Can't believe that after the ENDGAME this all they had in their pockets...

Ridiculous. Who planned this shit? How we should call the current MCU phase? Can we even call it a phase? Bunch of random nonsense...

I'm looking forward for the new Spidey because the OG Spidey will be there and after that...

I thought the flashback stuff in the past was the best parts.

The modern stuff only seemed to be a setup for this

Blade is cool and all, but I don't believe that it will top the original 2 movies for me. Can't be worse than the 3rd one tho lmao

I have a soft spot for the first two Blade movies and was pretty salty when everyone was losing their shit for the Black Panther because "it was the first black Marvel hero F yeah!!!".

Not really interested in the other stuff.

What we have now feels like a classical Naruto like filler...

What was the hint about Namor in Eternals? Did I miss something?

I'm going to go and watch Eternals again because I can't stop thinking about it. Like I said before it's not top tier but there are so many good ideas and good things in general in this film.

Some people have said the CGI is bad but I honestly can't fault the CGI. I mean the Deviants don't look 100% realistic but that is to do with the visual art style they are going for, organic but not organic creatures. And that GIF of Thena that was earlier in the thread, yeah, watching it on repeat you start to see the faults but seeing it on the big screen there is no issue. There is no issue because you are meant to see that shot within 0.4 seconds, it's not meant to be played 50 times in a row until you start seeing faults. You could do that with any CGI related scene.

I want to see more of Arishem and the other Celestials. See his scale against Ajak and the Earth at the end of the film is quite amazing, awe inspiring. It's amazing how insignificant it makes the Earth feel because there is so much more "out there". How will he judge the Eternals, literally just by looking at their memories or will the Living Tribunal be involved?

I've also noticed people say that the story in Eternals doesn't make sense in reference to Thanos wiping out half the universes population. The Eternals and Celestials have been around for millions of years. There could be thousands of Celestials getting ready to hatch around the universe. Earths population doubled in size between 1968 and 2020, that's what, 52 years or so? After Thanos wipes everything out it might take another 52 years to get back to 7.8 billion population. That's nothing compared to the millions of years the Eternals and Celestials have lived for.

Other complaints surround Ajak and how we don't know her and don't care about her when she does, people equating it to poorly written. I don't think we are meant to know or care for her, if the movie wanted us to know or care for her we would have spent more time with her. The point was to see that it impacted the Eternals themselves, as long as we understand how the Eternals feel the movie has done what it needed to do. On a similar point with a different movie, I don't know anyone that was sad or upset when Obi-Wan died in Star Wars and we spent the whole film with him, doesn't make the movie poorly written.

The story is just really dense and has a lot to take in, I want to experience it again.

I don't think anyone said it was the first black Marvel superhero, they said Black Panther was the first black MCU superhero feature film.
And I don't understand what the logic is behind these "filler" claims. Were Iron Man 1 and 2, Cap 1 and 2, Ant-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor 1 and 2,Captain Marvel and Black Panther all filler? What exactly do you mean by filler in the context of the MCU? The MCU is 85% "filler" if it's just the fact that a movie is based on a hero or group of heroes that aren't related or linked to the overarching story.

What happened to the Indian Ocean in the movie?

hmmmm
I think you might be looking into that a bit too much. Of course the MCU could change this but Atlantis in the comics is in the Atlantic Ocean. It would be weird to have Atlantis in the Indian Ocean.

The rumor is

the reason he's starting shit in BP2 is because of how the oceans were majorly fucked up in Eternals. There's giant marble fingers and a head sticking out of them now.

EH
Humanity isn't at fault for that, how could Namor think that they were. None of their technology would or could cause a giant robot/organic thing to come out of the planet. Doesn't make sense. If it wasn't for the Eternals, Atlantis wouldn't exist. I wouldn't put much faith in that rumour/"leak", much like the rumour of Shang Chi being a story about a tournament and introducing Omega Red, that was 100% false.

Bad movies in between of something good. Something Disney tries to buy time with. Something like Thor 2 or Iron man 2. So far after the ENDGAME I saw only fillers. Black Widow? Seriously? Eternals didn't impress me either... it's not that good. I say it's not good at all.

they said Black Panther was the first black MCU superhero feature film
Yeah, no. People definitely were ignoring/forgetting about Blade.
Some claimed Blade wasn't black enough. WaPo called him accidentally black. Basically calling him insignificant. Not saying everyone was like that, but I was pretty f annoyed by it.

Or they just didn’t know Blade was Marvel, the first movie at least didn’t even have an Marvel opening logo, just a credits mention, and Blade is FAR more obscure in the comics than X-men and Spider-man so the general public isn’t necessarily going to know.

