McDonald's is asking fans to build their own burger for a chance to make the menu but only in Chicago.

Calling it "Chicagoland's Burger Build Off," fans who live in the area can visit BurgerBuildoff.com to create their own burger (you can still build you own burger if you don't live in the area but won't be able to enter the contest).

Some of the customization options are ingredients, like apple slices and a pretzel bun, that have never been seen as part of a burger on the McDonald's menu here in the U.S.

Here are all the available burger-building options:

Buns include: pretzel bun, artisan roll, Big Mac bun, bakery style whole grain bun, regular whole grain bun, Quarter Pounder bun, regular hamburger bun, and ciabatta bun.

Beef options include: up to two Quarter Pounder beef patties and up to three regular beef patties.

Cheeses include: American, cheddar, feta, pepper jack, shaved parmesan, shredded cheddar jack, smoked Gouda, Swiss, and White Cheddar.

Toppings include: applewood smoked bacon, Canadian bacon, chili lime tortilla strips, crispy onions, cranberry raisin blend, guacamole, crispy jalapenos, pickled jalapenos, pico de gallo, sliced apples, sliced dill pickles, and fries.

Vegetable choices include: arugula, a baby spinach-baby kale blend, green leaf lettuce, grilled onions, mushrooms, sliced avocado, sliced cucumber, shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced red onions, sliced tomatoes, slivered white onions, and Southwest salad blend.

Finally, sauces include: BBQ sauce, buttermilk ranch, cilantro lime glaze, creamy Dijon mustard, creamy garlic, creamy peppercorn, habanero ranch, ketchup, marinara, mayo, mustard, special sauce (AKA Mac sauce), spicy Buffalo sauce, spicy mayo, sweet and sour sauce, sweet chili, tangy honey mustard, and tartar sauce.

Basically, you can choose from any ingredient regularly stocked in the McDonald's test kitchen.

Additionally, you can choose a background to frame your burger, name it, and share it via social media in hopes of getting your friends to vote for it.

According to the Chicago Business Journal, the two winning burgers will appear on the menu at McDonald's restaurants in the Chicago and Northwest Indiana region.

Voting begins August 24, 2015 and ends September 13, 2015. The top 10 vote-getters will be made into burgers for a panel of judges who will determine the two burgers that actually go on the menu for a limited time from November 30, 2015 through December 27, 2015. From there, the burger that sells the best will be crowned the winner.

The grand prize for the contest is a check for $5,000 and a trip for the winner and up to three guests to Universal Orlando.

First the pizzas, and then the burgers.

Chicago stay winning.

The burgers will taste like refuse regardless

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I'm really curious why you make so many threads about McDonalds. Are you on some kind of feed for McDonalds news? :p

This has been a staple of Germany McDs for ages. Was a one-off at first, then gradually the customer-designed burgers got more common and by now, they're available pretty much all year round. Mostly it's no better than the other fare, since the configurator is actually pretty limited in terms of what you can combine. Things like a specific order of layers which has to be adhered to :/ .

Curious how that hasn't made it stateside until now.

Xia handles all of the fast food news threads in general.

There's not a new taco, pizza, or sandwich out there that escapes the gaze from his greasy and deep fried tower.

Ah, I guess I've just noticed the McDonalds ones.

My super simple reviews:

Rio crisp burger: should become a standard. It reminds me a lot of some of the special burgers Wendy's has had. Highly recommended, much better than a standard McDonald's burger. The bun is great.

Chitown burger: imagine McDonald's made the whopper. You'd probably prefer the original, and you'd be right to. But if you are at McDonald's, it's a solid choice over their standard burgers. Just nothing special.
