Media Create Sales: Week 20, 2016 (May 16 - May 22)

Year of Pokemon continues. It doesn't look the expected battle with Yo-kai Watch will be a real battle.

The only competition for Sun / Moon is if it will match X / Y and how further from it it will go (which is also the target for YW3 comparing to YW2).

Is there a reason why people expect Sun / Moon sell more than X / Y in Japan? Wouldn't that be first time ever that second generation Pokemon games on same handheld would outsell the first gen?

Find an affordable portable storage solution for 2gb of data circa 2004.

A PSP without UMD would've been a vastly different platform.

Why did you need 2gb of storage for a handheld game in 2004? Which games took advantage of that regularly?

Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire is a few k away from outselling Fire Red / Leaf Green at Famitsu, if it hasn't already since digital estimates are from August.

[GBA] Pokemon Fire Red / Leaf Green # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.){2004.01.29} (¥3.620)- 955.337 / 3.076.047
[3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire # <RPG> (Pokemon Co.){2014.11.21} (¥4.571) - 1.534.593 / 2.987.596
[3DS] Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire (ε) _Nintendo eShop Download Version_ |DL| <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2014.11.21} (¥4.571) - 33.524 / 75.438

Point wouldn't be whether the file sizes were big enough for 2004, but whether they'd last throughout the course of the console's lifespan. Aside from that though, Liberty City Stories has a massive file size right off the bat (that was 2005 I think, same year console released in the west).

ROM storage increases over time. At PSP's launch DS cards maxxed out at 64MB but by the end of PSP's lifecycle we had 4GB 3DS and Vita cards.

The issue was more immediate I think. PSP would've been a much different platform in 2004-2008 without that level of storage for games.

Square just released their Outline of Results from FY 2016.

http://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/ir/library/docs/160512/page01.html

Nirolak usually makes some threads since it's a nice read :)

Thanks. There's not too much new there given everything is going fine for them, but it's worth noting that they're planning to make more premium mobile games because they make solid profits over time and get sales boosts whenever a new title in the series releases.

This includes more original mobile games (instead of just ports of existing ones) and they compare their target scope to handheld titles.

I made a much more detailed spin-off thread here, but feel free to use this thread if for business talk if you prefer: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1224606

On a somewhat related note, Samurai Rising, Square Enix's newest attempt at the co-op mobile action RPG genre, releases on June 2nd. This is probably their most notable title since last Fall in terms of development effort.

Here's the launch trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9sCYpjUl_A

These are the types of projects I feel like we're going to be seeing Nintendo try to also "get" on their platform, titles that are effectively fully fledged handheld titles (perhaps with controller changes, or the NX is outright going to sport a full capacitive touchscreen). And the more these projects modernize, the more they will simply move out of reach of the aging capabilities of the Vita. I think we're going to see the landscape reduce more and more to mobile (digital), mobile/handheldNX (digital, digital/retail), handheldNX (digital/retail) with the middle being the happy medium for the companies involved.

The "mobile-friendly" titles, the F2P variety, I think will remain mobile or mostly mobile as that is their "home environment" and they are easy to access, and accessed in quick bite sized chunks that are suitable for the phone + phone-battery considerations.

That amount of storage was pretty much required to support PSP's ambition of offering PS2-level experiences.

While it's true that most PSP games didn't use UMD to its full capacity (there are only three 2 UMD games), many used enough space to where a flash storage solution would have been financially and technically infeasible. For example, Ridge Racers on PSP (remember that one?) was a 2004 launch title. Its >500MB file size makes it larger than the largest DS release.

UMD wasn't a faultless format; they were fragile, noisy, created long load times, and made it difficult to transfer that library to its successor. However, they were a necessary evil for what PSP wanted to be. UMDs offered developers and publishers a very cheap (cost of manufacturing, and later PSN, were the reasons why PSP saw so many late-era localizations vs. DS) and spacious venue to make games.

It actually sounds like Sony made a bad choice to ditch UMD for VITA.

I'd wonder what brought about that design change. Perhaps costs of producing or continuing production of UMDs was impractical? Perhaps it was bad investment in R&D to make it a better format (see: takao's list of faults).

What's the deal of release a bundle when you're not shipping units to stores?
Then I see the price and think, oh well, that's what they're planning.

Btw, this bundle doesn't seem to be limited according to Nintendo's website. So this could be a Super Mario Maker Bundle killer.

I honestly have to imagine that the WiiU actually is/has gotten more expensive for them to make (for various reasons, not least of which being its outdated and "frozen" dev node).

Or they will use the WiiU's rising price to subsidize the 3DSs price-drop! Brilliant!

Another Splatoon bundle, this time not limited?

Too bad coming only now, it could have done nice numbers last year. :-/

Still, will boost Splatoon, and since is not limited, Splatoon will continue to chart and chart and chart. :p

I don't know if it's more ridiculous a system which becomes more expensive bundle after bundle or a bundle with a game released 12 months ago, showing how poor has been the Wii U line-up in the last year...

Splatoonmania doesn't stop. Nintendo riding the Splattrain all the way to NX.

