According to some unnamed sources, MxO has been sold.

To Sony.

And except for 26 people, everyone's been given their 60 day notice. That includes event staff.

Here's to all the people looking for jobs. Good luck, gang.

Edit: Yes, it's true. The story has been quadruple confirmed by four seperate sources on the inside. Thanks to games.slash, Kotaku, Voodoo Extreme, Plaguelands, Factornews (bonjour, comment ça va?) and several message board threads.

Smedley: Hello MXO.

MXO: What do you want?

Smedley: I am the mmo architect. I created mmorpgs along with the internet and I have been waiting for you. Do you hear that sound? That is the sound of inevitability.

MXO: Fuck your inevitability - I know kung fu.

Smedley: You are here because Monolith’s reign on MXO is about to be destroyed. Its every living inhabitant terminated, most of the development team will be eradicated and those who remain will be consolidated into agents and being an anomaly you will be placed under the SOE all-in-one-shit-pass.

MXO: Fuck the shit platter. You won’t let it happen, you can’t let it happen. You need competitors too steal ideas from.

Smedley: Denial happens to be the most predictable of all human responses. But, rest assured, this will be the sixth time we have destroyed the mmo genre, and we have become exceedingly efficient in doing so.

MXO: The holy trinity!! NO!

Agent Brenlo: hahaha. Indeed, he is quicker than the others.

I don’t think SOE’s acquisition of MXO is necessarily a bad thing. I’m sure those who will be getting the ban-stick feel differently, but for the players if SOE ends up adding MXO to the all-access-pass it will only make their lineup more lucrative and overall the behemoth momentum the pass is gaining it happens to be best deal in mmo gaming right now, that is unless of course you actually enjoy anything in their lineup, but it will definitely expose more mmo players to MXO, which is a good thing in itself.

To give you an example, let's say a publisher comes to us and says, "We want licensed property X, and we're going to do this radical game design because we think it's really original and great." In order to accomplish this, they will need us to furnish them with the license, scripts, and access to talent, all in a timely fashion. Let's say that the game scores a 60. We then go into a room with the publisher and say, "Why did it score a 60?" If the publisher reminds us that we didn't provide the script on the agreed-upon day, in addition to failing to deliver xyz goods, how are the developers supposed to make a good game? Of course, the responsibility falls on us, and we can't penalize someone for that.

It looks like he knew Matrix Online was going to suck and was creating a loophole to not have to fine Monolith:

Hmm... This is bad news probably, I actually still like MxO and I think that the developers had a really good grasp on what the matrix was all about and how to keep it conceptually interesting in the game. I am curious to see what SOE will do with a game that relies heavily on a fanbase that plays the game primarily for the evolving story-line and in-game events, hopefully the people who were in charge of those things will remain.
