they are harmful

I remember when I went to holiday back in the day and just reading books or magazines. And getting bored, letting your mind wander around, start doing weird shit to find something to do.

Then, a few years ago I went to the Garda lake in northern Italy with my car on my own for a few days, and then I was just staring on my phone, chatting with people like I always do and browsing GAF.

I could have just stayed at home and do the same thing.

It's one of those things that seems nice in concept but you'd quickly realize how bad it sucks in real world usage. The ability to look up information anywhere is incredibly handy. I'm guess I'm lucky though as I grew up with computers pre-internet and I never really caught on to any of the social platform waves with the exception of message boards. Never had a myspace, facebook or the litany of current platforms. I guess I do have a twitter but 99% of that usage is just following Wario for gaming deals.

Yep, the worst part of the internet is social media and in the last years “news” websites too. If you stay away from those its already a lot better.

Uh huh, yeah.. wait what did you say?

I remember interviewing candidates in the early 2000s with my boss and he would be glued to his Blackberry (speaking of rad phone games, BrickBreaker!). That's just some rude as shit. Thank the lord for my southern politeness.

“Now, again, I beheld the condition of the dog and toad, and counted the state of every thing that God had made far better than this dreadful state of mine and my companions. Yea, gladly would I have been in the condition of a dog or horse, for I knew they had no soul to perish under the everlasting weight of hell or sin, as mine was like to do. Nay, and though I saw this, felt this, and was broken to pieces with it, yet that which added to my sorrow was, that, I could not find that with all my soul I did desire deliverance.”

You're probably experiencing the effects of social and psychological aspects involved in modern user experience and interface design.

Most modern interfaces are designed specifically to keep you engaged. Its the result of exhaustive user research and testing. Most, if not all, of the elements on your display serve that purpose. Its rarely coincedental. They stimulate your senses in different ways in order to maintain your attention. Everything from colors, sound, scale, size, placement and so forth play a role in it.

Back in the day a GUI's design was more-or-less a shot in the dark. They were more a product of personal preference and handywork. These days, not so much. Its all carefully engineered to make you stay engaged with a system.

I feel kind of sorry for the youth that strictly grow up on mobile or computer devices with minimal real life social interaction. It even seem like it has diluted some of their social skills. Quite frankly, some of them seem like humanoids. Possibly caused by too much digital stimulation and/or over usage.

In order to reduce phone usage, I think you need to monitor daily usage. Try reduce it from 5 hours a day to 4 hours slowly, eventually you’ll get rid the addiction.

This never worked for me.
And I have tried every shit that exists.. Apps that monitor, apps that block certain sites, apps that block my browsers completely.

The only thing that works for me is to have better things to do.
Going skateboarding, meeting friends, watching something that I like, playing some videogame, etc

I feel you bro but stop being such a pussy. Get rid of your phone and you will get so much time back .
How many times a day do you use your cellphone to actually talk to people? I’d guess not many so why do you really need it ?
Yes I have no cellphone at all and it’s the best, I see it all the time people just walking around like zombies shuffling around like idiots staring at their phone all day not realizing life going on around them. It’s pretty fucking sad.
Just use your dumb phone for when you really need it.
I have seen the damage cellphones do first hand, I was in the food industry and before cell phones became hugely popular maybe only one or two people had a cell phone and people used to come in and interacted with each other , talking having a drink and enjoying the company of each other, these days if you have a family come in everybody has a cellphone in hand and buries their face in the phone and dont say a word to each other the whole time. How can people really get to know the other person on the other side of the table when they never talk to each other ?
It’s different to actually talk to a person face to face then sending a stupid text message.
Kids dont even know how to talk around people they never met before because they have no human interaction and it’s pathetic.
If you start getting the urge to look at your phone go for a walk , go for a ride , do some push-ups, whatever.....something to distract you for 15-20 minutes and don't bring your cell phone.
I wish you luck but you have to really want to do this and commit.
Just think of the money you’ll save that you can put into things you actually want to do.
This is tough love but sometimes you have to hear it from another person to set in

Maybe get a GF instead of phone.
The way he describes himself he has no chance, what I see is a person with no self confidence or impulse control.
I hope I’m wrong but he has to work on himself before getting involved in a relationship.

MiyazakiHatesKojima MiyazakiHatesKojima Read a book. No honestly, read a book.

The danger with GAF (or any other community, for that matter) is how invested you get. I mean, living proof right here of taking things too seriously when you know they aren't.

Phone notifications are the bane of most social addiction. My solution? Turning the internet/bundle literally off. I look when i want to, not because a notification tells me to. I realize that this trigger to look works differently per individual however, so what works for me does not have to work for you perse.

Hence, read a book. Philosophy, fiction... and be outside. Remember how people talk, sometimes in past tense, about the simple things in life? Those are two of em imo.*

*It could also be that i am turning into an old fart that simply can't keep up with times. Anyone's guess really.

I mean he present a lot of confidence in here, not self-confident doubt every step. Including making threads, so I don't know. Also people really often don't go to relationship trouble free. Many issues often stems with feeling of being underisable to opposite sex (or same, I don't want to imply anything). Even though he stated that he is part of MGTOW, which is rarely legitimate feeling. Seems like just this thread suggests lack of social interaction, outside of the internet. So I don't know...

Darkness no more
Living alone and with most places being shut down here I’ve been spending a lot more time online this year. I think it is a good idea to come up with some things to do daily and leave your phone behind while doing them. I’m about to take my dogs for a long walk and I’ll leave my phone home. After that I will probably read a book and focus on that fully.

Yep. Reading is awesome, especially as you get older. I have so many darn books in this dumb house, practically a mini-library.

Often, I've argued, that if someone were to maintain reading and weightlifting as their main hobbies that it would be impossible for them not to be a very interesting individual. Probably one who does well with women too.

I wonder if your addiction to the internet is what caused your addiction to jacking off, and I wonder if that addiction is what caused your semen and Blue Chew addiction.

Absolutely this. A good book does wonders for your brain. Start with a book you know well and definitely like because if the phone has taken over your attention span will have atrophied, so you’ll need the help. Gradually upgrade once you’re comfortable.

Having confidence in real life and on the internet are 2 totally different things for a lot of people , the persona you portray anonymous online can vary greatly from person to person.
