Honestly the main criticism for me?

The main couple was boring. Didn't care for them one bit. And Sersei is boring as a main character.
Angelina could be sitting right there without saying a word and she just outshined whatever was going on and that was hilarious to me.
Heck ya to the Angelina comment. I know you liked it and I didn't, but we 100% agree on that point :)

I know I'm writing things as I remember and it's annoying but my second biggest criticism is about this movie and MCU lately and it's regarding the mid and post credit scenes:

they make no sense anymore. They were either about characters we knew or about teasing the next movie. You felt the hype after them. Both scenes in this movie....was I supposed to feel anything about all these unknown characters? Am I supposed to feel hyped for...what exactly? Like, they could've been a part of the movie honestly.

Another thing .. piggybacking off my other post...

Makkari - Flash
Ikarus - Superman
Thena - Batman/Wonder Woman
Phastos - Green Lantern
Kingo - Green Arrow
Cersei - Zatanna
Druig - Martian Manhunter (sans strength and flight)
Sprite - Loki

Starfox aka Eros being the brother of Thanos is a big reveal to folks who don't follow comics... And it also teased about the Eternals getting their memories back...

The second was... That was the freaking Ebony Blade! Meaning that's The Black Knight Kit is supposed to become... And the voice calling out to him is Blade... That was Mahershala Ali talking!

Again... Teases us for us comic fans and mysteries for the normies who don't follow this stuff like we do. I explained them both to my date... She was all like "Oh snap! I can't wait!"

looked sooooooooooo bad, and his little elf guy? Did the Black Panther Climax CG Team make him? I can't believe a film as pretty as Eternals (its best attribute) had such a bad looking scene it. Are post credit scenes directed by a different team?

Also why is he human looking? If he's Thano's brother, why isn't he purple? ( I do not read the comics, so I have no clue about this)

So I've slept on it and I've come to the conclusion that Black Widow is the worse film. But this one's still pretty bad. The Thor 2 comparisons are completely appropriate.
I keep forgetting about the Black Widow film.... yep, you're right, its in a league of its own in terms of bad.

It was just okay. Such a long movie and yet characters still underdeveloped. Didn't buy the love story whatsoever.

Didn't feel much for any death. While fights looked cool, the deviants were lame. And boy Kit does fuck all and is just a walking teaser. Not terrible, not great.

I chuckled when Ikaris called Sprite "spirit" when she left for him in lava mountain scene. Like does nobody checks how did that sound

I went to the movie thinking it would be pretty bad and kinda wanted to skip it, I even posted in this thread about the RT score dropping. And also that Silicon Valley dude being a total chode in IRL.

But even despite all of that the movie was actually pretty good, the best of the marvel films this year (i know high bar lol).

The fight on the beach was kind of hilarious cause they just take a massive dump on DC / WB.

The beach fight was basically Justice League they even built the scene to selectively make that fight have THOSE specific Eternals in it while having other Eternals busy doing something else. And execution of the fight just shows how much better Marvel is at action.

Ikaris was Superman
Deaf Chick was Flash
Thena was Wonder woman
Black dude was Batman

In regards to the diversity complaints here... What is it about the diversity that impairs the movie, in your opinions?

Like, as far as I know, no one of the characters is harping on their race, disability or sexual orientation (I haven't seen it yet... I'm going to see it with two of my beautiful homegirls this evening). Like I would understand if a character or 3 was like "I'm black and you have to like it!" Or "I'm gay and fabulous you loser straights!" ... But I haven't gotten that impression anything like that stands out ... I keep seeing "the diversity hurts the movie and people see that!" ... But HOW is it doing that? Wouldn't you prefer folks just treat it as normal? That it's not a declaration every 5 mins to remind you that multiple characters are this race, that sexuality or whatever disability?

I really would like to know
For me it's the complete disregard for the original material and what appears to be nothing more than a diversity-grab. I grew up reading the comics and some of the characters I'd very much look forward to translating to the big screen, instead they took various big name actors that in no way resembled the source material they were portraying.

