IGN: Silent Hill 2 Remake Rumors, Bloober Team CEO Refuses to Comment, But Says New Project 'Will Still Be a Bloober Team Title'

Following rumors that horror game developer Bloober Team is remaking Silent Hill 2, CEO Piotr Babieno has said he cannot comment, but hopes to make an announcement about the company's future projects "as soon as we can". He added that its unannounced project will "still be a Bloober Team title", even if it's made in partnership with another company. Babieno also explained that future Bloober games will be bigger and more gameplay-focused than in the past, and will not be "walking sim"-type experiences.

Speaking to IGN at Polish games conference Digital Dragons, Babieno responded to rumors (first reported by influencer Nate the Hate and subsequently journalist Jeff Grubb) about a Silent Hill 2 Remake by saying:

“We can’t comment on anything we are doing because we appreciate our relationship with our partners, of course. So we can’t [say] anything. We will make an announcement about our future projects as soon as we can. So then you will know much more." Chuckling, he added, "Officially."

Bloober Team entered into a partnership with Konami — owner of the Silent Hill series — last year. Since then, multiple reports have linked the developer (which developed horror games Layers of Fear, Observer, Blair Witch, and The Medium) with a Silent Hill project. It was even forced to deny that some of its unused game concepts were planned Silent Hill titles. Bloober confirmed previously that it's simultaneously working on two titles, one with Konami, while another, due to be published by Private Division, is a new IP. Babieno tells me a third title is in pre-production.

Later in the interview, I asked Babieno about the company's experience working with a license holder in the case of Blair Witch, and the CEO briefly referenced one of Bloober's upcoming projects, making clear that his company's approach is to make games on its own terms, even if it's within someone else's franchise.

“I would say that it’s hard to work with someone who [owns an IP you’re working on], but we are always talking with those licensors, [saying] 'Guys we would like to use your license, but we would like to tell our own story.' If we are not able to tell our own story, if we will not have creative freedom, it doesn’t make sense, because Bloober Team will not make a great game," Babieno said. "If you are in a prison, you will not be able to fly. So that’s why we are trying to only [make] those titles in which we are feeling, ‘OK, it will be a Bloober Team game, not someone [else’s].' So even on the project we can’t talk [about], it will still be a Bloober Team title.”

Babieno didn't make clear that this was a reference to the Konami title, but it feels likely given that Bloober's Private Division game is a new IP. If that is the case, and Bloober is working on Silent Hill, Babieno's words could be taken to mean that the company is applying its own ideas to Silent Hill 2, or alternatively that its Silent Hill game is actually a new story in the series entirely. The CEO did not provide any further comment on those lines.

Speaking more generally about Bloober Team's future, Babieno said that the company was aiming to change the kinds of games it makes, while sticking with the dark, psychologically focused subject areas it has specialised in.

“There are a lot of people in our team who would like to do bigger games, with more gameplay, with some game mechanics [we haven’t used before] because mostly our past titles were experience-like, right? It was more about the mood, about the story, not necessarily about gameplay. [...] We would like to do games which will tell our stories based on the game mechanics. So you could expect that each of our future titles will have a lot of gameplay mechanics. Those titles will be bigger.”

He added that Bloober's games would continue to transition away from the "walking simulator" approach of its early successes, such as Layers of Fear.

"It’s not a huge jump, it’s rather evolution, but right now we are well-prepared to make games similar to Hellblade, to name [one example]. But I would say that we will still have our DNA - those games will still belong to Bloober Team’s legacy, and they will be bigger. We will tell stories [through gameplay], it will not be walking sim kinds of experience in the future, but still, the subject, those feelings which we would [we would like our fans to feel], they will remain," Babieno said.

Aside from the rumors about a Silent Hill 2 remake, images from what is rumored to be a brand new Silent Hill were revealed last week — and swiftly deleted after a copyright claim. The deletion seems to lend credence to their authenticity, although Konami has not commented.

Silent Hill 2 remains one of the most beloved games ever released. We named the PS2 psychological horror one of the best games of all time, calling it "an exploration of the depths of human depravity and the effects it has on the people and places around us that few video games have handled with such a disturbing grace and maturity."

It's pretty much confirmed that Bloober is doing a SH related project.
Could be a remake, a reboot, a spinoff.

I mean, comments like this show that there's really no condition for you that won't disappoint you. You've already conditioned your brain to be super critical of anything that happens.

For my part, I'll be happy if it's a BETTER title than the last three.
People are so thirsty for silent hill...people are so thirsty for disappointment.
we know theres at least 2 non-bloober SH games in development now,so at least those have a chance of being good

Good luck with that.

I thought Layers of Fear was a great experience and had some great jump scares and even some psychological moments that stuck with me. They weren't on the level of SH2, but I could see them pulling this off. I mean at this point, my expectations are so low, I just want to return to Silent Hill.

I bet the vast majority of people expect that the Sony game (Kojima's game) will be the ONE.

And to be fair, I hope that too. (Because Sony has the resources and P.T. (a simple marketing demo) was very influential. And felt original and innovative).

Good luck with that.

Is it fun going into everything with the assumption that it's going to suck? I feel like that must be tiring, and make you look like one of the 90's ads about smoking weed with the kids melted into the couch.

