Media Create Sales: Week 32, 2016 (Aug 08 - Aug 14)

Yeah, I first travelled to Japan in 2003 as well. Nothing about the XB seemed appealing over here at that time. When I came back in 2006 things didn't seem too bad, especially with all of the RPGs releasing. I picked up the Blue Dragon 360 pack as my first one.

The bad thing about the the Xbox not being so popular is that they don't give you really great prices if you try to sell your games at a game shop. During the 360/PS3 era the PS3 version of the same game would always be worth more even if they released at the same price or sometimes higher on the 360. That's why I never really sold any of my 360 games. It's the same for the X1/ps4, probably even more lopsided now.

I'm still hoping they release the Xbox One S here as it would be nice to have a 4K HDR capable BD player in addition to the nice looking X1S system as I just got a 4K HDR tv. Since it's only sold 60kish in the almost 2 years it's been out here, I'm finding it hard to believe that it will come out anytime soon.

Yes, you're right, 360 games always cheaper than the PS3 counterpart.
A quick example is KoFXIII, which is priced over 3,000yen for PS3 and around 2,000 for 360 (wonder if the price will raise after KoFXIV release...)

Last week I bought a Xbox and now I was looking for some games (besides the ones I already bought many years ago such as Orta, Outrun 2, JSRF) and I really don't find anything :D

XBO S should be released in Japan iirc

no, I checked the site right now and no words about that, but there is a mention to Scorpio

How inusual is that lol
LOL yeah usually we get delays instead.

Yep which is why the usual "oh my god they are releasing so many Tales nowadays" is a bit funny.
Also that's 8 years, not 6.
That's because back then Tales of titles were rarely brought over to the West. IIRC among the ones on DS/PSP, only Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology got localized.

Didn't strike me when I first read your post, and then I realised they released 10 games in 6 years... wow.

Really makes the lack of games on 3DS/PSV titles even more striking.

Still wondering if they're going to try releasing anything during the first year of Nintendo's next handheld. I could see another port but... which one? Grace? Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't do anything at all, to be honest.

Between the increased requirements of the mainline games and making mobile games that look like the below, I imagine that they don't have resources for separate handheld games anymore.

As you noted, I suspect they would just port other games (or make them multiplatform) if they decided to do anything.

Currently Tales of Link (worldwide) and Tales of Asteria (bigger than Link in Japan) are probably making the same amount of money (or more) that they earned with their spin-off on dedicated devices a few years ago.

Tales of the Rays seems ambitious and was the last nail in the coffin of new spin-off on handhelds after Reve Unitia 3DS hitting the bomba bins (for right reasons, the game was terrible).

I'd probably just ask why not release that on a handheld(s) as well rather than make separate projects.

Do you have total digital sales? I'm on the phone, now
Using famitsu, retail sales of the game on PS3, PS4 and PSV are at 363.375, though PS3 and PS4 data is outdated, let's say 370k, so should be around 130k on digital.

Pretty far away from the 50.074 digital estimates.

Another new title by Capcom for 3DS.

Capcom announces IC Card-based 3DS game
http://gematsu.com/2016/08/capcom-announces-ic-card-based-3ds-game

Thanks for the RTK13 link! I'm definitely looking forward to more new announcements in the upcoming weeks.

Interesting move by Capcom here. Considering how huge IC card is in JP, if Capcom can price this product properly, i can see the title doing quite okay. But it is also Capcom, so, it is not going to surprising to see them fcuk this up.T_T

Wow that looks super good, which Tales is that?

To be fair I'd say the biggest "should have been x instead" this generation was the Symphonia HD collection. I can't help but feel that it would have performed much better as Symphonia 3D(and they wouldn't have to include the subpar sequel) based on how Abyss performed and the fact that a good chunk of the western Nintendo audience would be nostalgic for Symphonia.

There's been a general trend away from full priced handheld ports this gen though in favour of budget HD remasters which seems odd to me. HD remasters must be made on shoestring budgets even by port standards.

If Namco chose to going forward they could include NX in future development plans for mothership entries but they've specifically mentioned that the next game will be PS4 exclusive so that seems doubtful for now.

Oh I agree.
I'd say that this is a direction where the sharing of the development assets/engines would be really heplful for many developers.
As Hori said about DQ, for example, the age of proper "spontaneous" exclusive games is probably finished, and being able to put a game with minor efforts on more than one platform is crucial.
And this is where the PS ecosystem come to help many PS3/Vita/4 multi releases, over for example 3DS / Wii U ones.
For a third party developer, probably it doesn't mean anything neither to "cross" platform, putting the game on as many "ecosystem" as possible, hence DQXI on PS4, but also on 3DS and NX, for example.
I would say, for example, that if it would be possible to create a Tales game with minor effort that could work on PS4 (to hit the "core" demographic, male, 15/29 yo), mobile (wide not-focused demographic) and NX (young 6/13 yo/30+yo demographic) would be pretty neat

Tales of the Rays, with the scenario writer being Yajima (Symphonia, Abyss) and the character designer someone who's drawing looks like Fujishima's enough to confuse people (Matsubara).

While it seems to have a bigger budget at first glance, everything seems to be made of recycled assets and the gameplay will still be touch based and nowhere near like a traditionnal Tales of.
But it's slowly getting there in term of presentation.

Famitsu and Media Create had big discrepancies for this game. This is what we have for MC:

[PS3] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 <SPT> (Konami) {2016.04.28} (¥6.980) - 95.539
[PS4] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 <SPT> (Konami) {2016.04.28} (¥7.980) - 157.562
[PSV] Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2016 <SPT> (Konami) {2016.04.28} (¥6.980) - 168.552
Total: 421.653

PS4 and PS3 versions are outdated too. Looking the rankings positions we can estimate 15k more for each version, at best. Making 450k in total sell-through.
This number seems more accurate when adding digital sales estimates, and total more than 500k shipped.

Another win for superior tracker :p

Total: 417.001

The three versions also never left top 50 so far (but the PS3 SKU will probably next week)

Since Digital were >50k by the end of June with Famitsu, with additional digital sales since (a few thousands) and stocks left for retailers (15.000<x<40.000) it seems to fit too.

Yeah touch controls will still be a barrier for Tales.

In other news Sony has announced their TGS conference. Should be some good stuff there. Interestingly they've taken Sept 13th which has been Nintendo's pre-release conference for their last three systems so we're probably not getting an NX reveal next month.

...I don't understand why, all of a sudden, it seems that the month of September ends on the 15th for so many people.

Moreover, while the 3DS Conference in 2011 (the one with Miku, Bravely Default, MH3G and 4) was on September 13th (console already launched and, well, "re-launched" with the price cut), the Nintendo Conference in 2010, where Japanese launch date and price were announced (plus some other games), happened on September 29th, 2010. And it was well after TGS 2010 ended.

Ahh I must have got the two 3DS conferences mixed up. Still if they've missed TGS there's no real need or advantage in a September reveal. Though I guess the longer they wait the worse they look.

Either way Nirolak's plan for Road to TGS might be borked if he was planning on including NX reveal.

Between the increased requirements of the mainline games and making mobile games that look like the below, I imagine that they don't have resources for separate handheld games anymore.
The resource responsible for nearly all Tales spin offs until Tales of Heroes: Twin Brave, Alfa System, isn't used at all anymore though.

Tales of the Rays appears to be the first spin off/mobil title to approach the Randiant Mythology series in effort, its last game having released over 5 years ago.
