MIXED: With PSVR 2, Sony ignores the metaverse – and that’s a shame

https://mixed-news.com/en/with-psvr-2-sony-ignores-the-metaverse-and-thats-a-shame/
Something is sorely missing from the Playstation VR 2 launch lineup: the Metaverse building blocks that made Meta Quest 2 a success.

Looking at the list of VR games announced so far, something stands out: Most are single-player titles.

Of course, there are exceptions to this rule: I’m thinking of Demeo and Walkabout Mini Golf, which offer small and intimate platforms for virtual encounters, so-called tinyverses. Or the VR MMORPG Zenith: The Last City.

But the big social VR apps that are commonly associated with the VR Metaverse and are among the top ten apps for Meta Quest 2, like Gorilla Tag, Rec Room, and VRChat, are sadly missing from the Playstation VR 2 lineup.

This is surprising and raises the question of why Sony didn’t put more effort into social VR at launch.

Social VR is popular on Meta Quest

On Meta Quest, social experiences and multiplayer games now account for more than half of usage time, suggesting that virtual reality is readily and frequently used as a social technology. Apps that allow users to meet and express themselves virtually are correspondingly popular.

Speaking of expression: Avatars and a virtual home that you can customize and invite friends to visit are also missing from Playstation VR 2, and a new version of Playstation Home specifically for virtual reality isn’t on the horizon.

World building is another frequently mentioned aspect of the Metaverse. Roblox, Rec Room, and VRChat would not be what they are without the ability to create rooms and worlds. With Dreams, Sony has a powerful creation app in its portfolio, but is not yet using it for Playstation VR 2. A missed opportunity.

Playstation VR 2 skips the Metaverse for now

It is possible that Sony will announce some kind of social VR app, but right now it looks like the Metaverse is not part of Sony’s VR strategy.

We can only speculate as to why. The company might be wary of allowing VR applications that resemble public places in its official store. Sony could run into hate speech and content moderation issues that have plagued social networks for years.

The same issue arises with apps that allow users to create their own worlds: again, without the necessary oversight, content could be created that is problematic and even dangerous, especially for younger users.

Sony’s decision not to use social VR means that these problems will not arise in the first place – although the positive aspects of the Metaverse mentioned above (social VR, avatars, world-building kits) could at the same time hold great potential for virtual reality.

"Sony could run into hate speech"

Lol really?

Firstly the term in the title of this article needs to die, already much data, including one that has a thread here, showing most customers only like or care to be interested in VR when it's just called VR, not whatever-verse which not only can cause confusion, but it's dumb and turns people off, and because it's vague no one can really explain what it is, not even Zucker.

While I do think it's a bit odd social is lacking at launch for PSVR2 in even lesser form, I do think some will be added overtime.

Also Quest 2 while partially popular due to SOCIAL VR (notice no verse something here, keeping it simple) for sure, it was also ironically popular (especially earlier) because of its games. It had games along with a novel cheap wireless and well-featured for the time headset that general audiences wanted to play, even if many of them ended up being temporary fads. But some like Beat Saber with it's 5+ million sold is the best selling game in VR ever. So games was also part of the reason, and was the original launch pad for success as the social stuff took awhile to be ready, or launched broken to rush out the "verse" Zucker envisioned.

I take it Sony wants to try and outdo the games Quest 2 had at launch with bigger more fleshed out experienced, along with a whole pile of Quest/MobileVR ports that will be enhanced with the headsets newer technology, hoping to get those same audiences and hold them longer. Will it work? We will have to see. But it'll be better than rushing out half-finished social software that the Quest 2 launched with which had to be quickly fixed over time wasting a lot of money.

But the articles argument is partially reasonable imo, compared to others recently.

Oh Really? That metashit... just what Sony does not need... Social medias on consoles have been really great (PS Home, WiiU) but all flop hard. At the end, people don't want social medias on consoles, they want games.

Metaversenis the most retard thing ever who the fucks wants that?

If you just want to talk and socialize VR chat or similar apps are the answer...

The idea that there should be central entity working as a central hub for VR is outrageous.

I don't think I've ever met a single person that has used or wanted to use the Metaverse. Sounds like good news to me.

God I hate how metaverse has been iredeemingly poisoned by the shit Facebook pulled...

Look, people have heard of VR Chat right? That's what is being put across as a missed opportunityhere. Obviously a company can't really agree with a bunch of hyper sexualised furry's and anime avatars being the go to brand for their VR space so they need to create their own.

Essentially Home2 is what people are "hoping" for, and honestly I do think Sony should take anouther stab at it. People can be snarky about virtual social spaces, but honestly it's just anouther fun way to kill time.

Metaverse is an hoax, it’s over the jig is up, it’s fan fiction for billionaire nerds with no reading comprehension skills.

And sorry but if you are one of those who likes wasting your time in VR chat then lol. Do a video call next for fucks sakes.

This must be the 15th thread or so by Eddie about VR in the past week. Almost all of them with negative connotations

So far we have had supposedly legitimate publications grandstand about:

  • It not being wireless
  • It possessing eye tracking
  • It being too expensive
  • It not embracing the meta verse
It sounds like some are scraping the bottom of the barrel in search of a narrative.

Never fucking heard of mixed news until this thread
wtf is mixed news

it's a known tech site.

I don't find their claim to be controversial just misguided. They have a point about lack of VR social, but they made a mistake falling for the verse PR and forgot that Quest 2 was popular early because of games mostly, the social stuff was in the oven or broken at Quest 2's launch.

Sony has a million things they're working on, this idea that everything is going to come out yesterday is a bit off the wall. Sony hasn't even fully integrated discord chat yet.

  • People want Bloodborne PS5 and PC and they want Metal Gear Solid.
    • The reality is Bluepoint probably can't do both at the same time.
  • Dreams PC is an obvious one, but Media Molecule isn't a huge studio.
    • They don't have a ton of PC experience and they've got to create a better mechanism to monetize Dreams in order to actually grow the studio.
  • They have a ton of live services games in the works
  • Naughty Dog can't do an original IP, Last of Us 3, Uncharted 5, and Last of Us Online and release everything all at once
    • Uncharted is probably being offloaded to another team with guidance from ND
  • Santa Monica is working on a new IP, but they also need to fully support God of War for this TV series.
    • A God of War 1 remake makes sense
    • They still have to look at what's next for the future of God of War
and so on and so forth. Have to ask yourselves

What team is going to make Home 2.0? And when would this decision have been greenlit, what were they working on at the time? London studio is the obvious choice, but they just released Blood and Truth in 2019 and they seem busy making a fantasy online co-op game.

So you have to ask yourself, does a different studio make PS Home 2 or do you wait for them to free? Do you have another team start it off and then bring them in later or are you creating tech debt for yourself where you have different visions across different teams?

"Fuck the Metaverse"

"Bring back PS Home"

You clowns know it's the same shit, right?

The Metaverse isn't just the shit Facebook does. It's universal internet connectivity through VR...that's it. That means online social interactions between people using VR. You guys are getting your panties in a wad over a word you don't even understand the meaning of...lol.

A software app is not going to increase the price of the unit.
It's not flipping a switch. Compatibility costs man hours. SONY is obviously already selling this thing at a loss, do you think they want to invest more than necessary on tertiary features?

If psvr2 proves a success social features are likely coming in down the line.

But I thought Sony should have made a handheld console instead of VR, and now they complain about metaverse?
Can't the media make up their minds?