Does it bother me enough to stop me from watching/liking the movie, ABSOLUTELY NOT. But to even see a preview and have a strong familiarity with the original content I see what's being presented and have to ask this question

They didn't change Iron man, they didn't change Captain America, they didn't change Dr. Strange, they didn't change Captain Marvel (well in the comics they have several times anyways), they didn't change Black Panther, they didn't change Guardians of the Galaxy, they didn't change Black Widow, they didn't change Thor.......did I miss any? .....They didn't change Daredevil, they didn't change Luke Cage, they didn't change Iron Fist, they didn't change Punisher

They did change the Eternals. I'm a fucking comic book nerd not a racist.

They changed Nick Fury right? I don't think he was black before the MCU. Marvell was a dude in the comics. The made some original characters for SM movies like Michelle Jones (presumably due to the sharing agreement with Sony). They changed Taskmaster (I guess until they fix it and give us Tony Masters like they did the Mandarin). Eternals was not known for the vast majority of people so they felt comfortable swapping them.

Point is Marvel Studios is not above race swapping and gender swapping characters, especially smaller characters. That should be clear by now. I'm sure it'll continue once we get mutants, presumably more unknown mutants (though to be honest there are already so many good mutants of all origins that I don't see the need to swap one for film, but I digress). What I really hope they don't do and what I see some very vocal people online saying is Lensheer, Xavier, Howlett, etc being race swapped. I have seen some folks saying Kevin Hart as Wolverine and I just wanted to punch the screen. I also saw someone suggest that girl who played Precious as Storm, and that's a no no. To my dismay though there are already some rumors they will be race swapping F4 characters. I usually don't pay those rumors much mind, but it seems like they were spot on when it came to Ms Marvel, so....

Great example with Nick Fury and you're right in that we're likely to see it happen more often than not going forward.

I'm excited to see Eternals when it hits Disney+, wont be paying for it though.

I always thought this current version of nick fury was weird. Like I thought he was suppose to be a badass character and that we would see that but i think we have only seen him like fire a gun like once after the captain marvel movie. Most of the time it is just him popping up and talking to folks.

Without flaws? Did you see that plot twist? And plenty other parts of the movie. They are characters with
flaws, doubts, that make mistakes.

I agree with you about Jolie though. Thena was the best of the movie and

fortunately she survived. Seems like she's playing a big role in the future. She also had one of the best fights and character development of the movie.

The movie had an almost impossible task to present us with 10 new characters to connect with us and that's a tough task. That's almost like starting the MCU with an avengers movie. They wanted to skip the step of having an individual movie for each one as it wouldn't make much sense here and I really don't think they could've done a better job giving the nature of the movie. Fortunately

there's only like 6 of them now so whatever they do next it's going to make that task easier.

Movie was sloppy in how it told its story. Deviants plot felt tacked on. I feel a mini series would have worked better. To much chopped up editing and jumping back and forth. I felt nothing for phastos view on giving humans technology. They should have done a mini series where they tell the story starting at early point in time and work their way up to present.

This forum really is a bunch of grumpy old men.
Eternals was really good, not top tier but middle tier good. I really enjoyed the story and the revelations and the action was done really well. I went with 8 other people and we all enjothough. One of my friends was even impressed at the diverse cast.

It is long and not everyone gets the characterisation they need but it still works.

I had a feeling even when the trailers released that Ikarus would be a bad guy. But he wasn'teven really bad and was just doing his job. I felt bad for him at the end when he realised that what he was doing was actually terrible. I don'tbelieve for a secondthat he is dead though.

I was really surprised by the reveal of what the Eternals really are.

I wanted the see more Celestials!!! Do we think we'll ever see Eternity and Infinity on screen?

I wish Gilgamesh wasn't dead, love his brute force.

Why did the Deviant plot go no where? Do we think the Deviant leader will return in a future film?

Couldn't believe I was seeing fucking Pip the troll in that first credit scene. Fucking Pip. I literally just read a comic witqh him in it the other day. Nek minute he in the MCU.

And yeah, action is great, beach fight with MCU Justice League is way better than Snyder Justice League. How is that even possible?

The film is a complete mess though, it does a lot of new things but it feels old fashioned, the plot is completely predictable and the SFX are some of the worst in the MCU.

If the movie concentrated on one or two characters and had the rest as side ones then it would be better for it, its too much into 2 hours which leaves it messy and so much forced upon us.

It should be a good film.... but it isnt.

