It really is the modern day Saturn. It gets that same kind of awesome b-tier Japanese game.

But it'll last longer than the Saturn did, Sony doesn't have a Dreamcast waiting in the wings to put it out to pasture, and cross-developing for both it and PS4 seems to be pretty manageable for most developers. It'll likely outsell the Wii U by the time it's all said & done.
I'd agree that Vita does mirror Saturn in many ways but saying it's the modern Saturn really does a discredit to that system. Saturn never had as strong a push from 3rd parties as Vita enjoyed and in fact the system's success was primairily 1st party driven. Plus it was seen as a nice Japanese achievement for Sega selling 5.5m in less than 5 years and coming off a 3.5m predecessor. The same really can't be said of Vita.

when all you hear for the first two years of the system release is that the system is dead on arrival, doing terrible, will be discontinued soon then every little milestone is going to look like a small success for some people. obviously that doesn't change the fact that the system as a whole is a failure.
Was anyone really saying the system was doa? I thought pre-launch expectations for Vita were somewhat bullish given the competitive pricepoint, stronger early 3rd party commitments and the possibility it might still see Monster Hunter?

i remember seeing those as soon as Nintendo announced MH for 3ds alongside a huge price cut and super mario and mario kart right before the Vita launch. That was a great move by nintendo to shut down any sort of momentum the vita had before launch.

Vita was coming from PSP late years that was beating DS at sales and support. Even If you weren't following these threads back then it's not hard to understand what expectations were from many. Let's not talk for Sony forecast in the beginning.

Monster Hunter Vita and Vita beating 3DS this/next year were very common.

I definitely think that if MH4 hadn't work on 3DS as it did, a Vita version would have been a reality, for us. No kidding.

I still believe MH on Vita would have produced a very very different outcome. I believe that one game would have increased vita sales by 30-50%. It's like not having COD on your machine in the west. Even if you aren't into the franchise, the lack of it on a particular console IMO makes it the automatic 2nd choice handheld. One of the biggest blunders Sony ever made with Vita, even bigger than the memory sticks and Demons Soul Ip.

I do think PS classics was the right move though and many Gaffers seemed to think it was some huge mistake. Time will tell, but I think re-releasing the thousands of PS2 titles gives them new exposure and spotlight, makes more money off the store and directly to publishers, and helps if a publisher is bringing back an old franchise. I don't think most of us want a collection of 4000+ games from all generations and would likely cherry pick what we really are going to go back and play. Always felt B/C was hugely overrated. It's just nice at launch

Guys, I clicked a 2012 MC thread!

MH Stories is definitely coming to Vita, just look at those hig res screenshot it can't be 3DS and we now know that the NX home console will come first, Vita also now have a very kid friendly audience thanks to Minecraft so the writing is on the wall, really.

Yeah, Vita reminds me of Saturn and PC Engine software-wise, similar sales too. Incidentally, Vita recently passed PC Engine (all models 4.94m) according to Media Create, still a bit behind according to Famitsu.

MH Stories is on 8th October, also amiibo.... wat

Monster Hunter Stories out on October 8th in Japan. Will get three amiibo figures: protagonist + monster (male / female), Nabiru.

Source: http://www.4gamer.net/games/298/G029812/20160526046/

One month before Pokémon. I don't see when else they could've released the game, to be honest. And I guess the anime will start in October, then.

I guess this means their co-marketing campaign is only growing stronger, that's a huge leap and puts Stories as the first major studio with amiibo support and branding from Nintendo. (Shovel Knight being the first, obviously.) Cpacom is the first major Japanese party involved with it, now, directly.

But given when this is launching, are they going to launch MHGX in March? Is it some other super-secret title that no one has worked on (since all the major teams are accounted for)?

Kinda surreal to see a Famicom game currently ranked No.3 and No.9 on Amazon Japan LOL.

BTW in case you didn't know, Kira Kira Star Night DX is an awesome looking indie action game for Famicom and compatible systems.

HALLY soundtrack? Damn, I'm hoping there'll be an English release of this. Or even the Japanese release, any good way of purchasing that if you're American?

Things would be different, there is no doubt for that. But history has written Nintendo secured Monster Hunter these crucial years.

I see Darius and sense got banned, shoking.

What was the reason for Gaist Crusher's failure? Or are there any similarities between Monster Hunter Stories and Gaist Crusher?

No idea why Gaist Crusher failed to be honest, but it's one of a couple on 3DS that tried to follow Youkai as a cross-media franchise and failed.

As for Monster Hunter, it was apparently a comparison thrown around when the game was first revealed:

The new game combines Capcom's "expertise in producing content for children," gained through years of Mega Man games, and the "high-grade multiplayer capability that generated a strong response for the Monster Hunter series."

Less a similarity and more a difference, that may end up being key in the fate of MHStories, is that Nintendo seems much more involved this time around if the Amiibo are any indication. Hiska is also right that the timing would be suitable for a coming price-drop which could really light a fire for MHStories.

While Capcom may not be great at making a "family friendly" or approachable title nor have they seen any real successes there, but Nintendo is damn good at it. Splatoon is testament to that fact.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw them do more together than just the amiibo (and maybe a price drop) to that end in terms of marketing, support, and audience push. It would also be a smart thing of Nintendo to do if they want to not fumble away their amicable relationship with Capcom over the brand as Sony did those many years ago.

Nintendo's still doing the special edition support in the west and pushing it with directs and other media exposure, which they generally keep for themselves or what they consider important titles. So they are clearly keen on building on the franchise for themselves.