They've been real good in keeping it going with all the events, fan stuff, and the still-going free support and community.

Its... weird.

They probably know that, while already a huge franchise, it can grow even further on a better console than Wii U, sales-wise...I suppose.

They've been real good in keeping it going with all the events, fan stuff, and the still-going free support and community.

Its... weird.

They probably know that, while already a huge franchise, it can grow even further on a better console than Wii U, sales-wise...I suppose.
I think they're also trying to stick in line with industry expectations for service games in 2016.

Battlefield 4 was released in 2013 and was still holding new events in March with all the DLC being given away for free after that. It's what helped them keep 9.4 million people still playing Battlefield titles in Q1 of this year.

Maintaining support throughout is very healthy for series' long term prospects.

Oh, mind I am not arguing it is bad or poorly thought out. I am coming more from it at an angle of, well, excellence. Splatoon's support from/with respect to the community and the development has been nothing short of superb in Japan (even decent in the west where it isn't some mega-superhit). The devs of it have been also very open and forth coming which is... kind of bizarre for Nintendo's general more reserved nature. Even if they have really pushed the whole developer interviews with Iwata Asks and the Directs, this and, strangely, #FE (I am half expecting a sequel at this point, bizarrely), have been very open.

The various Koshiens have been great, the concerts, etc. Support for the game itself started free and, aside from Amiibo, remained free. And then the Amiibo and music side of things have been handled rather well.

And given their Splatfest numbers and turn-outs, and the fact that Splatoon is still a widely discussed topic, it must be working damn well.

Also, I think they are keenly aware of not Level-5ing the franchise. This was my other observation. There's plenty of merchandising for the game, now, but it honestly took ages for something as obvious as the twin's amiibo.

We expecting anything splatoon at NX launch? Or the first 6 months.

I disagree with people's reasoning for a MK8 enhanced port.
I'm eh on a Smash Port that people suggest. (Partly cause I don't think the graphics can be easily improved. But the dlc would be the selling point I guess)

But I highly agree with Splatoon getting an enhanced port. Then you'd have something to hold people over until the sequel came

The new Splatoon amiibo were the best selling thing on Rakuten, even rivalizing with other products sold on Books. The previous entry was re-stocked also.

Well, it's not just amiibo figures they had to manufacture, they also had to prepare the in-game content that goes with it (and datamined data shows they've been working on it for a while now). Not to mention they composed two new songs for it. The figures also tied to the live concerts they did (which also took a while to prepare, I assume), since the new songs were introduced during the second live.

So I don't think they didn't want to "Level-5ing" their IP, they also couldn't go any faster. Well I guess they could have done it faster if they had planned it beforehand, but I doubt they thought everything about Splatoon would get popular like it did. They clearly believed it would work (given how much they pushed the game before launch), but to the point where there'd be live concerts?

Talking of live concerts, I'm totally expecting an actual, full-fledged (paid) concert sometime after Splatoon NX launch or something (don't think there's enough songs for that at the moment). They did it for Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (granted, it was with avex), so I could see that for Splatoon too.

By the way, there was the GungHo Festival 2016 today. They announced some stuff for the game:

Puzzle & Dragons X + Monster Hunter Stories collaboration (August 10th): Rathalos and Nargacuga appearing as monsters in-game, with Soul Armour craftable from them.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/EHZSijaHOHU

Puzzle & Dragons X songs and characters in Taiko Drum Master: Dokodon! Mystery Adventure (same day as PXDX):

Commercial: https://youtu.be/pqMfyv2uYPU

Trailer for the anime series: https://youtu.be/NNJCjt8M7IM

There's more stuff (including the D-Gear and Armour Drops toys from Takara Tomy, launching on the same day, and unlocking Soul Armour stuff in-game): http://www.4gamer.net/games/325/G032501/20160529002/

Disclaimer: videos above were recorded by me. (No official upload available at the moment).

By the way, the segment about the Monster Hunter Stories collaboration was amusing. Ryozo Tsujimoto was on stage to introduce it, and the thing basically turned into a Monster Hunter Stories presentation for a few minutes. Pretty amusing how the hijacked the GungHo presentation for their game (yeah I know it was planned, but I still find that bit amusing).

With all this, I'm curious to see how PxD X is going to perform. It's coming out two weeks after Yo-kai Watch 3, so it's going to be pretty, pretty rough for it.

I don't know if it's more ridiculous a system which becomes more expensive bundle after bundle or a bundle with a game released 12 months ago, showing how poor has been the Wii U line-up in the last year...

Definitely the former. There's nothing wrong with bundling an old game if the game is appealing. The 2DS in the US is bundled with Mario Kart 7 and there's been plenty of great games since December 2011, it's just that it's a must-have. Splatoon is also a must-have.

The price, though, is shameful. Very, very risky of Nintendo to take the route of selling a minuscule amount of systems at a high profit when they're in such a dangerous situation and their next system is make-or-break. Personally, I think it's the wrong move. They should have worried about mindshare and not short-term profit.

Never knew that. Which games used more than one UMD?
