Media Create Sales: Week 21, 2016 (May 23 - May 29)

Cladun comparison? Pretty sure it's always been a tiny franchise, wondered why NIS were continuing with it to be honest.

sold around half of the previous titles
the huge amount of bugs killed the sales, it took 5 days to be patched
changing the developer seems like it was not a good idea

good job N1....

DQ fanbase is mainly on 3DS and from will come the biggest part of DQXI sales, so it's not really a problem the release of so many spin-offs mainly on Sony platforms lately. Joker 3 proved a problematic release in the end but it wont play big part.

This guy, Chris, is such a strange poster.

Why is everybody so hopeful about the next handheld of Nintendo. That market has been hit harder this last gen then the home console market, it went from 50m+ (PSP/ DS) to 25m (PSV/ 3DS). Sony probably won't even release a new one and there is no indication whatsoever that Nintendo's next handheld can stop the bleeding, let alone compensate for Sony's exit. The 3DS underperforming coming from the DS (especially software) is one of the under reported stories this last gen on this board, the WiiU failure overshadowed it i guess.

Sure compared to the ridiculousness of DS sales, 3DS sales are lacking in Japan. But still the hardware sales of 3DS in Japan were really good in 2011-2013 (4M, 5.6M, 4.9M) and were higher yearly sales than EVERYTHING but the DS's best 2 years. Sure it's a drop, but considering how badly everything else dropped and the introduction of mobile, that's still very very good.

This guy, Chris, is such a strange poster.

He's not wrong.

After multiple entries, the PS4/PS3/Vita audience has remained static and much smaller than any of the remakes and are barely matching the meh release of Joker, while DQVIII "port" is far ahead. (The audience on the 3DS has generally had more... DQ-like games on it also. The audience is well catered to there.) Had you not added the Vita, Heroes 2 would have probably completely cratered from the first entry. If anything, these spin-offs have been met with attrition from the fanbase that SE has been trying to lure to the console space for the long-term (and for their return on investment for spending the money on making a second version of DQXI for the PS4 for which they'd hope to have a meaningful audience to sell to).

The main audience is still on the 3DS, or at least there is no indication of a mass "growth" of the DQ audience on the PS4/PS3/Vita beyond what was accomplished at the ~zenith~ of the DQH initial release. Builders and Heroes 2 have since flat-lined. There's no real indicator of meaningful growth occurring.

Vita and PS3 won't even be included with DQXI so, if you remove them, the lone PS4 is absolutely dwarfed by the 3DS in terms of the "DQ" fanbase. The PS3 being all but dead at this point also means the majority of its active audience has transitioned or left the dedicated market and the last remnants will peter out over the coming months. The Vita audience has shown, much to Sony's continued dismay, that they don't seem to want a home console. So there's not going to be much "gain" there when the DQXI release comes about.

NX whatever being an added mystery.

Bad numbers for Guilty Gear, but it was expected, SIGN didn't set the world in fire and GG is niche FG, BB always had more appeal plus more marketing and cross-media support. Looking forward to read Central Fiction sale numbers, CP did very well.

I did a lot better than in April. I was definitely confident in my DQH predictions though not UC4. I should have been a lot more realistic with UC4, it was not going to crack 200k...

Damn I was disqualified, otherwise I was pretty good as a newbie.

I don't want to take a bet on June because I never heard of most of the games on the list.

just 2 things I'd like to point out :

PS34V userbase is not as wide as 3DS one, even if you consider all the PS3, but I really doubt that there are still 10mln users active on the platform
so comparing 20mln to... 8-9 (?) is not fair
DQ users didn't have problems to switch to PS1 for DQ7 and again they didn't get angry when DQ9 was announced on DS
so if this concept is clear I don't understand how you can compare Joker 3 with DQH2
how many titles in the last 2 years sold more than 600k on PS34V ?
I really don't understand those cross platform comparisons, if game X sells better on system A than game Y on system B there could be a lot if reasons, but if game X sells worst than game Y on system A (as DQH2 did) then you can try to find the reasons