Chloe Zhao = Great (Loved Nomadland)
Diverse cast = Great (nice to see something different in the MCU)

But the above doesn't take away from the fact that the film is a mess, boring and the characters are bland (due to how little we know of them)

I think the issue honestly is the source material. Kirby's run was trippy as fuck, and it was hard to get through because of all the exposition on eternals, humans, deviants, and celestials.

I think trying to cram all of that into 2.5 hour film is a hard order in trying to have the director convey what the characters go through, throughout their time on earth. I wish there was more scenes like the one where Angelina goes apeshit on the group, and there's a human war happening in the background. To me thats the stuff that worked, but we needed more of it so we could connect to all the characters starting to question themselves, and their mission.

Phastos should have had more than one atrocity hit him emotionally where he felt responsible for giving tech to humans. It would have been nice to see thena in greek/roman times actually being looked up to as a deity and going apeshit in the colosseum where the others make their presence known and the people think they are gods hence the mythology of greek gods starting during that event.

I feel the whole introduction of deviants muddies everything.
It would have been better set up to maybe have celestials tell ajak that Deviants may never touch them as if they do, that eternal needs to die or something. Like have it celestials know that deviants will evolve if they absorb a eternal. I dont know honestly, the movie was a mess, but I could see a ton of cool potential thats the issue. And now they are going forward where we have to care about eternals?

Hopefully since they are all kind of awake, their personalities will be much more explorable.

You're still paying Disney+ which is still a bad choice imo given the generic trash they peddle to their customers.

This movie should have like others have said just focused on maybe the history of the two lovers. You could see glimpses of that romance across time and had a different bad guy in the end. This should have been a trilogy story. You introduce the characters but focus on the two. In the next story you then focus on the mind reading guy and the tech guy. In the last movie you have anakin going to the dark side moment for Icarus with the big celestial finale.

Was it explained why they broke up a century ago? He'd apparently known the truth since Babylon so it wasn't that. They were together for thousands of years then he leaves but it's not explained why?

I don't remember it being explained. The movie just had so many plot holes. Like the reason the black guy decided to not give up on humanity was because he raised a child. Like in the last 7,000 years none of them raised children? I would have figured all of them would have like some clan from some child they adopted through a marriage or relationship and they would have watched over them all this time. The mind control guy was weird as well. Like why did he go amish instead of super advanced civilization.

Another thing that bugged me is shouldn't they have been more comfortable to live inside of the super advanced ship plus shouldn't the ship would have had devices inside to scan the world and locate deviants so they didn't miss them. Wouldn't it have made more sense for the ship to have weapons on it they could use to destroy the deviants instead of just going out there and fighting them in person.

Which was the last memorable show/movie you watched there? Personally I tend to forget about the vast majority of Disney crap the second they end
Mandolrian and Loki are my top 2
but also have kids in the house and there are endless options for them on the service.

yeah, and that was one of the main dramas during the first half of the movie and they just completely forgot to give the reason why he left. I swear I somewhat enjoyed the movie while I watched it but the more I thought about the movie the worst it became. They didn't really think about the characters and how they would change over 7,000 years plus all of the plot holes. I'm surprised all of them didn't go crazy after 7,000 years after witnessing so much pain, suffering , and deaths over and over again.

Whenever I see any complaints about diversity, I doubt the sincerity behind it...

And the diversity makes sense to me... If you're an alien species that wants to introduce god-like protectors... Wouldn't they be surface-level diverse? Globally, white people are the minority. So it makes sense to me.

The movie had an almost impossible task to present us with 10 new characters to connect ..there's only like..

This is what I mean by mandates ruining the production process. the focus is no longer on telling the story. A movie is a single time limited standalone experience. shoehorning elements can destroy it. and when Marvel say the crew were put together as a celebration of diversity, it will be a difficult task to supervise them.

Justice League is an example. a different cut and more minutes made it more coherent. It was easier to critique that movie because there was no shield for the studio to hide behind.

And Americans go about "diversity" in a dumb way. Gilgamesh is supposed to be Persian. Hollywood keeps portraying other cultures according to what they imagine us to be. not as what we present ourselves. treating us like dolls and dressing us in whatever they like.

And in the original comic Eternals are hundreds. basically almost all the mythical figures in all world cultures are Eternals.

Yes. And it wasn't A century ago...it was HUNDREDS of years ago... There was a whole scene with them together
after the Mayan massacre and Druig leaving. Ajak told them all to leave and live their loves and she hoped that when they were all together again, that they'd tell her their stories.

