imgur set to remove all nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content starting May 15th

Looks like we have a new tumblr on our hands.

Full post:

Our new Terms of Service will go into effect on May 15, 2023. We will be focused on removing old, unused, and inactive content that is not tied to a user account from our platform as well as nudity, pornography, & sexually explicit content. You will need to download/save any images that you wish to save if they no longer adhere to these Terms. Most notably, this would include explicit/pornographic content.
We will not be making any changes to our Community Rules - this means content in the public gallery will not change. However, we will need to employ automated detection software to assist in identifying explicit content. We are aware of the limitations and issues with using automated detection means exclusively, so we will continue to use human moderators alongside automated detection.
"Why we are doing this?"
Previously, Imgur's Community Rules and Terms of Service applied to all community interactions on the site, while the Terms of Service applied to all content on Imgur as a whole.
This caused some confusion among Imgurians, we hope this change will make policies more clear and more consistent across Imgur. Namely:
  • Explicit/Pornographic content was previously permitted to be on Imgur, but not when submitted as a comment or as a gallery submission. This caused frustration with users who received content violations for the content they have seen posted elsewhere off-site. Aligning our Terms of Service more closely with our Community Rules should help clearly define what is and isn’t permitted on Imgur.
  • Explicit and illegal content have historically posed a risk to Imgur's community and its business, disallowing explicit content will allow Imgur to address these risks and protect the future of the Imgur community.
  • Artistic nudity will continue to be permitted, as it was permitted under the Rules previously - however, since we're calibrating automated detection in these early stages, some content that may have been permitted under "artistic exceptions" previously may not apply here. We will not be issuing any warnings, account suspensions, or bans in relation to these automated flags - but this may impact what is allowed to be submitted or uploaded. Should there be any issues preventing you from uploading content that is falsely flagged as explicit content, we want to hear from you.

i really despise what they did to the imgur community, it wasn't even that long ago I used to visit the site daily it was so positive, funny and one of the best communities online. then it was the first time i've seen a website get TDS. Turned to utter shit ever since, endless cynicism, mean spirited, and fun killing miserable site.

Because it worked out well for imageshack, tinypic, photobucket, etc. Look how much they're thriving today.

Why would they shoot themselves in the foot like this?

Edit: *Checks bookmarks any for explicit imgur pics*.

Sounds like a thoroughly thought-out plan that definitely never ended up in catastrophe for other image hosting sites.

Godspeed, Imgur.

Flickr has done something similar too. No nude images on accounts that don’t pay them.

People are also missing that they will be deleting all content uploaded where the person wasn’t logged into an account. This is going to create dead links all over the internet… including many OTs from over the years here I would imagine.

I'm doubtful Tumblr was that heavily quoted on NeoGAF, and even it if was the post would be enough to get the point across.

This is about Imgur not Tumblr...
Oh lol, I was thinking about the opening post. Yes this is a problem because it's always annoying to see a well-liked post and you can no longer see the image in question. One would assume that the people who look over these older threads are in the minority right? I do it myself, but not many others do.

I'll end up looking at old threads if I'm playing a game I missed upon release. It sort of feels like a seance but with ghosts who share my interest

I didn't know imgur main selling point was porn.

I just use it to host images.

Doubt it will be Tumblr level diaster IMO.

Oh, shoot. I actually have some R 18+ comics that I translated myself a couple of years ago hosted there.
I guess I'll have to back them up somewhere else. What a pain.
The most annoying thing is going to be updating the links on the blog where I have them posted.
Speaking of which, does anyone know of a good alternative site?