2nd thing : if DQH2 was not released on Vita do you really think that those 120k didn't buy the game?
Actually I think that a lot of PS3 users moved to the Vita, I mean more than to PS4; this summer will probably show if PS4 is in "healthy" conditions cause a bunch of important titles will be released (Tales, P5, FF15) and we'll see if the Vita userbase will finally make the big step (and I have this feeling cause Vita line-up for the incoming months is very weak)

I think its perfectly fair for a known brand. SE was even banking on the brand power to draw more into the console space (hence the whole shebang when DQH was first introduced and "coming back home" nonsense) and to some degree they succeeded with DQH. People know what Dragon Quest is, if they were interested in what SE was offering, they could have picked up the console. This isn't some mystery product or brand. The sequels to the spin-offs or after WoM have spread even less so.

The titles were meant to grow the audience in preparation for DQXI on the PS4 to not be a total fart in the wind. In as of so far, I don't think they've succeeded in moving much of the audience, hence why I was making comparisons. They moved or attracted *some* audience with DQ brand and DQH, and then failed to expand beyond that point.

The size of the audience of a given platform certainly puts a lid on the total sales potential, but not on a barometer of "fan presence", not for a very known and loaded brand. Just because the audience number if big doesn't mean all of them care or are interested. In fact the larger the audience, the more casual (in play, interest, and spending) it starts to lean. Whereas a smaller, concentrated audience would be much more core (more buying and playing) oriented.

But my point was, ultimately, that the attempt to move the audience hadn't shown much long-term growth. The comparison to Joker 3 or the remakes was more to accentuate the point that, even after several releases, the sales figures haven't climbed and certainly haven;t reached even the "bad" numbers for Joker 3 and its hilariously bad marketing, presence, and... product quality, they've just gone down and then flat-lined. A moving audience would be indicated by healthier successive sales. To that end, I argue that the audience has failed to move per expectation or hope and remains seated on the 3DS. (And had the Vita not been introduced for DQH2, it would have gone down even further.)

2nd thing : if DQH2 was not released on Vita do you really think that those 120k didn't buy the game?

All of them? Certainly not. Would a large chunk (in addition to the current drop) of sales have been missing? Most certainly.

The reason for the introduction of the Vita was to stave off an even harder collapse. Seemingly, it wasn't a move that Sony was all that keen on either as they preferred to pretend that the Vita and PS3 versions of the game didn't exist.

The PS4's just not as anemic and/or dead as everything else in the market at the moment aside from the 3DS. Moreover, I am starting to doubt a "slim" coming to market given the rumored reasons for the Neo's existence (and not a hint of slim info out there for the PS4 but for the X1), so I expect the system to sharply fall behind the PS3 when the PS3 Slim hit the market. And I really don't think the Vita audience is going to transition, I think that's a well that Sony poisoned. They are largely going to lose that audience, either to mobile, to attrition, or to a new handheld.

For 1,845 (132 Nintendo) titles released in its lifetime, the DS sold:
21,358 ten thousands (or 213.6 million) units of software in Japan.
At peak, it sold 50 million units of software in a year.
LTD is 33 million units of hardware.

For 534 (62 Nintendo) titles released in its lifetime, the 3DS has sold in as of so far:
10,560 ten thousands (or 105.6 million) units of software in Japan*.
At peak, it sold 25 million units of software in a year.
LTD is 21.2 million units of hardware.

For 3DS it will be ~20m of software and ~2m of hw for 2016.

At 2017 hw will see big drop and sw depends on how much cross-platform with new handheld there will be.

Seemingly, it wasn't a move that Sony was all that keen on either as they preferred to pretend that the Vita and PS3 versions of the game didn't exist.

Gonna be standard procedure going forward really, they're going to try and siphon as much userbase from Vita as they can before the handheld line dies out. I can't see devs dropping it any time soon though given the splits we're seeing between platforms.

Toukiden 2 is the next one I'm expecting to see a PS4 push despite it making little sense.

Yeah, I described badly, missed a word. Meant to say (like some weeks ago here) that despite looking cartoony, it's not going for an "everyone" audience. It's not Splatoon, it's aiming for something really specific that is closing some doors in Japan.
It's not your usual western shooter, and it's also not something that can attract everyone either.

I really don't agree with This, at all.

Overwatch is a shooter which has in my opinion an immense audience... I would Say even bigger than Splatoon.