And again, I think more people were just excited for the first black lead hero film within the MCU proper, not to mention the cast being predominantly black which was unheard of in not just superhero films but major blockbuster films in general. Yeah maybe a few random trolls were saying bullshit, but I highly doubt that was the case of the majority of moviegoers.

As for Phase 4, meh I don’t mind spending less time on build up, not every film needs to be setting up another potential apocalypse. Lord knows the DCEU got better when it stopped rushing towards big events. The Suicide Squad was my favorite movie of this year so far, and I wasn’t sitting there going, “ugh, no set up for the next JL villain? LAME!”

And personally, I’ll take Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and Eternals over IM 2 and Thor 2, as well as over Incredible Hulk ‘08 and Captain Marvel 1. Not that any of those films are bad either in my book, just mid to fairly good.

Not liking a movie doesn't make it filler, it just means it didn't work for you. Majority of solo super hero films don't add anything to the overarching story, majority of MCU films don't add anything to the overarching story. Most MCU movies only add to the overarching story via the end credit scenes, not the movies actual story itself. Most movies in the MCU stand on their own.

Of course, just like super hero movies outside of the MCU, it's generally good to watch movies in chronological order. You might be confused if you watch Thor 3, then 2, then 1. It's rare in the MCU where you have to watch 1 franchise to understand another franchise. One example being Iron Man 3, it's story deals with Tony's PTSD from the Avengers film and shows how he overcomes it.

Well, Eternals is not in the Top 10 and unlikely that it will get there. And I have said that Dune is a flop.

Why would Eternals be among the top 10 highest grossing movies of the year after a single weekend? Right now it's at #21. After this next weekend it'll probably be at #13. It could get there, maybe not...but as far as i know foreign numbers are superior to both Disney MCU movies already released so far this year.

I'm just sitting here laughing at Venom 2 just casually surpassing Shang Chi during this week to become the highest grossing comic book movie of the year WW...until Spider-Man is released that is. Then Sony will get the 2 most successful comic book movies of the year...both of them are Marvel / Disney properties.

If this isn't crazy to think about i don't know what is. Just a year ago no one would dare to make this prediction.

Just went to see it. Thought it was really good overall, I don't really get the boring comments or the bad reviews. Pretty sure I have seen two worse Marvel movies already this year. I mean you could argue that those were over rated but Eternals had actual stakes for the characters as well as the audience and a much better moral conundrum than say the stupid accords in civil war.
The extra large cast of 'heroes' did make it hard to connect with all of them fully, but Sersi was a decent anchor. I did get a chuckle out of Rob and Jon Stark both being in love with Cersei I mean Sersi.

Venom 2 was awful and I'm saying this as somebody who really likes Tom Hardy and LOVES Woody Harrelson.

I didn't think the Eternals was too long as it flushed out so many characters. Contrasting with that I felt Venom 2 was so rushed it was a disservice to the actors actually building any real chemistry on screen.

I thought Shang Chi was a fantastic and unique tale, very watchable movie, very cool fight scenes

Tom Holland as Spiderman in the teenage-angst type style has been like a super hero movie and romantic comedy all in one, I question if he can make 3 great ones, even the great Tobey couldn't do so. May find in both cases the second movie was the best.

Eternals - is the name of the movie because it goes on forever.

Also these "gods" interfered all the time, can't give them an engine, but gave them a plow. Basically Babylon was their creation and not Nebuchadnezzar. Movie is a complete mess IMO, and really just spends too much time in exposition that does not do or mean anything. They even have the characters explain the movie to you because you can't be trusted to figure out the Peter Pan analogy.

Flashbacks do not equal exposition. There are maybe 2 or 3 scenes that have exposition.

I am not sure what you’re arguing about. If Venom 2 is grossing more than MCU movies, surely it is a sign of the MCU movies not doing well.

And No Time To Die is overperforming as well, I suppose?
No time to die was already released in places Eternals won't including a 50M gross from China. And yes, no time to die's stability has been mentioned quite a lot actually.
Domestic when all is said and done Eternals will be ahead of NTTD. WW Eternals had a bigger debut I think. It all comes down to how fast it's going down on week 2.

Again, we keep comparing well established franchises with a new one for what reason? Look at Suicide Squad. Now that was a flop.

Or a sign that fewer people care now that the Thanos arc is done.

Plenty of pre-Infinity War movies made less than Venom 1. The first Venom movie was very successful box office-wise so naturally its sequel will likely follow suit and lo and behold it did. MCU films were never necessarily always the highest grossing of their release year, actually look at all the numbers of every MCU film in the past.

Did people just realize that Rotten Tomatoes is crap? And that an opinion is nothing more than ... an opinion?

It took time.
Well, an opinion is one thing but we have 319 critics with mostly the same opinion that the movie is very bad. So yeah it matters because it saves you money and time.

