As the title asked: Is there any rhyme or reason why a game on Series X has quick resume or not?

I have Gamepass Ultimate that allows me to play some games on PC as well as my Series X. I usually will play a game on PC when I want no compromise on the graphics vs. performance. But for games like "Last Stop" which is not graphically demanding, I would rather play it on the Series X and utilize the quick resume feature.

But I realize that "Last Stop" does not support the resume feature. I also downloaded some fairly recently added games like "The Ascent", "Cris Tales" and "Raji" and they also do not support the quick Resume feature. That's 4 recently added games to Gamepass that does not support quick resume(As far as I can tell). What's going on? What makes a game not able to have the quick resume feature?

-Can't be because games on both Series X and PC, because Zombie Army 4 is on both and has quick resume
-Can't be because it doesn't have the "Enhanced for X/S" label because I've both with quick resume
-Can't be because of some Online feature, because some of the game I have listed and played before are single player with no online play, etc.

I like the quick resume feature on the Series X, so I am kind of sad/confused why the 4 recently added games I have downloaded to the Series X does not support quick resume. Unless there is something I am doing wrong and forgot to turn on?

an xbox dev mentioned something about the GDK min-spec being sent out with some bug fixes but it disabled quick resume by default causing it to need to be verified manually by the team before releasing the feature publicly. As more games use the updated GDK it will make quick resume a standard feature. I'm guessing the devs were using an older version of the GDK? idk

I've noticed that few games actually are supporting quick resume.
Just starting to play The ascent. NO quick resume. Not a shocker anymore as few games on gamepass support quick resume. It's becoming the exception to find a quick resumable game.
It's no longer a killer feature. It's a missing feature on most games.

I only used it to listen to music while grinding Destiny 1, because the One OS didn't support background music playback until about 1.5 years into the generation... which was also just fucking awful.
the whole OS was such an absolute piece of dogshit at launch, it's baffling how mismanaged the Xbox One truly was

Yes, Yes it was. Everything was an app. everything had to load. What in the world were all those OS and memory doing at launch? sitting there empty I guess. Launch xbox one was just awful.

they need to manually enable it because some games don't work well with it, and if developers don't optimise for it you can get bugs.

for example, Ubisoft games and their constant online connection stuff can literally fuck up your saves if you use quick resume (not sure if that's fixed yet)

so I think Microsoft is doing this a bit more carefully now because Developers just didn't optimise their games at all and just activated it for them anyways.

Any game that has online play or online functionality will need to be specifically coded to support quick resume.

Network connectivity is event driven, so when you lose connection it'll fire an event you catch in your game engine to handle that scenario; so the game engine knows exactly what state the network is in based on these events the os/kernel throws it.

The problem with quick resume is that it puts the game effectively into cryo-sleep, once the ram contents have been dumped to disk the game is no longer running, and will no longer receive events, but when you quick resume it takes that ram from disk and throws it back into ram as if nothing ever happened - the game has no idea it's been "sleeping" and still thinks everything is how it was. If you lost connectivity whilst it was sleeping, then resumed game, it may still think you are connected to the network.

The other scenario is you are still connected but your IP has changed, or the auth token to the server has expired, or 1001 other possible scenarios have occured that could easily cause a game to crash; so instead when you quick resume you get a 'quick resume' event, and then you use that to check every single thing that may have changed whilst it was sleeping and have to code something to handle all the possible scenarios.

tldr; it's a pain in the ass for online games and they load so quick, not always worth the investment in dev time.

It seems to come and go for me, cold war recently started showing the quick resume label, even though that game kicks you back to the menu after you lose the connection.
Maybe it's because I started to turn of the console while cold war was still running?

If this is the case Microsoft just simply forgot to turn it back on and every game released the past 2 months or so just by default no quick resume.
Microsoft asleep at the toggle switch perhaps?

Quick resume is a nice feature, but can lead to some side effects if developers don't think about some things.
E.g. assassin's Creed Valhalla had a bug (don't really know if it was fixed) as you could loose your game progress when the game did not correctly reconnect to servers if you resumed the game. Your session/token timed out and the game just informed the user with a little pop in that an error occured. If you did not see the error and played the game there was no problem as long as the game did not crash and you still be sed quick resume after after your game sessions. But the problem occured If the you restart the game. The game than loads all saves from the ubi cloud and overwrites everything you have locally. Problem with that, since the error no save game was transferred...
Lost about 4h because of this error. Others in the ubi forum over 20h.
So it is really better if quick resume s deactivated until developers really tested their game with the feature.

Also I feel on a few occasions the game removed from the list was not the least recently played. Finally I swear on a couple of occasions I've seen more than 3 titles suspended in the list, I'm almost certain I saw 5 once, but didn't think to grab a screenshot at the time.

You can have 3 Series S|X games in quick resume at any given time, and on top of that I think another 3-5 previous generation games as well. So if your least recently played quick resume games are Xbox One games, but you already have 3 Series S|X games in Quick Resume, starting another S|X game will drop the least recently played S|X game from quick resume, not the Xbox One game.

I'm not exactly sure, but some games like Dark Souls III supports quick resume even though it probably shouldn't. You get disconnected from online when you suspend the game for too long, essentially making quick resume not only unnecessary but also problematic.

We had a thread recently on quick resume and it's a feature I don't find myself using but I did try getting myself use to it after conversations I had in the other thread but I think the inconsistency between the games and then people saying don't use quick resume with certain games....well, it was just easier to revert back to what I was using to doing — which is basically a habit by now — seems it's not worth it.
