IGN: Top 10 PlayStation First-Party Exclusives

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Check out our list of the top 10 PlayStation first-party exclusives of all time.

When the first PlayStation launched in the mid-90’s, Sony was a newcomer in the video game industry. Now, 25-plus years later, the PlayStation is a household name and has solidified its place as one of the dominant gaming platforms in history. And they did much of it all on the backs of their great first-party games. From early series like Ratchet and Clank, to blockbuster franchises like Uncharted and newcomers like Ghost of Tsushima, Sony has built a stable of truly great games. Let’s take a look at the 10 best.

This was a MASSIVE list of games we had to whittle down, so we decided to stick with first-party. Unfortunately, that means we couldn’t include some third-party favorites like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy 7, and Bloodborne, even though they are fantastic games and foundational to the success of the platform.

GT3, INFAMOUS 2, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, HORIZON, GOD OF WAR and a few more.

From the list, I choose shadow of the colossus.

Fine, I'll do it

10. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2)
9. Infamous 2 (PS3)
8. Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal (PS2)
7. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)
6. Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
5. Ghosts of Tsushima (PS4)
4. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3)
3. Marvel's Spiderman (PS4)
2. The Last of Us (PS3)
1. God of War (PS4)

Bloodborne isnt first party.

Ico and KZ2 deserve to be there.
  • Bloodborne is a first-party game developed in collaboration with a third-party. The first party developing the game is SCE Japan Studio. The third-party is From Software.
  • BLOODBORNE is a trademark of SONY INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT LLC.
  • Sony has funded bloodborne.

When i see all this for me it's a 1st exclusive like god of war or uncharted is.

I dont understand ranking Spiderman over Uncharted 2. And Ghost over SOTC. Ratchet and infamous over Killzone. Like what?

They already gave themselves an out by not including more than one game from a franchise which is straight up cheating that allowed them to put pretty much every big franchise in there.

Here is my list:

10) Resistance 3: Easily the best single player FPS campaign a Sony studio has produced. It had shades of Half Life 2 which is the highest praise I can give it.
9) Killzone 2: An audio visual masterpiece, but the MP was the true star. Felt different than pretty much everything out there at the time.
8) Ico: The feels.
7) Horizon : Amazing combat and the best visuals I had seen at the time by a long shot.
6) GoW 3 - Never has a game delivered on its promise on delivering revenge this well before. What a spectacle this game was.
5) The Last Guardian - The feels redux.
4) Uncharted 2 - Masterpiece in every way. Great combat, setpieces, characters, visuals, MP. It had it all.
3) SOTC - Feels overload.
2) GoW - I dont know how they rebooted a game with a different combat system, humanized a revolting character like Kratos and completely redesigned the level design in one game, but its the second best game i played last gen behind RDR2.
1) TLOU - It doesnt get any better than this.

From was the lead developer on Bloodborne my man. Yes, Sony Japan helped out but its a From game through and through.

Then Spider-Man wasn't first party, neither is Demon's Souls, Sackboy? Nah. MicroSofts Flight Simulator? Nope.
They are. They paid for, own the IPs and published them. First party games from third party developers.

Spiderman and Ratchet wasnt first party but can be considered first party now that they have been acquired. If we are being anal about this then I agree they should not be included.

Demon Souls and sackboy shouldnt be included either. Same with MS flight Sim. First party is supposed to be studio owned. You are thinking second party where a third party is hired to make games. For example, The Order is not a first party game even though they own the IP. Same goes for Heavenly Sword.

If we are including second party games then yes, Bloodborne should be included.

No first party is anything published and owned by the console manufacturer. Internally developed is a different thing

This is a list of internally developed games, not first party

I dont know how seriously I can take a person who says second party is not a thing. Like I wasnt born yesterday. People have been calling these games second party for as long as forums have been around. And no gaf didnt come up with the term second party. It's an industry term.

This is a list of internally developed games, not first party
This I agree with.

I dont understand ranking Spiderman over Uncharted 2.
Sir, you shouldn't even rank Spiderman at all as with your logic its not first party as at the time, it wasn't developed by a Sony owned team......this is why I think the term is irrelevant to any of this, who the fuck owns the IP? That's it. I have no clue why who made it would suddenly change it being first party when the publisher still owns the IP.

From was the lead developer on Bloodborne my man. Yes, Sony Japan helped out but its a From game through and through.
Nah, its a Sony game as to why they own the IP..... Sony contracts them to make the game, as in they own the thing they are paying them to make for THEM.

It is Sony that got Bluepoint to make the Demon Souls remake, not From.... as in...its SONY's IP, they OWN IT, so I think the term has no real place with "who worked on it" as it makes little sense and offers little relevance to any of this.
Spiderman and Ratchet wasnt first party but can be considered first party

Oh they are 100% first party IPs sir.

I don't believe the term should ever have anything to do with what team is doing what, its literally irrelevant to anything thats being talked about. I'm not debating quality or what team does what best etc, what I'm saying is saying "first party" shouldn't involve what team did anything if the publisher owns the IP.

Because all it questions is, what are we even saying when we say "first party" if you just mean a team internally making it regardless of ownership? Using this logic, almost nothing is first party as many teams are outsourced to work on many smaller things on games.

If anything, think about it from Sony's purspective.

