Apparently the new Harvest Moon game is quite a bit better than the previous 3DS titles(which makes it better than the DS entries as well) so I'm curious to see how this one does considering the success the series has seen over the course of this generation.

The blog shared some Media Create Sales:

First Week / LTD
[3DS] Harvest Moon: The Land of Origin <SLG> (Marvelous AQL) {2012.02.23} (¥5.040) - 81.131 / 300.000
[3DS] Harvest Moon: Linking The New World <SLG> (Marvelous AQL) {2014.02.27} (¥5.040) - 130.782 / 300.000

Despite lower first week sales, the first entry managed to sell the same amount ~300k.
We'll see if this new entry will sell the same LTD.

Anyway, Quite a disappointment:

[3DS] Return to PoPoLoCrois: A Story of Seasons Fairytale <RPG> (Marvelous) {2015.06.18} (¥6.458) - 46.491 / 80.000

Caligula probably sold more than #FE:

[WIU] Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE # <RPG> (Nintendo) {2015.12.26} (¥7.236) - 26.340 / 48.000

Meh, when all is well and done this game will even sell a bit better than expect lol.

There is only one explanation: Nintendo fans in Japan don't like JRPGs.

More like JRPG fans don't like the Wii U.

RPGs sell pretty well on Nintendo 3DS, because there's a large and varied offer. The same definitely cannot be said of the Wii U (though that's true for many other genres).

Not all 3DS owners are Nintendo fans though. I think all gamer in Japan own 3DS while the hardcore Nintendo fans own WiiU.

It's probably a combination of a lot of factors. Low userbase, the userbase's attraction to the genre is suspect, there have been few (if any?) games to test that genre's feasibility on that platform, mismanaged expectations, etc. I imagine in five years it will be considered a cult classic, but that doesn't really help its poor sales.

Rakuten Weekly Comment

- Story of Seasons is the best selling game of the week, but it was sold only by one store, Rakuten Books, something that shows a decline regarding other entries. Minecraft sold better than expected, and got some interest. Caligula and Refrain both were out of stock on various retailers in the marketplace.
- On hardware, PlayStation 4 is the best selling console of the week. Rakuten shows some re-stock for Wii U in both models. Nintendo 3DS new models keep selling, so the handheld could possibly be in first place.
- The most pre-ordered game is Yo-Kai Watch 3, Sushi version being the most popular of both. Also the Double Set is kinda popular, sold only by Rakuten Books. Final Fantasy XV and the Limited Edition of The Last Guardian were one of the games with most reservations.
- For next week, Super Robot Wars especially the PS3 version could take the first place. Zero Time Dilemma on its PS Vita version is also something to be aware.

http://ranking.rakuten.co.jp/weekly/101205/

* Note: Rakuten, Inc. is Japan’s largest online marketplace with more than 25% of marketshare, doubling its nearest competitor, Amazon.
* Note 2: More than 90% of Japan's Internet population is registered on the site, approximately 108 million users.

Well, Caligula did well. Refrain less so, though with it being sold out I have to wonder whether NIS gauged demand based on how things like Criminal Girls 2 did (which sold in similar numbers).

At the end Tsutaya was the most accurate chain of stores. As most of the times.

Compared to other DRPGs released on Vita recently, Refrain did pretty good IMO.

Genkai Tokki: Moero Chronicle {2014.05.15} - 32.957
Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy {2014.07.24} - 15.242
Stranger of Sword City {2015.01.22} - 11.559
New Tokyo Legacy: Operation Babel {2015.04.30} - 8.104
To Heart 2: Dungeon Travelers {2015.04.30} - 10.956
Ray Gigant {2015.07.30} - 8.673
Genkai Tokki: Moero Crystal {2015.09.25} - 18.721
Criminal Girls 2 {2015.11.26} - 15.196
MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death {2015.12.17} - Ranked #49 with no numbers

Coven and Labyrinth of Refrain - 17.000

Yeah, I suppose the DRPG market (certainly for first-person gridders) has been showing decline on Vita recently (most notable in Experience Inc's games - Demon Gaze > Operation Abyss > Stranger > Ray Gigant > Operation Babel).

Still, with Harada doing the art I'd have thought that would help with its commercial viability.

Wonder how Demon Gaze 2 will do later this year.

Seem fine, now for the legs...

Not expecting big legs due to: limited userbase (+ Nintendo not shipping enough consoles for actual growth), and the game already available on the Nintendo eShop since December.

It's Minecraft. Legs will be good, no matter what.

Better / Worse than others Minecraft version is another story.