It's perfect for kids, don't See why not, that cartoony style is perfect for that audience, and as well even adults Can enjoy it a lot.

In my opinion OverWatch is one of The bigger Game You Can have, The potential of This Game is huge.

And 90% sell-through for Overwatch.

Isnt that cat game sold more than 200k on eshop alone? I believe some hit on eshop is not something rare here if u ask me.

Since Famitsu starting estimating digital sales at September 2013 there have been some good sellers that entered monthly top 30. Total sales should be a few millions but nothing special.

Keep in my mind I'm talking about the japanese audience, not a WW one. Different opinion on this one since this is heavily influenced by regional culture.

But why japanes kids should not like it as wester kids? Honest question.

Both west/japan kids love Splatoon

I guess so. But considering how Nintendo digital platform is keep increasing each year maybe in the future, that number is going to be even more bigger.^~^

Because there is nothing else to put hope in.

Remember Cube Creator 3D? The Minecraft clone on Nintendo 3DS?

Looks like the great JP sales of the game really helped the studio that made it:

When "Cube Creator" was released for the American market on April 23, 2015 (just before it landed in Japan on July 15), it didn't sell very well. This followed Patterson's previous game not selling very well, and a business deal falling through. The deal would have expanded Patterson's studio from two full-time staff members and five part-time workers to 18 full-time staffers.

***

Thankfully, "Cube Creator 3D" struck a chord with Japanese gamers, selling 10 times as many copies as it had in America.

"All of a sudden it was, not hallelujah money, or winning the lottery, but it was like, 'OK, a door has opened. We can at least move forward,'" Patterson said.

In fact, the game sold so well, it even allowed them to get a meeting with Nintendo (don't think many western indie get that, at least not with NCL):

And in a combo of both business success and personal pride, Nintendo invited Big John Games and its Japan region publishing partner, Arc System Works, to a meeting to discuss upcoming projects and partnerships. Big John Games may even have early access to Nintendo's upcoming home console, the clandestine Nintendo NX, which would allow the company to create a "Cube Creator" type of game for that platform, as well.

At this rate it looks like the PS4 might overtake the WiiU by year's end. 3 months ago I wouldnt have thought it was that soon. How quickly the paradigm shifts.

How much has Cube Creator 3D sold total?

I don't think we ever got any concrete number (maybe mpl90 has something).

But anyway, really goes to show how well a proper Minecraft, at retail, would have done on 3DS. Even now, Battleminer (another Minecraft clone that's been selling better than CC3D since launch) still remain in the eShop Top 10 week after week.

Well, purposefully undershipping your console will do that, yeah.

A simpler way to look at it is Square Enix has sold more than 2 million Dragon Quest games on PlayStation across 3 titles in 16 months. This is after the series was absent during more than 10 years. I don't know about the growth thing or the comparison with 3DS, but it looks like a judicious move to me, especially with those games coming in the west for us to play :)

Different artstyle and personality. Overwatch is really comic book and pixar/dreamworks influenced, whether Splatoon is really going for an original artstyle with a closer japanese aesthetic (and without any language).
I'm not saying the former is not appealing, but it's one of those things that are more appealing by having more references in mind. And I'm not even talking about the genre and skillset differences.

------------

There were almost nothing interesting regarding releases during this week. However, there were some other things that I wanted to point out.

There still are 2DS out there, but in a very limited quantity.

Yo-Kai Watch 3 pre-orders were not moving so well, but adverts are quite big at some stores.

Monster Hunter 4 is at 100yen at Takarajima Stores.

Dragon Quest Heroes II still has presence in Bic Camera, as in this elevator.

Korea and Taiwan/Hong Kong versions of Dragon Quest Builders sold over 100K copies in less than a month according to producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto.

It shows that Dragon Quest has the franchise power to sell on any console (except Xbox one) in Japan but 3DS ultimately has the highest sale potential.

Always interesting to get the asian sales, nice find. So we have now more than 800K for Dragon Quest Builders in Asia.

In fact, we are probably around 2 million units across two titles only, because it's been a while DQ Heroes reached 1 million in Asia I reckon.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

How about the Wii U? Did DQX reach good number for the Wii U?