When they talk internally about projects, why the fuck would they have a different name for a game based on if their teams are working on it or not, when basically almost no game under them is 100% ONLY being made by them and no other team or something. Sooooooo Sony would look at the sales of Ratchet as a SONY OWNED IP, regardless if outsourced to Insomniac or not. As someone that invested in real estate, I don't look at a property and be like "that is a second party property"

Them "? huh? Oh you don't own it?"

Me 'I mean, I own it cuh, but someone else did some of the work"

The fuck that got to do with anything to the person that owns several? It makes little difference and sounds like semantics.

I bought a new TV last night, mine was from the 2000s, and was thinking about what I could play on my PS5. I realized that I basically only purchase fighting games anymore on PS. I don't actually own a PS5 exclusive title, and I don't know if there are any that aren't remakes/releases.

Because they are Neanderthals who don't know about games ...

They always play the same games.

The good thing is that we know about games, we know what they deserve, like Gravity Rush, Bloodborne and Shadow of the colossus

Bloodborne is a "2nd party" game. An IP published, funded by Sony but created by a 3rd party. Insomniac Games was for 20 years a "2nd party", exclusively working on PS systems. If the studio is not fully owned by Sony, i don´t consider it "first party", funding it or not does not matter.

Else we have to accept and finally agree that Gears of War, Fable, Halo etc. are "first party" because they´re published by Microsoft, even though they were created by a "3rd party" or for a different system altogether at one point.

BB is a 3rd party exclusive or 2nd party since they´ve been working together since the PS1 days, but i would not call it a "first party" game just because Sony paid for it.

round numbers GIF
1st party - published by Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo
3rd party = published by other

(spoiler - the 2nd party legally involved in the financial transaction of buying a game.. is you.)

I don't know about all that. I have nothing against the games you like btw, I love them too, simply that I don't think anyone can make a top 10 for PS exclusives and really have everyone agree with it.

They put out some amazing titles over the generations. So I'd say most of us not agreeing with even each other's top 10 is a testament to just how much gems Sony put out, something is always left out that many of us feel deserve the attention.

My personal Top 10 in no real order.

The Last Of Us 2
Uncharted 2
Killzone 2
Ico
God Of War 2018
Ratchet and Clank 1
GT3
Horizon Zero Dawn
Demon Souls
Death Stranding

Now understand this sir, someone will get mad at me for the following, where is Socom, where is Days Gone, where is The Getaway, where is Syphon Filter, where is Sly series, Infamous, Shadow Of The Colossus, Gravity Rush, Bloodborne......Knack lol Do you now see why its a bit hard to do something like this and get everyone to agree with it? I think Sony has done an amazing job over the generations at being able to let go of a series and move on to something new to keep us getting new concepts, ideas etc, in doing so they have a LOT of gems that people love. (funny enough, its why many always have that debate on mascots for PS, they simply don't put all the money on the same things all the time, the focus is more on the teams then it is 1 IP here or there outside of static stuff like racing or sports)

They simply are not in a situation where we just name 3 IP or something. Because of this, that list of titles will be pretty long and I don't know if we can even get a top 10 that even 90% of us all agree with. imho, its a good thing. I won't go as far as to say they don't know about games, simply that their list is not to disrespect anything that isn't in the top 10 or something as me and you can be attacked for not putting a lot in our top 10 lol

Instead of arguing about what the definition of 1st party means can't we all just act like grown ups and just go along with the content creators definition in order to observe and discuss their list?

Nah this is the internet of course we can't. Bloodborne is first party and should be number 1. Suck it.

Idiotically limiting yourself to a top 10 and getting stuck in the asinine logic of first and second party terms, missing out amazing games like: Siren, Gravity Rush, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Omega Boost and so on...

Yeah... You can't say Ignorant without IGN.

I think it's a great list.

BB or Demons Souls shoulda probably been in there somewhere.....

There are so many amazing PS exclusives through the years that it's gonna be impossible to please everyone.

Damn Gran Turismo 3: A Spec still looks good today.

Sir, GT3 and Tekken 5 dead ass looking like games that PS2 simply can't run, yet exist.

We need a name for those games that are beyond their hardware and using some sort of voodoo magic, matrix sorcery lol

I promise Insomniac know more about games than you.

THIS 100%

I don't even get the point of how such a thing would be labeled as the only relevance to Sony or any publisher tbh is, do they own it or not. Thats about it.

We've literally seen Sony titles made internally and then later outsourced for a sequel or something, yet nothing like that would suddenly need to be seen as "other" to Sony themselves.

If you build homes for a living and make money flipping or something, it would be like having a list of homes you own and be like "this folder is for the ones I built myself with no help and this is for the ones that was contracted out"

.....as if anything of that shit matters if all are owned by you, legally its meaningless. Mortgage is yours, deed is yours etc.

Spider-Man is not the third best PS exclusive, not even close. But, then again, Demon's Souls, Bloodborne and Returnal would all be on my personal list.

Really weird list.

I'm sure we all agree LittleBigPlanet 1 or 2 (PS3) or Crash Team Racing (PS1) are far better than Ratchet and Infamous 2.

Kinda stupid to not include second party like Bloodborne. And, it's silly to limit entries to one game per franchise. Something tells me they wouldn't do this for Xbox or Nintendo lol.

Geez compare that to what an Xbox or Nintendo top ten would look like it's sorely lacking.
Just goes to show Sony would be nowhere without getting lucky from 3rd party exclusives.