A few S-E mobile updates/news:

- Valkyrie Anatomia tops 1 million downloads (this is a bit old, but it shows where most of the audience truly is - are you surprised? embrace the mobile lords already - anyway, the game is not close to being a big hit or anything, but it stayed for most part of the release month on the Top 50, so it's doing ok I guess). - http://gematsu.com/2016/05/valkyrie-anatomia-tops-one-million-downloads

- Samurai Rising is releasing on June 2nd. Site was updated: http://samurai-rising.jp/

- KINGDOM HEARTS UNCHAINED χ Surpasses Four Million Downloads in North America and Japan (could this become a hit worldwide? It's not huge in Japan, but it does quite well on some events) - http://www.jp.square-enix.com/company/ja/news/2016/html/0a3353ba58022c3babe156eea1db667f.html

- It's Dragon Quest 30th anniversary and then Hoshidora reaches the top spot on mobile charts. The game recently reached 10 million downloads - http://www.jp.square-enix.com/company/ja/news/2016/html/eeeb12e6b0aa8edcea0ded69edb63521.html

https://www.appannie.com/apps/ios/top-chart/japan/overall/?device=iphone

- Kumapara is a flop. Don't know what I'm talking about? Yeah, because it's a flop (for now).

Vita was DOA in the west certainly but you know what I think hurt the Vita in Japan just as much if not more than losing Monster Hunter?

No UMD Drive.

3DS was fully bc and and soon as it came out it basically killed all sales of the DS immediately.

Vita was not fully bc because it lacked a UMD drive in a country that had a strong physical game presence. PSP continued to sell for years after the Vita launched.

That just tells me that UMD was the wrong format to choose for the PSP, not that the Vita made a bad choice ditching it.

[PS4] [PSV] [PS3] Dragon Quest Heroes II: Futago no Ou to Yogen no Owari <RPG> (Square Enix) - Friday release, expected drop. Sales will be mainly from the PS4 version, but Vita version will fight too.

[PS4] Overwatch <ACT> (Square Enix) (¥7.800) - more than 80% (3 days tracked) shipment is not big, though

[PS4] [PS3] Guilty Gear Xrd: Revelator # <FTG> (Arc System Works) (¥6.800) - 50%

[PSV] Cladun Sengoku <RPG> (Nippon Ichi Software) (¥4.800) - 40%

Personally I don't think it's that bad. Nearly all of the games released during PSP's later years were available digitally and UMD Passport program made it easier to own digital versions of your existing games.

Because relying on a proprietary format that nobody uses and you ditch with the next version is poor planning?
All game carts/cards are proprietary format anyway. The UMD was great during its time as it allowed console quality games. Games like Monster Hunter probably wouldn't have been possible on PSP if it used cards.

Yeah, I used that to get quite a few PSP games digitally on my Vita. Great program. It was cheap, 100 to 2400 yen per game depending on the game and publisher (most around 1000 yen, iirc). Afterward, I would just sell the UMD on ebay or whatever, and keep the cheap digital version.

According to Media Create, this week 249.000 units of software were sold. It's the worst result since Week 20, 2015 (May 11 - May 17), that only 235.000 units of software were sold. Also, that week was recorded as the worst in the japanese game industry.

It's a boring, mediocre game clearly made for the sole purpose of selling toys. I tried the demo on the eShop and I have no idea why they expected it to do gangbusters. It's a lazy, cynical attempt at reaching kids.

Yep, I remember buying a 256mb memory card for like £60 back then. 2GB cards? no chance.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deadline: June 01 2016 09:00 am (EST)

Attention:
  • Remember for some games it's not only the 1st week.
  • Multiplatform entries are the combined available sales of each platform described

Rules:
  • Do not edit your post after the deadline. If you do, you'll be disqualified.
  • The official monthly hardware sales will be the sum of weekly numbers for all versions of the system available from Famitsu.
  • The official monthly software sales will be the latest total or the sum of the weekly numbers if the title is release before the period available from the Famitsu Top 30.
  • The official monthly sales for multi-platform releases will be the combined available sales of each platform shown in the title entry.
  • The official monthly sales for games with multiple versions will be the combined available sales of each version shown in the title entry.
  • Any game missing in the Famitsu top 30 will be taken out of the predictions.

Note: This month I didn't follow Famitsu calendar since I have added an extra week to include Super Robot Taisen OG: The Moon Dwellers. July prediction league will be just fine with Yo-Kai Watch 3: Sushi / Tempura, Puzzle & Dragons X: Kami no Shou / Ryuu no Shou, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA and Toukiden 2.

Good to know that Senran Kagura did well overseas. Bring on Valkyria Drive.
Yeah, Estival Versus is hugely successful in US according to their fact sheet. Happy to see this series continue to do well.

Furthermore, U.S. subsidiary Marvelous USA, Inc. posted repeat-sales of the year-earlier launched "STORY OF SEASONS (Nintendo 3DS)" along with hugely successful sales of "SENRAN KAGURA ESTIVAL VERSUS (PS Vita/PS4)" launched on March 15, 2016, resulting in the subsidiary's highest sales on record to date.

Damn there really banking on XV
and Deus Ex I guess.
Also there growing in mobile space.

From the presentation:

This slide shows our FY2017/3 lineup. It includes only those titles for which we have already announced launch dates. We expect our biggest FY2017/3 title to be FINAL FANTASY XV, which has already racked up an impressive volume of pre-orders worldwide

We'll be interesting to see how FF will perform in Japan and around the world.
