Senior Software Development Engineer
The Xbox Platform Developer Experience team is hiring! We own the core development tools for the Xbox console platform, and we serve as a driving advocate for the end-to-end developer customer experience across the program. We are looking for an exceptional SDE to help us take game development tools to the next level.

Game developers, from AAA studios to Indie shops, have unique and exacting needs. Just think about the factors involved: Game titles are only growing in cost and complexity with each new generation. These days the projects will involve scores of engineers and hundreds of artists. They have budgets and production values that rival Hollywood blockbusters. They have 10’s of gigabytes of content, code tuned to get the utmost from our platform, and holiday release dates that won’t move.

The Xbox ecosystem only thrives if these partners succeed. Our goal is to help them make better games, faster.

The ideal candidate is flexible, self-motivated and a great team player. Successful candidates will also have most or all of the following attributes:
• 6+ years of software development experience with demonstrated technical excellence
• Excellent design and coding skills in C/C++
• Proven commitment to delivering on schedule, with extremely high quality
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, open office environment
• Experience with and passion for development tools and overall developer experience
• Experience delivering versioned, backwards-compatible APIs and functional components
• BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent preferred but not required
Other skills that would be a huge bonus:
• Proficient in WPF/GUI/UX technologies
• Experience with debugger internals and low-level debugging hooks/APIs
• Experience with and passion for platform/OS code and performance analysis

most likely a device like vr

That seems highly unlikely. Even though Microsoft likes creating niche devices (Windows Phone, Surface, Kin, Xbone): VR even more seems like it's not going to be a huge market and not a market Microsoft could potentially be successful in (although that hasn't stopped them often, these past few years)

So Project Fortaleza is dead? I thought it would be cool, if I remember it correctly.

That seems highly unlikely. Even though Microsoft likes creating niche devices (Windows Phone, Surface, Xbone): VR doesn't seem like it's going to be a huge thing.

.... What? With Facebook and Oculus involved, you think VR will be small? smh

when big players like facebook are in the VR game, there is no way ms are going to stand on the side lines. They don't want another smartphone repeat. They may not announce anything till a vr device is on the consumer market, but i can bet you they will be at work on their own.

MS are working on new Xbox device, it could be the new Xbox or just an add-on to xbone.

"Xbox" is their general consumer entertainment brand. This job posting could well be targeted at hiring people capable of designing an Apple TV competitor, or similar.

I'll be the idiot.

What does this mean?
Likely: Some exaggerated language on Microsoft's part to make the jobs sound awesome.
Reasonable: Any sort of ongoing development of current or future Microsoft hardware and software. It's quite vague. "Development tools" might just mean DX12 for all we know. Way too vague. Hardware? Look no further than the Surface to see Microsoft repackaging a form factor in a panic when it doesn't meet internal expectations.
Paranoia: Already looking to start on their next console.

Console warring viewpoint for Microsoft fans: They're already looking to the future! WAY ahead of Sony!

Why are everybody forgetting Nintendo exist?

Because Nintendo time and time again state they aren't competing with everyone else?

And Miyamoto recently just badmouthed VR anyway. They said they would do it when the tech gets better or something to that degree.

I don't think anyone expects Nintendo to do a VR system unless it is beneficial to them. It would require something the Wii U wouldn't be able to do unless the games are even more stylized. Maybe if the follow up to the Wii U is focused on it but from what they have said they don't really like the idea of VR gaming on a couch.

Better yet, they are canning the Xbox One and going full Misterxmedia and going dual GPU, stacked, with 16gb of GDDR5 with full backwards compatibility all the way back to the original Xbox and the cloud then boosts it to DX13.

...these are bottom-of-the-chart positions. This is just personnel churn. A company that size is never not hiring. No doubt Sony would take applications for the same positions on an ongoing basis.

Pfft, you think small. Quad GPU and 64gb GDDR5 with a portable cloud generator instead of kinect.

Lmao, you should read the post from yesterday, it's hilarious.