I don't see how you missed that whole scene.

It was explained why he left... He didn't want to keep lying to Sersi... So he left so that he wouldn't have to.
He explained it a little when they were coming up with that plan to neutralize Tiamut.

Ah ok. Earlier on Dane mentions that Sprite had said that Sersi and her ex broke up a century ago rather than several centuries. So I figured they were still together for a few centuries after that. But I guess Sprite mispoke when she slipped up in saying that.

..I explained them both to my date... She was all like "Oh snap! I can't wait!"

not a scenario most of us older comics nerds would ever occur. go back to the 90's and tell them Marvel would be a bigger pop culture subject than Star Wars, and you can impress the date talking about it.

IMOO it would have been best to introduce them in other Marvel movies like the infinity gems. the challenge with Eternals is that their theme is to big. it's a problem in the comics also. they couldn't fit the grand scope of the characters with the more popular and traditional mainstream characters. they had a chance to do that in the MCU but unfortunately they just did the same mistake as in the comics. though this is not an easy thing to do. even the 4th World was difficult to fully merge with the DCU. they just basically cut off the Darkside part and patched it in... maybe there is a sign here, Kirby's spirit resisting assimilation.

For me it's the complete disregard for the original material .. they didn't change Guardians of the Galaxy, .did I miss any?

Comics are frequently retconned and more aggressively than the movies. In fact, Comics are probably what made the term "retcon" popular in the 1st place.
The problem isn't change, it's how things fit together. Shang-Chi was the biggest change and it was an improvement. the GotG are not the original GotG.

Its also interesting to note that the comics Eternals have routinely failed to take off. Jack Kirbys original tale with them was quickly cancelled and attempts to revive them were moderate successes at best. Marvel decided to use these guys as a flagpole film, was definitely a bold decision

Considering Venom 2 is a sequel to a film audiences liked, Black Widow was a long awaited movie from a character that showed up in like 9 movies and Shang Chi which is a new entry only got 4M more with one extra day, I'd say Eternals lines up. If it had one extra day it would surpass Chang Shi's debut. Overall the movie is doing better WW on first weekend than both Black Widow and Chang Shi...it might end up as the biggest MCU movie of the year from Disney.

The twist? We're in 2021 and both Marvel movies from Sony (Venom and Spider Man) will outgross the Marvel movies released by Disney.

If you told me that would happen a few years ago I would laugh at you for sure. Sony has come a long way from the Amazing Spider-Man movies for sure.

Yea honestly Spiderman is inherently extremely popular, easily the most lucrative superhero and the new movie has been immensely hyped for well over a year. NWH could possibly hit 115 mil domestic if not higher.

It was ok. I was expecting a complete trainwreck but it's just an average marvel movie.

I don't understand why critics don't like it.

Agree. Just a okay movie. Btw critics hate Bad Boys 1&2 which are great. Sometimes audiences and critics just disagree with each other.

Funny, I think the opposite:

I enjoyed the movie, but I was thinking "ok, this is cool, but how is it connected to the rest of the MCU?" Then, we had the last part of the movie and the post credit scenes.

I saw the movie today. Not the best Marvel ever, but definitely the best Marvel movie released this year.

I prefer the story of Eternals. Especially:

Ikaris. I really enjoyed the character and its motivations, it's one of my favorite Marvel character ever. I also really liked Kingo.

We must be in alternate reality's where Tony Leong's Mandarin was not great? I thought the story, lore, and family dynamic worked better and came across better than Ikaris's arc. It all felt hollow because the source material they are very stoic, so its hard to translate to film. But to each their own. I also am a huge Kung-Fu, iron fist fan so I'm a little bias.

I liked the movie. Best movie of the last MCU wave (even if it's not saying much). Very cool characters and group dynamics (those aren't just heroes working together like the Avengers, most of them have special bonds).
Some of the actions scenes were great, especially towards the end.
The biggest weakness of the movie are the Deviants, that never manage to fit in a convincing manner in the main plot. They're just filling the spot for the default antagonist so that the main characters have something to fight, most of the time.

Just watched Eternals, it’s…meh. Just seriously dragged in parts. The cast are fine and it’s beautifully shot, even the action was well done, but the story is just boring and lacking substance.