That's the thing, tho. 500 people could tell me something is crap (like people in this thread and my older brother) but after I've seen it, I come to my own conclusion that I liked it a lot! Which I did! Plenty of people on this forum have said something is hot crap and I usually go and see for myself... And I end up liking a bit more than they did or I like it A LOT! The inverse is true as well... Plenty have said how great a particular movie is but when I saw it... I turned it off after 10 mins and concluded that the movie was unenjoyable. Like a lot of European sadness porn.

Except you don't have 319 critics saying the movie is "very bad". If we're really doing this, you have 170 Rotten reviews and 150 Fresh ones. That's nearly 50/50. The chances of you enjoying this movie are almost as big as you not enjoying it. So you're on a limbo really.

All i know is in 2 years no one will be talking about the Black Widow movie which got a 79% and you'll probably get articles on how Eternals is an underrated MCU movie (kinda like you get for 2008 Hulk)

I am of the mindset of finding 1 reviewer that has very very similar tastes to you and going by their recommendations. I do use RT to get an idea of whether the movie has good general appeal. Though there are times when I loved a movie that was hated(looking at you Pootie Tang) but I knew not to take it serious before seeing it. Eternals may not get my movie theater money but I will eventually check it out.

This is the right way to use reviews. Never use them as gospel whether something is good or bad. See if it interests you and if it does, come to your own conclusions after watching it. If the reviews suggest that the game/show/movie doesn't interest you? Don't watch/play it, but also don't claim its terrible or amazing since you never experienced it.

Too many people use reviews and awards as gospel that something is good/bad or as validation on their purchase/opinion. Its childish.

I just came back from seeing it and I honestly want my money back. Those are 2 and a half hours of my life I can't get back. This was even worse than Black Widow, at least that movie had a couple of entertaining fight scenes.

I even wanted the "bad guy" if you can even called him that to win. Jolie was wasted, Salma Hayek was absolutely wasted, Jon Snow was wasted. The Eternals were all boring besides Gilgamesh, the Indian guy and to a lesser degree Rob Stark. Trash movie is trash.

Eternals is truly stable worldwide. I'm in Portugal and on its 2nd weekend everything is full. Seriously. It'll be Marvel's biggest movie outside of America this year tbh.

It's a shame it's tanking in America, maybe it won't drop so hard next weekend since nothing new is really out.

What's with all the weird world wide scheduling as of late? You'd think studios would want releases world wide same day. We have Last Night in Soho this week and then Venom 2 next week.

Not only is it out it might be the only way to see the Spider-Man trailer until the following week.

Sony is showing it at a fan event and the belief is they aren't releasing it online until the following Monday as an incentive to see Ghostbusters in theaters.

It's starting to look like it'll gross around the same as Shang Chi and more than Black Widow WW. Of course it won't gross what was expected before pandemic and before China cancelled Marvel movies from Disney for now...but it's aligned with the other MCU releases. It's about to hit 300M before it's first 2 full weeks at the movies. Not too shabby.

Finding Dory and Black Panther being higher than everything? Gotta be a Ly. (Still have no idea what it means. Is it this?).

I just saw it yesterday. Well I really enjoyed it. Not the best MCU movie but definitely closer to the top than to the bottom. I take it over Black Panther for example which is one of the highest rated MCU movie.

Anyway ! I liked the fight scenes and the visuals of the Eternals power. Each of them having specific power and make good use of it was really satisfying to see for me.

I really got some "Man of steel" vibe from Ikaris which really pleased me since the depiction of Superman in the DCEU is amazing for me (The overpowered being that is a hero but could be number one threat for the Earth).
Movie spoiler :I am sad that he will probably not see him again (but how knows... It's comics !)

Also I was waiting this movie to see the Celestial and I am not disappointed by their cosmic scale.

A bit disappointed by Kit Harrington character. He was just there to introduce his true character. By the way in which movies/serie Black Knight will appear ? I was sure there was a serie planned but can't find anything so I probably misremember.

Also a bit disappointed by the post credit scenes. Again a lot of setting up (ok we're still in the beginning of the phase 5 but with all the stuff seeded in the Series I am eager to see things coming together) but nothing exciting for me.

A reminder that after the 2nd weekend, this was how the BO looked for the MCU movies this year:

$282.4 - The Eternals
$264 - Black Widow
$257.6 - Shang Chi

Eternals is grossing faster than both other movies. It will probably surpass $350M by sunday worldwide. It's predicted to do around 12/13M in america, so it's almost sure to do over $37M internationally betweeh thursday and sunday, and i'm being too pessimistic here.
With thanksgiving next week and how stable it's doing internationally, i wouldn't be surprised if it surpasses $400M WW by the end of the weekend after.

Anyway, it's surpassing Black Widow and Dune somewhere during next week, to be right behind Shang Chi worldwide.

Shows how rotten tomatoes does nothing worldwide.