I mean, I get realism, but it's balancing on a knife point between being a dumb goofy Disney character and being someone who unironically listens to Hawthorne Heights.

Everything? No.
We are talking about this hypothetical bloobler Silent Hill Game. Alleged to be a SH2 Remake.

I feel like that must be tiring,
I guess. I dunno.

Haven't seen those.

Well. This is the thing.
1.People are not happy with Konami.
a) is this a genuine attempt form Konami to honor this franchise or just a cash grab capitalizing in the cult/masterpiece status of Silent Hill 2 (the alleged remake).

2. Is it bloober team, up to the challenge?
a)some people have serious issues with their writing and technical proficiency.

b) I don't think any western team has captured the essence of the Japanese-made Silent Hill games.

So. The odds are against this specific hypothetical game.

How the fuck this C Tier developer got all this relevance all of a sudden is beyond my comprehension

I undertand the hype behind SH, but they were already being hyped with The Medium ... And that turned out not so good

I love Silent Hill, but I have my expectations in check for their game

Honestly at this rate I'm just hoping for the best. I think it's clear that Bloober has a passionate team of devs, a number of them surely Silent Hill fans. I mean, they got Akira Yamaoka to do music for The Medium.

I know a lot of people are jumping to conclusions because of the performance of their previous titles, but who knows, things could change. I DO think that combat is the biggest question mark.

While this is interesting, I was hoping that they would do remakes of all the 1st three Silent Hill games not just the safe option of just doing 2 smh. Or better yet make a new installment or a creative way to combine the OG trilogy to make it accessible for the new generation of gamers.

Bloober Team is aight but I hope they some Team Silent folks helping them out on creating the feel of SH down to a T. I'm a little skeptical but we'll see.

Check out those ads, they're fucking hilarious.

Also, yeah, I understand the lack of faith in Konami given their uh..."output," recently. It's probably best to remain skeptical, I guess what I'm saying is whatever they put out probably isn't going to hold a candle to the first three SH games, but I'm not going in with any particular expectation in that regard. If it's a little bit less janky and derivative than everything after SH4, that would in my mind show at least a turning of the oar to begin the process of righting the ship.

I guess you could cite that as me not holding them to a higher standard, but let's face it, even putting out new games at this point is a surprise from Konami. I'm hoping seeing the outcry of interest in the wake of canceling Silent Hills got some of their staff to take it seriously again instead of throwing it out to JustFormed Software or ObscureRussianTech, but all we have to go off of right now is Dusk Golem and a chick with whorebitch on her forehead or whatever.

What these journos expecting when they are asking representatives to comment on rumors? That they will break NDA for them or what?

Konami is the only one to blame if this all boober team scenario is true and turns out to be a shit show. Fuck them, they don't deserve being the publisher that once was the house of team silent, they don't deserve owning Silent Hill!

That's so negative, man. You seem to be feeling Blue about this whole thing. Try and think out the Box. Can't we a get together around the campfire and singhasan?

People need a reality check when it comes to this IP though. Bloober Team will almost certainly make a better SH game than the last three entries.
I feel like that's a very low bar to clear (assuming you're talking about Homecoming, Downpour, and Book of Memories; Shattered Memories was fantastic).

On the other hand, they've failed that bar with every title they've ever put out. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know you are being sarcastic, but i didn't understood your point. If you think im in the blue box/Kojima team you're completely wrong! Silent Hill was one of the games that made me fall in love with gaming, and to me its coming back should be held by its creators.

Shitposting, no point.

But yeah, I think getting the boys back in the band and having a current gen Team Silent SH would be more beauty than the collective of any of us are worthy of beholding.

But, I mean.

That's never happening. *

So if another team manages to make something that isn't chicken fried abortion on a disc, it's better than just sitting there collecting dust for all regrettable eternity.

*Almost certainly, miracles do happen.

They've tried a few times to capture what Team Silent had, but failed. I'm more interested in who is doing the mainline title. I could give an illusory fuck about Bloober, Bluebox or whatever this conspiracy shit is.

I mean, if they fuck up the "remake" it's no harm, no foul. The PC patched version is still the staple and right after that, you got the PS2 and Xbox Duke versions that still exist, lastly.. if you hate yourself so much? You can go for the remastered PS3 version <----- :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Still think the original Silent Hill was a better and more interesting story than SH2. Definitely more suited to being remade because so much of the impact of SH2 relies upon surprise and suggestion. Pyramid head becoming so iconic over the years really stands against its function in the story, because at the end of the day - its not a character, its basically a plot-device.

My concern is that if they bring it back they'll end up over-using it to please fans -and end up driving the game away from its source.

Why the hell is SH4: The Room not included? That game was the last game made by Team Silent and it's absolutely amazing.

PS The CEO can fuck off with thinking he can put his own stamp on SH2. Seriously.

Bloober Team is getting better and better every game, but their not ready for remaking the GOAT. Maybe in few years, after they land some 9/10 original title.

On the other note, some people shitting on Bloober because Layers Of Fear forget that studios actually improve with experience. From Software made this crap https://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/steel-battalion-heavy-armor 10 years ago and now we have Elden Ring.
